What made us special was that we didn't sell, but kept our land. It didn't get bought out by the larger land owners. We had a nice little profit, selling the grapes to others who would make wine. And then the market fell. That would have been survivable, but the drought... I had six siblings in total. Seven children who needed food, and money for schooling. I dropped out of school... and we couldn't live off grapes. My father... he snapped, I think. Some time that year. From the stress. I stayed on a few more years, but I left. The grapes recovered, but my father didn't."
