The beginning seasons had females being important things in the feminine domain.
I was about to post a lot of bullshit but looking on it now it's simple.
These characters harness the dangerous/hostile/monstrous in both grotesque (big) and minuscule (small) aspects they represent for good (usually because nobody in this case nopony is perfect except for my waifus).
That's highly desirable by succeeding in those feminine domains. In every way it's desirable sexually, platonicly, in all forms of love and friendship. The success of others feels good it's also something we want in others given a choice between not having any of it or just a little bit of these traits. The little bit wins, because it's that important.
It didn't shy away from the ugly side, but it also didn't revel in it. The point was about friendship by extension love by further reaching extension metaphysical philosophy about being (striving toward being) an idealized female then by extension again to just be a better person.

Looking back after all this time, it seems rather ironic that an old SJW freakout was responsible for the creation of one of the last based fandoms and this site's existence. Not to say it was the sole reason, but the drama certainly boosted the show into public consciousness.
Also, I'd really forgotten just how far back this cancer existed. I didn't realize that words such as "hetero-normative" were in use back in 2010.

I think the true appeal of the show is closer to this. MLP has the same waifu-appeal that a lot of girly moeblob anime has, in that it presents an idealized femininity in a setting where the girls are not being overtly sexualized or behaving degenerately. There aren't that many male characters, and the ones that do exist aren't presented as contenders for the characters' affections, so the female characters retain a sense of purity. This kind of cute-but-untainted image of femininity is appealing to men, particularly in an age where smut is everywhere and most people are completely desensitized to it.
