And yet it is much lighter than old armor." He moves around a bit to get a feel for wearing it. "Yes. I do not feel so weighed down. Like I can move freely. Is this what these 'flak jackets' have always been like?"

If you said before was true, then some medium armor should increase your AC a little more. Yes, you got lucky at the docks by all those bad rolls by the goons, but that doesn't happen always. Also, I think they sell shields for further AC increase.
