People took the Chariot racing damned seriously, like modern Soccer fans starting riots over the shit. The teams were even mobilized into a militia when the city was attacked - they were the only ones to defend Constantinople from the rebellious general Phocus when he attacked the city in 602 AD. They failed and Phocas conquered it, but you get the point
