And so she is cuddled up with her coltfriend, reading a history text book. Despite not actually attending secondary school…

So the book claims that the Baltimare and Hayseed regions were filled with hostile creatures. These ranged from Hydra and Chimera in the swamps, to entire villages of Diamond Dogs, which are quasi-indigenous to the region, having migrated there before the migration of the Hearthswarming Covenant nations. Dragons are a menace as always. Now, these dangers had historically been handled by local levies, which were insufficient, and then by military orders of the Celestial church. This went on for a while, but funding and other issues forced the movement of garrisons of Royal Guard into the area. While the area of Hayseed had long been inhabited - indeed, Mage Meadowbrook is from there - it was intercontinental trade that caused the area of the Horseshoe bay to become of importance to Canterlot. More Royal Guard were stationed there as the years went by, and a series of disputes starting with an abducted filly became a war against the Diamond Dogs. The result of the war was to convince the local settlers that the Royal guard was insufficient, and that they needed additional protection, while it convinced the Central government that the region was expensive to handle, and additional funds needed to be raised. There were other things going on, like a war against the Yaks and a shortage of precious metal for coinage and this high interest rates on loans, which lead to financial difficulties for the central government. The militia were something like a return to the old levy system, with young stallions being impressed into training and service. The existence of the militia made many in Baltimare feel they didn’t need the central government, didn’t get their money’s worth out of the central government, and felt they could negotiate better deals with the central government. And those were among the many factors in the milieu leading up to the revolt.

Yay, lore!
She occasionally mutters some comments at highlights in the text.
"Oh my, I'm glad it's not so dangerous now."
"That poor filly, I hope she was rescued…."
"So THAT'S why!"
Finally, she turns her head, which has been on Mustard's shoulder, and faces him to posit a question he may not have faced before.

"If you were called to fight in the militia…would you?"

>I'm glad it's not so dangerous now
D’awww, she’s so naive it’s adorable.

>That poor filly, I hope she was rescued….
According to a footnote in the book, the Amstel Unicorn named Minty Mirth was finally rescued after two years, and actually not until after the war was over. She was found to have more or less assimilated into Diamond Dog society, speaking their language, though she retained full memories of her life before. The reasons for her abduction are unknown besides the natural savagery of Diamond Dogs, though for what it’s worth, her father, who reported the crime, claimed it was in retaliation for killing s Diamond dog a week before in a trespass abs dispute over land, and Minty Mirth herself claimed she thought it was all a game with some Diamond Dog pups, and didn’t realize anything was wrong until after she was in their camp. She was 6 at the time, so of course she would have been easy to fool.

Mustard Trim looks back at Amber with a serious expression:
“My mother told me that if I got drafted, I should apply for deferment under Sole Survivor. I don’t think so. I don’t think I could. Not after Careful Cut gave up his deferment fir essential worker to go. Not after Pa volunteered so Careful Cut… my-my brother - so he wouldn’t have to go alone. I am pretty sure that if hadn’t been for the Duke, that war would still be going on, and it would be my turn in six months. Mother says she’d never forgive me if I went. But I’d never forgive myself if I didn’t - if I were called and I didn’t. I know the reputation of those who stay behind. Those who take the higher wages, sleep in beds, and sleep with the wives and fillyfriends of those who fought. I don’t want to be one of those. I would rather go.”
He does not, and cannot make eye contact with Amber as he speaks. His lines sound almost rehearsed.

Reality will be like a cold dunk in the Bay's waters in February.

It's a relief to Amber that Minty was rescued, though she wonders how a pony could learn the Diamond Dog language. How exactly does an equine manage to bark, growl and whine like they do? She realizes she knows practically nothing about Diamond Dogs; she's glad that although they are savage they're not quite so savage as to do anything particularly bad to her. Not like changelings, who are unredeemable.

Mustard's response makes her turn her head away and she finds that she shivers as she hears it. She asked about a militia, not a drafting into a wider war, though the latter may be inevitable in this age. A militia at least stays in the area; you can still sleep in your bed, partake in festivals, and see your loved ones as you protect them. The draft is much more horrible, where you're sent to a strange place to fight unyielding hordes with tanks and planes and other terrible weapons of war. She hopes Mustard never has to face that. But if he does…

"I-if you're drafted…," she chokes out, "I'd…I'd join alongside you. I wouldn't stay behind either."

Diamond Dogs are crude, abduct ponies, and worst of all, only tip like 2 bits even if they bring an entire large party to a restaurant. This latter issue is one of the things Mustard complained about to Asper Spring.

Mustard Trim may have misunderstood her question, but she’s left with the answer she got. Mustard picks up his leg, places it around her, and rubs behind her ears with his hoof.

“That’s sweet of you Amber. I don’t know if they’d let you stay with me though.”

Among the other factors shaping Baltimare's history, is the distinction between the rich and the poor. Now, obviously this is a factor in all locations in all times in history, but it's unique within the city of Baltimare relative to the remainder of the Equestrian Southeast. Baltimare exists because of its location on the natural harbor of Horseshoe Bay, and its position on the mouth of the Delamare River helps. Baltimare is the single closest deep water Equestrian port to Zebrica (or at least it was), and is the closest to the ports in Wingbardy and the old Royal Dominions of New Mareland, New Freeside, and Starcross, as well as the Dominion of Puerto Caballo and Maregypt. It also served as an in-between between the shallow ports of the Southeast and the ports of the Equestrian East Coast. The result was that raw materials mined or grown in the south would be sent to Baltimare for refinement, and exported to elsewhere, while goods from elsewhere would be sent to Baltimare, and repacked into smaller boats to be shipped to the south. The result is that ponies who made fortunes in various industries and trades in the Southeast would concentrate themselves in Baltimare, while the city had a massive underclass of dock workers, sailors, and various workers, besides an even more important and prominent middle class of numerous varieties of craftsmares, professionals, and lower level merchants.

This became an issue especially in the lead up to the revolt of 770, as the legally granted trade monopolies granted an inordinate amount of power in the hooves of the few business owners of Baltimare. The disparity in economic power, tolerable in peace time, became intolerable under the circumstances of the age. The shipping industry lost a great many ships to the privateers of Pridea, who supported the Yaks in an undeclared war against Equestria. And many industries stood to lose from the new customs duties and tariffs. With their power, the losses were generally transferred onto the lower and middle classes, causing great ire, and the disparity in suffering made the disparity in power and wealth all the more blatant. The middle class had a decades long grievance against the monopolies, as they reduced upward mobility for ambitious ponies, and forced them to play politics to win the favor of their bosses for limited privileges, like captaining a ship.

Thus, with all of these factors that had been brooding for decades, a revolt was imminent. A mare broke off her engagement with a local ship captain to become become the second wife of Joseph Curwhinny - the owner of a shipping company with a monopoly on trade to multiple Griffonian and Zebrican nations, and a majority of the trade to the East Coast and the Dominions, easily the single most powerful individual in Baltimare. He lived a life entirely alien to most of his workers, and to the population of Baltimare. So when the jilted lover spread rumors that he was in fact some sort of evil sorcerer, many of the lower classes and some of the militia were willing to believe it. Thus began the most violent act of the rebellion.

The book has to note that there is an alternate interpretation of the set of events that the revolt wasn't actually a proper revolt in the sense of an entire class of ponies rebelling against any power in the city, but rather that it was a dispute between smugglers. There are rumors - never verified, but probably true - that Curwhinny had been evading paying customs duties on many goods by making secret shipments. The 'jilted lover' was likely one of the smugglers hired for that purpose, and other smugglers joined in in a dispute over payments, and soon enough the dispute morphed into a protest by affected sections of society against the impositions of the customs duties by the central government.

Mala nods. He's not really any bigger than the stallion, but to see Mala bear his teeth while his mouth and claws are covered in someone else's blood is a little intimidating. It worked on the griffins in Hoebuck, and it works here.

Silver moves around to the front of the vehicle to see Frizzle actively fighting on the ground with the diamond dog, grabbing on to both forelegs, and trying to keep him to the ground. The automatic pistol has slid several feet away, just far enough that the diamond dog no longer tries, while Frizzle continues to attempt to subdue him. Frizzle has a limp leg that is not able to apply much force and seems to be weaker than the diamond dog. Meanwhile, there are massive amounts of blood on the ground from the diamond dog that have formed a pool on the ground, and some of it has gotten on Frizzle's work uniform. Frizzle seems to be winning over all, but the fight hasn't really ended.

Frizzle:
"I'm not... really able to check right now."

She wonders if it's normal for mares to have a stallion go inside them twice a day. Then again, she's had Mustard do just that five times in twenty-four hours, and the only drawbacks are tiredness and a bit of soreness, so it ought to be okay. Without such fancy accoutrements like a radio, it makes for a decent alternative to entertainment during a work day. Why wasn't she told about the great fun it is sooner?

The nations that would later form the Hearthswarming Covenant originated in the area north of the current Crystal Empire, approximately in the area of the Polar Lands, the northern Changeling lands, as well as much of what is modern Nova Griffonia and parts of Yakyakistan. This was before the Changelings moved into their lands, and the path of the sun was different. The sun traversed the sky a little differently, moving further north than it does now. Ponies stretched from the Changeling lands, down to the bottom of Equestria and into northern Zebrica, across the top of the continent into modern griffin lands, all the way across the northern part of Griffonia and down through to the south of that continent. But then again, most of these pony nations are not Equestrian. The story of the Equestrians starts in Dream Valley, a semi-mythical location generally accepted to have existed along the Yakyakistan-Polar lands border. This location featured what are believed to be some of the first known instaces of Harmony and the Rainbow Power, and has its own set of heroes. It was here that the pact between the nations began where the races would split their duties , working towards a common cause. This first covanent is the precursor to the Equestrian Pact...

He continues, with many details about the specific kingdoms involved, and the nations that eventually lead to the first Hearthswarming.

1. Amber has a lot of control, and can tell her partner to fuck off at will, while at the same time, there is no reason to assume he would ever not want to.
2. Amber has found something her coworker wants, and wants badly. He is willing to be hit and have his mane pulled, to be insulted, to lose most of his money, to lie to his mother, to risk the ire of his mother, to be indebted to his sister, and to walk potentially hours through unsafe city streets to get.
3. It costs nothing at all. No money. Nothing but a little of her time in private. Well, it cost her her hymen, but that's sunk cost now

I mean, there are some really nasty emotional consequences, potential social repercussions, and she better hope her cycle doesn't start early... but who needs to worry about that?

Well, there is a description of the states that existed prior to the Hearthswarming. Unicorn states tended towards mixed oligarchy and Monarchy, typically something similar to, though more primitive than what we would later recognize as feudalism. Pegasi states tended to be timocracies, and have military rulership. Earth Pony states were sometimes despotates, though the latest ones tended to be democracies, sometimes representative democracies.

The professor actually more or less answers Dark Star's question for him. The nations of the Riverlands in modern times are perhaps examples of what ponykind looks like without the princesses
