From what I remember, really early 4chan was shit. /v/ had hardcore shills and no one batted an eye or everyone at /v/ at the time was a good goy. If you hate a game that was popular or just released at the time (like Fallout 3), all you get is "U MAD?!" and other shit. Then again, I'm really only talking about /v/. But from what I heard from other stories, most of 4chan was really liberal at the time (and before /pol/ got created), since being left wing/democrat wasn't completely fucked up as it is before Obama got in charge and 4chan was created during the height of the 9/11 conspiracies where all of the left wingers supported the theories out of hatred for George W. Bush.
I ran off to 420chan in 2008 for /wooo/, before Spardot fucked everything up, from what I remember, /vg/ (which is their version of /v/) was a lot better, since there is actual discussion and arguments at the time on games and /wooo/ was just a mix of memes, shit posting, and pro wrestling. I actually found out about 420chan when someone hacked TNA Wrestling's "Who is Suicide?" Myspace page and it got reported on rajah.com
