In movie 2,she suffers the consequences of her retardation and works hard to redeem herself, even before the chance to be a hero falls into her lap. When she goes back to being her own smug smirking Gary Motherfucking Oak self, it feels triumphant and earned.
Then Sci-Twi and ponygirls on motorcross happens, then a shit superhero film plus shit kids camp film happens, then some phoned in DVD shorts happen.
I dunno. Even though she was practically written to embody bad Seventh Mane Six Member clichés, movie 2 made me like her and think she deserved better.

Twilight needs to go inside her head, face her Shadow, kick its ass/pass out while her friends kick its ass, and then get full control over her magic.
Sunset wants Sci-Twi to "Just embrace the magic inside her" and become like the "Real" Twilight.
Sci-Twi wants to be a good girl and do as her friends say, but the darkness inside her isn't something she wants to face or deal with properly.
And the writers probably aren't allowed to do anything deep or introspective.
So there will probably never be a scene where Sci-Twi asserts her invididuality, faces her darkness, and admits to herself and her friends that she is not Pony Twilight, or "The Sciencey Twilight", she is "THE Twilight Sparkle" of her world, dangit! There will never be a scene where as magic builds around her like in the Persona 5 Awakening scenes, she decides "I'm not a sparkly girl! I'm not a girly girl! I don't wear poofy dresses! I think science is cool! I love trains and tanks and cars, and that's okay!" and she gets some kind of "Princess Of Technology/Science" outfit.
