The equipment, genes and restriction enzymes required to genetically modify bacteria are all available online (NEB.com, addgene.com, cheap thermic cyclers and incubators on ebay) and some people are starting to genetically engineer their own bacteria at home. Others are experimenting with early nootropics (smart drugs) (nootropicsdepot.com) or DIY brain stimulation. This technology is advancing at an accelerating rate, and people are now taking the science into their own hands. How is this going to affect society? What are your thoughts /mlpol/?

I've always wanted to take some brain-enhancing drugs in secret to see what it's like with an even higher IQ, but I'm afraid that I'll either get addicted or realize everything I care about and want to do and everything I am is stupid and then go back to videogames all day every day until I die. It's miserable and lonely to be what feels like the only smart person in a stupid country, wouldn't raising my brain's power level higher just make that worse?

I'm all for it. No one should interfere if you want to experiment with your own genes and your own body, or put glow-in-the-dark genes in your yoghurt. But then again I am a liberal.
No doubt someone will at some point modify/grow an organism that would be highly impractical as a terror weapon but makes for scary headlines and we'll see all kinds of ridiculous laws targeting home experimenters, but that won't stop people from doing this sort of thing, just ensure that it's done underground.
