I've seen footage of what goes on there as well as the people who attend. But how would one describe the overall experience?
I've never gone to a convention before but would like to visit in the future.

this will be my first mare fair but not my first con, and I can honestly say out of the 10 or so conventions I've been to for various things I can't remember a favorite panel, but I have very fond memories of merch halls and room parties

I've been going to pony conventions since canterlot gardens only showing in 2012, and several conventions [linux, manufacturing] before that.
The early pony conventions felt pretty much exactly like the linux conventions. a fair amount of IRL shitposting and autistic people that are not quite sure what to do. Quite a bit of drinking in the later hours of the day and general fun times talking about the gritty little things you like the most about [linux, ponies].
Then somewhere around 2015 or so, troons started fagging things up, mostly from the furry community. Pony conventions became horrible and kept out/kicked people from trying to have fun from the desire to stay healthy by not taking experimental gene therapy shots.
Topped with derpibooru banning free speech, and "pony conventions" slowly going more furry, this pissed off most of the core mare lovers
Mare Fair was born.

It was like I was transported back to 2012 but without the "I'm here but I'm not quite sure what to do now" vibe. It was by far the highest energy pony convention I've ever been to. Maybe similar to having a very large extended family where more than 3/4 of everyone at the family reunion are people you want to be around.
The only down side is there is not enough time to hang out with everyone, regardless of how much you want to.
The icing on the cake is they managed to find a fantastic tiny horse rescue facility in Florida they dump loads of money on that directly helps horses. Nothing goes to administration or any other kind of BS, purely helping the horses.

There is an official visit to Fallen Oak horse rescue the Tuesday after Mare Fair. As I recall it is about a 2 hour drive from Mare Fair. Highly recommended.
There are a good portion of vendors at Mare Fair that are not at any other convention. Perhaps more than 1/2 even. Anon_The_Anon I know said he can't afford to go to any other conventions and was quite fun to hang around. That is just one of the many uber cool based artists.

I've never been much for panels at cons but I had a lot of fun at all of them that I went to. As I mentioned further up in the thread the perler bead workshop was probably my favorite, I think a crafts room in general spanning the whole con would be awesome (and a better use of space than the gaming room that was mostly empty)

Does anyone want to discuss/correlate plans for next year's Mare Fair, as well as potentially other conventions? I have a number of personal plans, and I'd also like for there to be some degree of visible /mlpol/ presence: a scheduled meetup (with elastic string disposable paper anon masks in green and orange) if not a panel of some sort.
Mare Fair is the best opportunity (imo) to draw in quality new/old users, an with a bit of strategy and planning we can have more of a "did you hear wat /mlpol did?" presence in the MLP fandom. If there's no interest, wah-hey!, but if there is I'll consider baking

One thing that furries can lose sight of is that expressly-furry conventions are open to really anyone. Mario is here, Link is there, there's a trio of amogus over there, a bunch of cosplay anime fags are gathering over at the bridge, etc. It has become second nature to assume that unless otherwise specified, conventions are a permissive space with expected overlap. In that furries also have a (ahem) healthy population of willful con-goers for whom travel/etc is not a concern, a new and upcoming convention is quite enticing. Without clearly emphasizing the central focus of ponies it becomes assumed that the con would become diluted with ponies.

As a qualifier to having the best time possible, it is possible that people who are not of the target demographic (whether more furry, normie, press, etc) are in attendence. Ostensibly they should go unmolested*, assuming they are informed and can appreciate that while otherwise not unwelcome that this is a Pony-centric culture/convention. That's the attitude outside of Marefair - to ban as many things as possible and to restrict as many things as possible. Mare Fair thrives precisely because it takes the opposite approach. It is as free as possible and allows as much as possible, because that is the best way to spark creatively, not banning everything.

And on that panel, I talked about mlpol.net and the history of mlpol. I told the story of the board mergers on April 1st, and how I came to mlpol. The room applauded. We had an Alternative Sites panel this year as well which I participated in, though it was smaller, I was late, and Zizzy was leading it, so the panel focused pretty much entirely on technical aspects of operating a website which I had nothing to contribute to

Just in the panels I was present for, there were: 3 panels including racial slurs (two with multiple instances of "nigger" and one with "chink"), one panel with an ISIS flag and fake AK 47s, one where a bomb threat was read aloud, one with a joke about a con mascot dating a 9/11 hijacker and losing her box cutter because of it, a panel wherein someone married an Aryanne plush, multiple Aryanne plushies just being paraded around, multiple panels wherein explicit material (horse pussy) was shown, several panels with explicit statements about foalcon, and one where someone shouted "kill Haber" and got no push back. What else do you want? How many fewer restrictions do you need?
The only restrictions they have at all are in the public areas to try to keep the hotel from banning them. Because they know that if they are banned from the Mariott, the Marriot will speak to every other venue, and get them banned from every other venue, and then they are fucked

I know someone who was banned from every single My Little Pony Convention in the United Kingdom because he implied that he had images of foalcon saved to his laptop. That's the attitude outside of Marefair - to ban as many things as possible and to restrict as many things as possible. Mare Fair thrives precisely because it takes the opposite approach. It is as free as possible and allows as much as possible, because that is the best way to spark creatively, not banning everything.

Did none of you attend last year? Last year I was invited by Corpulent Brony (one of the chief organizers, mind you) to be on a panel about Alternative Sites. And on that panel, I talked about mlpol.net and the history of mlpol. I told the story of the board mergers on April 1st, and how I came to mlpol. The room applauded. We had an Alternative Sites panel this year as well which I participated in, though it was smaller, I was late, and Zizzy was leading it, so the panel focused pretty much entirely on technical aspects of operating a website which I had nothing to contribute to
