Not only were the colonies made up largely of christian sects who wanted to flee persecution, they were also opposed to what Britain was doing. The King of England was the official head of the Anglican church (the queen still is), which meant he could basically do just whatever he wanted and declare it Christian, or even declare it holy if he were cocky enough. If church and state become the same thing, they can both be corrupted by factors that effect either. Americans didn't want a similar situation in the united states.
