Why the fuck did that take you so long?
(Sorry, didn't mean to hit reply)
>MLP OC fanfic I wanted to write 6 years ago and since have lost all motivation and love for
Why the fuck did that take you so long?
>Because I was homeless for most of those years. I'm not homeless any more, though. I'd also rather not say what being homeless is like or answer any questions about that. Call this proof that I'm fake if you want, but I really don't want this thread derailed with sad stories about me, especially not a thread that's supposed to be about how to stop my life continuing to be a sad story.
>>50863You should not ask strangers on the internet for career advice, but if you insist.
IF this is your de factor job, go where the money is and adapt to the market. Write the best you can for the biggest possible audience. Your personal preferences do not matter here. It helps if you like what you do, but this is not what work is about.
I would generally not advice trying to milk mlp anymore. the franchise is kind of dying. Sure you pretty much noticed that yourself. Jump on an Anime bandwaggon perhaps, that shit seems to have a second spring currently. Jojo and Pokemon seem like save bets to me.
>>Fallout Equestria fic about nazi unicorn oc bringing order and unicorn supremacy to the wastes and genociding ziggerssomeone sort of actually did that already, see second pic related.
>>50863Thank you. And yeah, this is my de facto job. Writing's also always been my dream.
If I had to choose between a Pokemon Adventurefic I'd already planned out a team for and a Jojo fic that'll probably last 22ish chapters and feature a lot of "OC VS OC" and "OC and canon characters VS OCs" battles, which do you think would be most likely to succeed?
The Pokemon fandom is big and has a few popular fanfics(Brave New World, all those 'Smart!God!AuraMaster!Ash' fics), but as far as I'm aware, the Jojo fandom doesn't really have any popular fanfics. Does that mean there's an opening I should go for, or does it mean the fandom probably doesn't like fics?
If youre making money off patreon youre not NEET youve technically got an employable skill
>>50879sounds like you did some market research already. Good! in that case i would go for Jojo. Theres less competition and you may end up doing pioneer work in their fandom. I would put in some cannon characters, readers read something they know to rely on.
>>50886Market research... Somehow, it feels... cynical to think of it that way. Bitter and cynical. There's no magic, none of the beautiful inspiration and desire I felt when I dreamed up my now-stale MLP fic.
But I wouldn't have made this character if I didn't love JJBA. I'll write that story, but what do I do then? How do I go from random fanfic writer to beloved fanfic writer with a patreon that brings in enough money for me to eat like something other than a stereotypical starved college/art student?
I forgot to mention this, but Fire Emblem is popular as fuck and I could write about that instead.
>>50889That is something you have to deal with when it comes to professionalism. Cartoons and Comics are a business like any other. Even big companies and peopel with decades of experience struggle and fail. If you want to succeed, you either need to put out work of excellent quality or know how to sell your stuff well. I cant tell you how to do that, im neither an artist nor a write. Its risky, but if this is your chosen career option youd best do well to dig in and shove your feelings aside. Keep the Inspiration though, you will need it.
>>50892perhaps, never stop keep an ear on the pulse of the scene. make a product people want to have that makes them support you. something that does not exist, bzt that you would like yourself.
How could a Fire Emblem fanfic work? "Xander gets to go back in time and redo things"? "The Awakening Trio that showed up in Fates go on adventures in a new Outrealm, wacky hijinks ensue"?
>>50863Be wary of fanfiction. Use them only as a hook to bring people to original creations. At least that's how many Japanese doujin creators do.
The issues with fanfiction are two:
1. Serves as a way to shape your audience. I don't think you'll attract the people you want by writing MLP fanfiction. And bad fans are a huge pain in the ass.
2. It's too tempting to use an already built universe. Be ambitious and build one of your own. Take The Lord of the Rings as an example.
So my advice is this: Write only one or two fanfics, just as a stepladder to build an original setting.
But if you need money quickly, you can write self-help booklets, people love to buy garbage like that: Use intrincate language and word plays so you can tell people what THEY want to read without telling anything.
If you are REALLY desperate for money, give up on writing, learn Javascript and offer yourself as a part-time code monkey.
That's everybody's favorite merchant's advice for you!
Every time you post, op, it's so autistic. There's always so much autism cramped into each post, that I can barely tell if you're being ironic.
>>50918Thanks for the advice, but if people cared about original things, hollywood would be very different. Harry Potter was just another Boarding School story but with magic, Twilight was just a Buffy the Vampire Slayer fanfic gone wrong, Fifty Shades was just a Twilight fanfic gone wrong, and Percy Jackson/"Heroes of Olympus" was just a Harry Potter fanfic but with greek shit and starring the writer's tard son.
>>50919Did I ask you to speak, leddit? Go back to the subreddit where "Tee hee ur autistic!" is considered an argument.
I'm back.
I made some good progress on my Jojo fic and planned 18 Pokemon for the hero's team in my Pokemon fic.
>>51257I would recommend you look up some pokemon and jojo forums/boards etc and get an impression what people are looking for.
>>51261The market definitely seems open for a good Pokemon fanfic, compared to JJBA who doesn't give a rat's ass about fanfic, but...
Come to think of it, it's going to be pretty hard writing a story about one guy, his 6+ pets, and his travelling buddy and her handful of pets, making the story interesting despite the frequent training scenes and battles. Most stories have assloads of characters, so the writers can have groups of them appear in different scenes. How can I write a story about these few? Have them run into someone interesting and new once per town?
>>51830The Pokemon cartoon back in the day write a lot of filler content between the games. Write Either something about places and people already seen in those or just create your own scenarios.
>compared to JJBA who doesn't give a rat's ass about fanfic, but…in that case i too would focus on pokemon more
>>51830alternatively, write a story about one of those unofficial pokemon games.
>>51830If you never noticed watching the cartoon yourself, each pokemon always had a pseudo character. This opens up a look ito the protagonists own lonlieness and psyche looking at the relationships he has with his pokemon. Think about the conversations he would have, it would mostly be very minimal along with self talking and forced dialogue. Now, the trainer would be kind of nuts seeing how the only company he would have are animals.
>>51840I always wanted to fuck the gardevoir.
>>51842i never really cared about pokemon porn only after i looked into pony porn.
>>51842It always ticks me off when artists draw them with unrealistic/anthro proportions just to make them "sexier". Gardevoir is just a stick figure in a dress.
>>51858few people want to waifu stick figures anon. You take something thats famous and make it look more similar to the general consencus of attractivity.
>>51861Eh, It's just me being autistic about it. I just usually prefer it when it doesn't deviate from in-game art, just out of y own taste...
[spoir]Also, that image is fucked: only Mega gardevoir in its shiny form has a black dress.
>>51862its good to know we have a pokemon expert here. Anyways, i dont think its wrong to take some artistic liberties in the interests of fan service.
>>51867>dat picIt's not unfair to say that we've got two pokemon experts here, desu...
>>51858This. Pretty much everything with 2 huge boobs slapped on just for the sake of it seems off. Balance is a delicate thing.
>>51887It is obligatory to say...
>>51928Recolored, because I'm bored.
Pokemon update: I couldn't pick just 6 OC Pokemon to use on the hero's team so I raised the team limit to 12. Then had 10 good Pokemon designed... but when I tried to make more, I accidentally ended up with 17 good pokemon for a team. I boosted the limit to 18 and I really want to stop it there. Training's going to be a pain in the ass for the hero but it'll allow for a lot of conversational scenes while grinding and EV training, if I do them, which I probably should.
When making Pokemon, it's surprisingly hard to resist the urge to just make all 18 pokemon amazing supergods with 600 BST each or more, then dump shitmons into the region to balance things out. Anyone have any advice on this?
>>53688few people have full 6er teams when they start, consider cutting down on that to increase the character progression on the go.
>>53697He starts with a Snivy, not a whole team. As the story goes on, he catches more Pokemon, intentionally looking for the rare ones and breeding good moves onto them.
>>54006giving him an intentionally overpowered team seems counterproductive. few people like or care for a super powerful guy who cant lose. if he is an amateur trainer who just started, give him some human flaws. emotional development to his team is important too. think back of yourself when you were first playing a pokemon game. How did you feel? How did youi react? Remember, in his reality, those are not videogame characters. Those are real animals with near human intelligence. Living beings.
>>54020He won't be overpowered. He and his team will gradually grow in competence and skill and power, you know this. Hell, he's even going to lose a few times, and not in the cliche "He loses to a gym then feels bad then tries again harder then wins" way. The gym leaders in this OC region are smart, their teams scale with the amount of badges you already have, they have strong Pokemon and good monotype strategies/coverage.
The Pokemon in this region were inspired in part by my own experiences with the Almost Any Ability/STABmons/Type-control/Sketchmons ladder, and when battles are won, I want them to feel earned.
Come on, I already know all the basics like "Don't make your OC too strong" and "Remember to give characters flaws". I want good, rare, useful writing advice I can't get anywhere else.
Regarding character flaws, what flaws should I give him? So far, I've decided on "He's a smart trainer that takes Pokemon training and strategy seriously and in a story written by someone else, he'd probably be the rival to some generic mary sue girl".
Takes losses poorly, getting salty(mad)? Greedy? Arrogant?
How do I make a character an entertaining and competent character and also kind of a dick without putting him into Korra-tier cunt territory?
>>54767I thought someone said it was already done?
>>54767On the matter of fitlit;
It is a great idea to listen to audiobooks while you fit.
So you both fit and lit at the same time!
A few days ago I walked 40km listening to some Lovecraft
(Not educational I know but I'm really into horror)
>>55098Good idea!
By the way, 17/18 slots on his team have been filled. He's got physical sweepers, special sweepers, two medica, a screener, and a few gimmicky Pokemon. Including a FEAR pokemon because
1. You don't have to train FEAR Pokemon. 18 Pokemon are a pain to train at once and keep balanced in levels.
2. FEAR is an annoying gimmick and exploitation of game mechanics
3. He's the kind of guy who would use a FEAR Pokemon. He's an asshole, especially to bad trainers.
Should I fill the final slot with a legendary Pokemon?
>>55644But legendary Pokemon are strong and apparently allowed in some tournaments.
I won't give him an Arceus at the start, I was thinking he'd get a Dialga or some OC Legendary near the story's end.
By the way, I'm making the villains of this fic an evil team inspired by sandniggers and an eviller globalist team manipulating them from behind the scenes, the hero will start as a normal kid and gradually get more redpilled on them until he joins Team Nationalists, whose actual name I will reveal when I upload this fic.
Post some of your work please. Also keep us updated.
>>55944Can't do that since I haven't uploaded anything yet, but I'll tell you when I've uploaded/updated stuff.
Great, now I have three Water Pokemon on this team. I added a Light-Type just so I'd have something to change my Drought pokemon to, dammit.
