>WASHINGTON (AP) — Mitch McConnell, the longest-serving Senate leader in history who maintained his power in the face of dramatic convulsions in the Republican Party for almost two decades, will step down from that position in November.

>McConnell, who turned 82 last week, announced his decision Wednesday in the well of the Senate, the chamber where he looked in awe from its back benches in 1985 when he arrived and where he grew increasingly comfortable in the front row seat afforded the party leaders.

>“One of life’s most underappreciated talents is to know when it’s time to move on to life’s next chapter,” he said. “So I stand before you today ... to say that this will be my last term as Republican leader of the Senate.”

>His decision punctuates a powerful ideological transition underway in the Republican Party, from Ronald Reagan’s brand of traditional conservatism and strong international alliances, to the fiery, often isolationist populism of former President Donald Trump.

He may have been a neocon, but he was especially potent at securing conservative federal judges and sabotaging Democrat policy ambitions: liberals are seething at the legacy of his career. He also got a lot of development investments in his home state, which his voters seemed to appreciate.
I don't really like him personally, but I acknowledge that he was an effective politician who cared more about pragmatism than being popular.
Slow and steady wins the race.

Good, I still don't care about this boomer.

He was only more successful than the other crooks who grew up in ivory towers like him.
>he was especially potent at securing conservative federal judges and sabotaging Democrat policy ambitions
Not naive enough to hold party allegiances. Screw this turtle.

he's like all the rest of them, pretends to dig in his heels to make his voters think he's fighting for them and then winds up voting for stuff and passing it anyway. they just give the illusion they are against stuff but they are all owned by the same people and they pass what they are told too eventually.
