Yeah, the bots are the biggest issue.
The proof wmot that was how they vanished on the day of April 1st 2017: they day /mlpol/ was born.
It became painfully clear how bot-infested /pol/ was, because they disappeared as soon as the URL changed. All the "1 post by this ID" bait threads that get procedurally posted every 5 minutes were gone.
