Doki Doki Literature Club was a good idea but the aesthetics of horror ruined the horror.
It's rare for horror to fully commit to not looking like horror shit. No overplayed trite cliches like jumpscares and blood and edgy manic grins and static and glitches. I'm not a fucking toddler, I don't get scared when my videogame fucks up and turns someone's polygons into a fucking polycule.
Any horror movie can put some maniac in a cheap mask and rubber fursuit and make him run around screaming as he stabs people with knives and "blood go everywhere and fire go everywhere" and blah blah blah. But unless you're going for a cheesy b-movie vibe, don't do FNAF shit. Glitchy graphics are worse than a cheap-looking rubber suit. Worse than a visible boom mic. They take you out of the experience and remind you how artificial everything is. Visual glitches only work when shit's diegetic. But even then, they remind me of cringe shit.
It's easy to make something "Look scary", just look at all the dogshit out there like Sonic.EXE and the anti-piracy screen memes. That's the vibe I got from DDLC when it stopped being bearable. I gave up on it about halfway through. Once whatshername roped herself, I was interested to see where this was going. Monika even said something like "You left her hanging" and the girl who hung herself implied Monika encouraged her to off herself. I was ready to see where this story was going, but then fucking... Sayuri? Was that her name? Sayuri was glitched in the menu and I laughed a little. It was the laugh you'd give to an unfunny joke that only got you to laugh because it was so much dumber than what you were expecting. Doo doo fart. The tension was gone. Now if she was missing on the menu, that could be kinda spooky. Perhaps the main menu theme could have multiple instruments and the one representing her could be missing, and this could keep up when the other girls died until it's just you and Monika and her piano, but randomly fucking with the audio's pitch occasionally so it sounds like shit is cringe. Breaking the fourth wall is the new "Jumpscare at the camera". It's overdone. You only think it's deep and revolutionary if you've never seen it done before. I know I've pissed off some footnote in my story by telling people my opinions, but I don't really have any reason to respect the feelings of anyone who isn't going to respect me as a person. Nigel was drawing a parallel between this mashup and the concept of Fallout Equestria. Essentially he was asking whether the Doom/Animal Crossing approach to this sort of mashup, which played up the humorous angle of a cute childish puppy character being superimposed into this hypermasculine shoot-em-up world, was better than the FoE approach, which focused on taking the cutesy world of FiM and transforming it into something dark and edgy.
The short answer to this question, basically, is yes; this is a much better way of handling this kind of thing. When you are starting from an obviously silly concept, it's much better to just embrace the silliness. Even if you're trying to make a quasi-serious story out of it, if you take yourself too seriously you're just going to end up making the whole thing even sillier, as we saw multiple times during our readthrough of FoE.
Now that I have the proper context to understand what the fuck he was getting at, this is actually a decent observation. The sad thing is, if Nigel could just learn to articulate himself and communicate like a normal goddamn human instead of just palm-mashing his keyboard every time he has a random thought, this actually could have generated some meaningful discussion in the writing thread. All that Nigel really had to do here was take 30 seconds to consider that, since this isn't a game-focused community and the thread he was posting in wasn't specifically about games, it probably wasn't safe to assume that everyone in the thread would automatically be familiar enough with Doom or Animal Crossing to be aware of this relatively obscure meme. Literally just a sentence or two of explanation or a link to that article you posted would have been more than enough for Nigel to provide Anons with enough context to understand what the fuck he was talking about.
