>>131102Silver checks the library first.
>>131103There’s some kind of ball game, it seems like. Something about Manehattan. Something else about some horrible pony, and something about a cult. And
still something else about finally getting around to repainting the house.
“Are you afraid to talk to ponies?” Sands asks
>>131104There is a lantern inside sitting on the ground. The table is mostly intact, but so many books are burned, and many more are missing.
Sitting on the ground, with a tail that is tied together, is a small yellow earth pony, bright as a lemon, with a strawberry colored mane that is also tied back. She is looking at a few burnt pages rather intently.
>>131105Silver knows this place well. He speaks up.
"Excuse me? Would you happen to be Professor Faucet?"
>>131105Iron's ear flickers, turning to Sands with a lightly surprised motion. "H-huh?" he lets out "I figured talking to them could lead to an unfavorable outcome."
>>131106She jumps up, drops the page, and turns around to Silver
"Yes." She says, sharply, and blinking with reflective eyes
>>131107"Alright. I hear you. I'll do the talking for you"
>>131108"Thank you," Iron replies as he lets Sands do the talking for him as per his first request to establish their business relationship.
>>131108He smiles at her. He's slightly surprised at the shear size difference between them.
"I am Silver Sword. I was told you are expert of Celestialism."
>>131110She has a plain expression, and takes a moment before she answers
“Well... I was raised in the faith. I am an expert on religions generally. My doctoral thesis was on the split cult of the neighuatl and it’s survival, or not, into modern times.”
Is Pear making another claim for best pony? >>131111"Cult of Neighuatl...I have never heard of that before, but considering my prior experience with cults it can not be any worse. Anyways..."
He pulls out the sheathed sword.
"I believe this belonged to paladin who had turned centuries ago. I was wondering if you could confirm it for me, and if you knew what group he belonged to."
>>131113"No, it's just a term used to describe the solar worship. The descriptions of mass equine sacrifice are mostly exaggerated and not an accurate depiction of ordinary practices for most ponies."
She looks down at the sword, and tries to grab it with a hoof
"Where did this come from?"
>>131114"Ah. Sorry, just...recent experience with Maarists has tainted word 'cult' for me."
He lets her grab and take the sword to inspect it.
"It was found on armoured ghast that was dispatched here in quarry two days ago. Nature of its armour, combined with inscriptions on blade and its somehow perfectly preserved condition makes me believe it was paladin's enchanted sword."
>>131115She looks up to him, with an almost playful curiosity
"Maarists, you say?"
Then she looks a little more confused
"Ghast?"
She abandons that though, and looks down at the sword
"Well, it's a very large sword. There is too much moisture in here for this to be ordinary steel. It's too white too. Looks like silver, or maybe platinum. If it's silver, it's a very pure silver because any copper impurities would have caused it to tarnish. It's probably a steel sword with a thin outer layer of noble metal melted onto it. This was probably made before electro-plating, so that's a thicker outer layer than we'd have in a sword of this kind if we made one today. Now I can tell you that this thing is either a decorative piece, or it's a magically enchanted sword, because no way would any swordstallion have a sword with a very weak and malleable precious metal covering the sword unless it was magically enchanted to be harder. The steel gives it some structural strength, while the noble metal holds an enchantment well. It also looks prettier, which was probably intended, and it's basically impervious to rust or corrosion, which is kind of a happy accident. It could also be a ceremonial piece never meant for combat, or a modern forgery-"
She turns the sword around
>>131116>>131115Now, she inspects the sword itself
"Do you see that?"
She points to a star like symbol with branching rays
"This is the symbol of the Order of Saint Georgos. It's a military order established in the Eclipse Gulf area around 600 ALB. I don't recall the exact year, but around that time. They were established by migrants mostly of the Earth Pony Husak tribe and a few associated ones. It was made to protect Equestrian migrants in this general region. Against raiding natives, chimera, hydra, sea serpents, the occasional changeling, a few ventures although the way into Griffonia, but above all against dragons. The order does not exist today."
Am still playing just can't tonight. Maybe tomorrow.
Just pulled another all-nighter. Won't be able to make it today, sorry
>>131117 →>>131118"That would explain sword's heft. Even compared to my own greatsword, this is heavy weapon. It does not want to slash when weld, it wants to carve."
He inspects the inscription she pointed out.
"These Husaks, where did they originally hail from?"
>>131123It’s like a Star with four prongs, each prong itself having rays exuding from it. Below, on either side of the fuller, is a shield, and a flame.
“From ‘Earth,’ the Equestriain East inland, and from further north before that. Earth Pony Nation.”
>>131124"Hmm. Do you think some came down here with other settlers?"
>>131125“They
are the settlers. The second wave at least. After the Amstels.”
>>131126Silver nods, then holds a hoof out to recieve the sword back.
>>131127She gives the sword back, insofar as she had control of it anyways
>>131128He admires the beauty of the sword.
"Professor Grant and Feather Duster want this to be displayed as piece of local culture...but I will admit, I am reluctant to let sword like this gather dust in museum."
>>131129“What do you mean?” She asks
>>131130"When I was little I apprenticed underneath my blacksmith father, and he taught me that every blade is forged with purpose to fulfill its roll. And this is very special blade indeed, forged to be used in battle to protect others, not to be displayed and sit idle."
>>131131“Well, this sword was probably made to fight against dragons, and was probably a hundred years old with more than one owner when it came here.”
>>131132"Regardless, it was not meant for display. It just...it hurts, being blacksmith and swordpony, seeing sword like this be put up on display like that."
>>131133“Under the law, ‘lost’ and ‘abandoned property belong to whoever finds it, but if it’s ‘mislaid’ it belongs to whoever owns the property it is found on. All of this is assuming that the original owner can’t be found, which isn’t necessarily a fair assumption. Ordo Sanctus Georgius no longer exists, but some organization might claim to be the successor, like the Equestrian church. Then their’s the question of whether this is ‘Antiquities’ site and this protected under that Act. I think Peer Review and Dr. Grant want to take it and put it on display in Stableside, though Baltimare is more likely. Mostly they want the credit for it, to be ‘recognized’ for it. We weren’t even supposed to be here to begin with, this is a detour from a planned dig on Snake River. We were hired to do an archeological examination. I think the property owner just wants to be done with all of this and build here. This sword was not easy for its creator to make, especially back in those days. It was probably given to more than one Paladin of the order to save on money. It speaks to an insecure time in the regions history, where ponies and Dragons did not live in peace. But it also belongs to an era when this region defined itself and began to develop an identity, by withstanding a horde.”
She ends, and looks up directly at Silver
>>131134Silver seems to accept her response with a "hmm". He doesn't focus for too long on it.
"Snake River sounds...pleasant. I am new to Southeast Equestria. I assume it is somewhere in area?"
>>131135“Not really. It is much further south, in the Forbidden Jungles”
>>131136"Never been there, either. What is it you and your team are going to do there?"
[1d20+7 = 23]>>131109Sands looks around, and then starts approaching ponies, starting with the single males. Her story is that she is staying with an aunt and uncle in the area, and that she is fascinated by the boats. She generally acts bubbly and oblivious, but very curious about who she can talk to to get on one of the boats, as well as curious about griffins once griffins are mentioned. She is more flirtatious than most mares would dare be while their boyfriend is watching.
>>131137"We are going there to investigate reports about caverns and sights in the area. Supposedly Hayfeather fled Tenochtitlan and brought a treasure with him, or that's the rumor anyways. More or less we are going there to look for artifacts from around the time of Equestria's first contact with Tenochtitlan."
>>131138Iron stands there, nodding softly as Sands does her work since that side of their relationship was unveiled already. An uneasy feeling of being replaced creeps slightly into his mind, but for now he feels confident enough to worry about it later.
>>131138>>131139After some time, she comes back to Iron with her serious expression
"Evidently there's this business, 'Salty's Sardines,' cute, I know - this business was in hard times when some cannery was shutdown. The owner sold it to some griffins from out of town who didn't do anything with it except have a couple griffin's visit its offices sometimes. But in the last few weeks, more have moved it. There's this one griffin known to drive around in a Fillydelphia Royal and has been seen repeatedly at one of the restaurants here. There's a lot more activity on the docks too, with some of the boats sometimes leaving. They've shown interest in buying more things, and can get rather pushy when told 'no.' It makes many of the locals uncomfortable. There's some story about some's windows being broken after not wanting to do some kind of paint job. There's a few other details as well, but it seems like they are there."
>>131140"So our best shot is going for the Salty's Sardines place, then," Iron concludes with a nod "do we go straight there or you do think we should remind the more famous griffin among the locals?"
>>131138"Tenochtitlan? I have only heard stories and tales about that place from my father, but if they are at all true it is treasure trove of artifacts and gold, for those who can brave jungle's dangers."
>>131141"That 'more famous griffin' is probably more famous among the Griffins too. It depends on how you want to approach this."
>>131142"Well, that is the hope as well. I've also heard stories from my Grandmother. This will be my first time actually going into the jungle. Not my first time in the region though"
>>131143"We should probably focus on the more famous if it's for their strength to properly remind them," Iron explains "so we would be better off going into their turf and remind a lot more griffins rather than focus on one whose power is not centered on reminders."
>>131144"I.... what is reminding?"
>>131145Iron softly jabs at the air two times, making sure not to accidentally boop some random pony that was walking in front of him.
>>131143"I have never been, either. I hope your team has funding for bodyguards, there is no telling if you will run into hostile wildlife, bandits looking for treasure, or whatever other dangers exists under canopy."
>>131146"Uh... Okay. We'll do that, then"
>>131147"We hired a guide who will be armed. Peer Review thinks we need to keep a relatively low profile to avoid attracting danger."
>>131148"...you did get what I mean when I did that, right?" Iron asks curiously as he starts walking out of the restaurant.
>>131149"Sure. You want to physically beat them, and hope that's enough to scare them out of the area"
>>131150"It is simply to demonstrate physical prowess and superiority, of course," Iron replies "and only if they are as prideful as you have said."
>>131151"And the point of physical prowess and superiority is... to make them leave?"
>>131148"I hope he knows what he is doing. You all have been relatively nice, I would hate to hear of your disappearance. I wish you all luck in your endeavor, that you are quite successful and bring back many lost treasures."
He trots over to examine the burnt books.
"So, how have things been in Stableside? All calm, I hope?"
>>131152"Like the mare said, it is a reminder of who is more powerful," Iron explains "and to not mess with our territory. Making them leave would be nice, but I doubt a stallion like myself could convince them in any other way than through the 'reminders' and be wholly effective, considering their "
>>131154*their killing tendencies."
