I'm not quite sure what is totally actually responsible for /pol/ getting ass fucked, but I know the stuff like Hwndu and kekistan​ got adapted by people outside of /pol/, and this resulted in a bunch of people learning about /pol/ before they actually understood the culture. I guess you could also blame retards like Sargon for portraying /pol/ as this "elite group of hackers", as well as just abusing the shit out of jokes from /pol/.
