Normally, they're essential qualifiers that can have serious experience and roleplaying consequences for acting outside of. For example, Trump should have had negative experience for kiking the kikes that one time, but I find such rigidity to detract from gameplay.
Lawful means orderly/structured, Chaos being antithetical
Good means community-socially behavioral, evil being more individual/selfish. Neutral is always the gray area.

It also determines what cleric/mage spells are available to a player, as well as what they're weak/susceptible to, and certain items are alignment specific.

The only real consideration is things like circles of protection axiomatic spells (blasphemy, Football, etc.). Since infernius is chaotic, he's immune to the word of chaos, but is weak against the Law. Thez is weak against Football (if the user is powerful enough) but immune to Blasphemy, etc.
