Welcome back to the newest thread of Occupied Equestria

In Northern Equestria on the Changeling side, Spark has given refuge to a mare claiming to be stalked by a Changeling drone.

In the southeast, in Baltimare, Amber tries to slip past police in her infiltration of the Police Headquarters. Iron prepares for his next fight against griffin gangsters. Silver enjoys downtime, and Midnight checks out a local church.

And the pony is... Not the speaker. It's a member of the "Free Speech Society," a graduate student, who introduces the speaker. Evidently the speaker was schooled at Princess University, studied among some tribe in Zebrica, did a post graduate study in Aquelia, was a professor in Griffonia during the brief Republican period, and was a tenured professor at Hayward for over a decade. He was evidently dismissed by a new ordnance in the Manehattan district only a couple months ago under the then-secretary of education there.

The speaker spends a while to talk about the importance of freedom of speech and of the autonomy of universities, and especially, speaks of the importance of acting to maintain the autonomy of the university system in Baltimare. He speaks of a need to organize to prevent similar dismissals in Baltimare. He states further that these dismissals are only the "thin edge of the wedge" of reactionary movements, as the experience in Maanehattan has shown. He gets applause at a few of these suggestions. He ends his introduction, and leaves the podium.

She whispers back
"Yeah, it is."

And then an older stallion, orange brown in coat, with glasses, and with a curly mane and facial hair that has gone grey and white with age, comes to the podium, and starts to speak. The first statement is a thank you to the Free Speech Society for inviting him there, and a snide remark about being removed from Manehattan. He says he wonders why ponies think what he says is so dangerous, but remarks, "I tell only the facts, and evidently, the facts are dangerous to those who hold power."

He starts off the lecture proper not with a history of sexuality per se, but rather with a recent history of what others have said. Angels, famously, a few decades ago proposed the finding that the earliest pony tribes lived as single herd units where all sexual partners, children, and property were held in common, with foals being exchanged between herds to avoid incest. Only later in the development of civilization did private property - and with it, monogamous marriage - come into being. He then speaks of the findings of Professor Carrot Mead in her findings in living among the tribes of what is now the Feathesian Indies, on Salmon Island. She claims that, in the areas untouched by the Griffenhiem religion, that young zebra mares would promiscuously engage in intercourse with nearly the entire village in their younger years, and only later be married off. This, she claimed, had no real negative effects, and the mares are reported to have happy relationships there after. Evidently, chiefs are reported to have preferred mares who have had as many partners as possible. The professor gives isolated and anecdotal reports of similar patterns occurring in LLamabet, but also in old Equestrian cultures, claiming adultery has been more common than has been realized.

The speaker then sums up the previous section by stating that Hippological research suggests that the "Natural" state of most creatures is Polyamory and communal raising of children. Or at least, that restrictions to female sexuality are not natural. He claims rather that sexual morality - monogamous marriage and prohibitions on adultery - are rather something that arises later in the stages of civilizational development, generally alongside private property (also held to not be "natural" in the strictes meaning) and inequality. He notes that basically every culture on the planet is at a stage of development past the pure "natural" and earliest stages, with even those few exceptions mentioned earlier being hard to find in an unaltered state.

The professor then moves on to talk about how Monogamy came to be. He brings up the ideas of Frau, who states that civilization is the product of reason, which then places limits on the passions to try to funnel them into more creative ventures, with no passion stronger than sexuality. The professor talks about an association of sexuality with the primitive state, and the fear that older generations had of it, but also their fascination. He brings up examples from literature, and also has a projector showing images of art that supposedly are representative of the fear of sexuality. He links this to a project to assert the mind and the spirit over matter. He also associates it with hierarchy in government, inequality in society, and a reduction of female rights.

He goes on to talk about some of the negative consequences of the repressive, old sexuality, claiming they cause nervous disorders. He gives the example of a mare who evidently caused harm to herself in fear, or of extreme efforts ponies in the past have gone to to avoid masturbation.

He takes a detour to talk about sexual deviance, which he claims are caused by environmental disturbances in youth. He talks about homosexuality, and claims that in old literature it was associated with a love of masculine virtues, and love of comrades in battle. Supposedly it was associated with soldiers on campaign. He also claims that evidence shows that foals are much more sexual than appreciated, and that the earliest sexual growth occurs before puberty. Then he gets back into hippology, stating that pederasty, the practice of pairing children (past the age of puberty, but still children) with much older ponies of the same sex has been recorded in many societies - most clearly in Nimbusia - with no ill effect on development.

He claims that rape and pedophilia is in no small part the result of sexual repression created by the old morality. He takes a moment to allude to a particularly infamous incident of pedophilia uncovered just in the last week right here in Baltimare, and claims that this too, may be the unfortunate consequence of sexual repression.

He ends talking about what society should do. He praises Singer's work in showing the utility of contraceptives like condoms, and claims it has reduced the number of unwanted pregnancies, and of children born into poverty. He applauds Baltimare for eliminating the law against sodomy. He claims that sexuality outside of marriage, and especially mares having multiple partners, should be more tolerated by society. He claims that divorce laws need reform in every jurisdiction. Finally, he talks about the elimination of any laws against miscegenation, citing examples in zebrica showing this too, to be completely safe and natural.

Nadir occasionally looks over to Dark Star, and of course Star Cut and his girlfriend can see Dark Star, so there is little room for him to react negatively.

The speech included other items, like a reference to rumors that the Princesses had numerous male partners even at the same time, mostly from among their palace guards, and an insinuation that the prohibition against adultery is far from universal in civilized cultures, citing alleged examples to the contrary in Llamabet and Nimbusia where a mare having sex with partners other than a her husband was not only tolerated but desired by the male partner. He also mentions examples of interspecies relationships, most recently citing the behavior of New Mareland garrison troops in occupied griffin countries. Incidently, this is the one and only reference to the Blackhooves in the speech.

He ends the speech coming full circle, talking not about sexuality and its history or future, but rather about his own future as a professor. He expresses concern that he will be chased out of any university in East Equestria, and may have to leave Equestria altogether. He implores the audience to stand up and block any attempt to eliminate university autonomy. The crowd gives a standing ovation.

Hello
It's not the true end of the speech, but rather, it opens to questions and answers.

A pony in the crowd asks about Changelings. Totem, while not having much to say about Changeling behavior, does claim that they have thrived in Equestrian society in large part because repression gives Changelings a niche to fill; they allow a sort of outlet of sexual desire which they can then exploit.

A diamond dog asks about, well, diamond dogs. The professor admits ignorance of the history of diamond dogs, but claims that what he does know largely backs up his claims about ponies. In particular, there are reports that Diamond Dogs would raise their young communally, which he believes implied they had group marriage. He also mentions reports of sexual encounters between diamond dogs and ponies in the earliest days of exploration.

"Yes" He answers Dark Star

"Huh?" When Dark Star asks his question, there's almost a moment of confusion. But after a few seconds, a smile comes across his face.

"Oh, yes. Princess Celestia - these rumors circulate mostly around Princess Celestia - is widely known to have courted a duke before ascending the throne of the Equestrian confederation. That particular relationship is unlikely to have gone anywhere, but it is still something to think about-"
By and large, the evidence consists in Celestia being particular about some of her staff, specially reassigning a royal farrier in one instance, a master of the barracks in another, and especially throne room guards. Second, in several instances of especially foreign dignitaries and nobility being taken on what seem to be personal frolics like dates, or disappearing into her bedchambers for an hour or so. And thirdly, multiple ponies over the centuries have publicly claimed to have been lovers of Princess Celestia. The Professor has to note that all of the evidence is circumstantial and often has other explanations. One of the stallions who claims to have been Celestia's confident and lover was found to have never been even within a hundred miles of her, and in one especially bizarre incident, an attendant burst into a room occupied by Celestia and one of her throne room guards to find that Celestia was reading a bedtime story to the guard. Still, Celestia was known to send love letters in her first few years of being a princess to certain princes of the pony tribes. There are a few years where Celestia was reclusive enough that just may have been hiding a pregancy, and who knows what she's done in possible trips through mirror realms...

The evidence for Luna is actually more straightforward, as unlike Celestia, she has been spotted unequivocally love sick for individuals both before banishment and after, though the stallions in question deny having actually copulated with her.

Twilight, believed to have had a crush on a crystal guard, is admittedly the most likely to still be a virgin.

Cadence is actually married and has a child, and has a high likelihood of not being a virgin at the time of marriage. She is rumored to have had affairs, though these rumors don't seem to have much substance to them.

The presenter says that he wants to take time for members of the Hippology department at Jim Haykins to be able to ask questions.

The first question comes from an older mare who asks where the greatest progress is to be made in society. He replies that great progress has been made in legalizing contraceptives in almost every Equestrian jurisdiction. What remains to be done, he claims, is a general attitude shift in the population. In terms of legal changes, he claims that the illegality of abortion in some Equestrian jurisdictions, as well as restrictions on divorce, is where the greatest progress can be made.

A yellow mare in her late 20s, who the presenter states is an alum of the Hippology graduate program of the university, and is a professor in another city.

She tries to argue with the claim that there would be fewer instances of rape, pedophilia, or Changeling succubusism in a more liberalized moral system; she claims rather that moral license would embolden and provide cover to rapists, pedophiles, and Changelings (And yes, she lumps Changelings in the same category as pedophiles), and would create conditions for them to thrive. Totem retorts that such undesirable behaviors result when desires that need expression are not allowed to be satisfied in a controlled manner. The female professor does not agree, but moves on to a different question.

She contests the history presented in the first portion of the lecture. She claims to be familiar with the rites and rituals of the ponies indigenous (pre-Hearthswarming) to the southern portions of the continent. She claims that their indigenous rituals allow for polygyny among nobles including concubines and additional wives, as well as more lax divorce, but otherwise are fairly similar to modern Equestrian standards. He responds that the tribes in question are at an "advanced civilizational stage" and responds that something more like what is described elsewhere occurs in the ancillary Neighua tribes. She retorts that to the best of her knowledge they do not. He brings up a specific example from another cultural group further away, where a culture is said to practice female promiscuity prior to settling down in marriage just the same as in the Salmon islands example. She has to admit the culture in question is out of her field of specialized knowledge, but she does not trust a few anecdotal remarks from outside observers who had reason to lie about what they saw. Like the previous argument, this ends with both sides making claims that can't really be finally verified.

She finally claims a general logical problem with the pattern of sexuality mentioned before, that is, early age female promiscuity, by claiming that in a society where almost the entire population is living at the edge of subsistence, an out of wedlock birth would be certainly fatal to any child. He claims that onanism, timing cycles, and infanticide would resolve the issue, but that in any case they should agree to disagree as they are low on time. The female professor seems to back down for a moment, but then stands back up before being silenced by the presenter.

A graduate student asks a question about some esoteric practice in Griffonia, which Totem has to admit he doesn't know much about. The graduate student takes this opportunity to explain it to the audience. Something about a cup and symbolism, or something.

At this point, the presenter comes back, and says that they are out of time. There is applause from the audience.

It's a story from Unicorn society around the time of Gusty the Great, though the same motifs reappear in modern Equestrian history. The cup - actually a chalice - is said to be symbolic of female sexuality, and by extension, femininity in general.
