Stipulated, "elementary education" is not a field that draws the best and brightest. When I was in college, the vast majority of women were only on campus at all to search for, identify, and snag a future high-status alpha male and get that M.R.S. degree. Of the rest, the IQ-95 midwits, who grasped that they were responsible for paying back the loans, and who also grasped that they didn't have the intellectual horsepower to cut it in law, business, or STEM, went for social work or early childhood education because they're zero-effort jobs, essentially glorified babysitting, with fat civil service benefit packages, from which males are almost completely excluded due to Affirmative Action. There were lots of girls there who didn't have sufficient command of abstract reasoning, of concepts like "tomorrow," and "contract," and "debt," and who weren't pretty enough or good enough in bed to snag a fratboy Chad. They're the ones who majored in art or music or English Lit. They ended up, of course, a quarter mil in debt to the school and were the best educated baristas at the local Starbucks, living in shoebox-sized apartments with a dozen cats and a perpetual scowl.
