A very precariously-bred breed with quite a great deal of cultural history in Europe. The Austrians keep studbooks of the breeds ancestors, going back to the early 1700's (due largely to many of the older records being lost during their wartime evacuations in 1809). I don't really know jack about horses. My experience with them is limited to ye olde Boy Scouts, and I ended up ignoring most of the shit about different breeds in favor of basic care and such. They were all pretty nice animals though. I ended up cleaning some things that I wasn't supposed to, just because they were scared of stupid kids getting kicked, ya know, but she was a good mare, never gave me trouble. Really felt bad for the poor things though, they were looked after by some shithead kids-- Boy Scout camp, after all-- so they I'm sure they didn't get the best treatment. One poor thing had a giant scared up sore on her back, and I remember they just cut a hole in the padding that they set the saddle on top of, so that it would poke through. Whatever the logic behind that was.

I guess I like the shorter haired breeds. They look prettier? I'd love to get into horses, riding was awesome, and I have a great respect for the animal and its history. It's just so fucking expensive. I already live in an over-priced hellhole, and I wouldn't have any real use for one. I'd love to magically one day live out in big sky country with horses and cattle and such, but life doesn't really work that way.

I haven't had very much close contact with horses since elementary school, when I rode for ~2 years on Thursdays.

Well in general, mares keep their tales down and legs together where their genitals cannot be seen. So when they are clearly visible like in these pictures, it's generally because they intend it to be that way.
