>>190109Call me a faggot if you want but Equestria Girls is just wasted potential incarnate.
Movie one is a generic shitty high school kid's film starring Twilight, knockoff Twilight, and five knockoff versions of her friends.
You'd think the different world would make her friends different, but no, they're just dumber.
Movie 2 is about redemption. It redeems knockoff Twilight into a kind, compassionate, loveable woman and it redeems the concept by bumping up the budget and doing "Battle of the bands", one of the only good teen movie plots ever. It says there's magic in this world, AND it was the dumping ground for magical bullshit old Equestrians couldn't deal with. It sets up the Sirens and redeemds the very concept of Equestria Girls.
Then there's one that introduces Sci-Twi, puts cute girls on motocross bikes, and sets up the idea that Sci-Twi needs to grow as a person and "Embrace the magic inside her", but...
Why is there darkness inside her, and not inside the real Twilight? Why does nobody except Sci-Twi address the darkness inside her? Everyone pushes Sci-Twi to be more like the real Twilight, and that would be fine if the writers decided to do a "Actually, Sci-Twi needs to overcome her darkness and become her own best version of herself" thing, but I guess hasbro executives said no to anything deep or introspective like a pony hugging her angry dark side to turn her into light or anything that deep.
Sunset Shimmer is written to be a great protagonist. A former smug cocky Gary Motherfucking Oak-like woman turned kind and compassionate by being shown kindness and compassion. She worked to redeem herself, and she earned her redemption. But as soon as Sci-Twi joins the side of the heroes, Sunset wants Sci-Twi to become the new main protagonist. Sci-Twi doesn't want to be the new main hero, and she shouldn't have to be. The idea of an AU Twilight in a support role is fine.
Besides, just as Twilight was the perfect "Canterlot fish in a Ponyville pond" protagonist for MLP, Sunset is the perfect "Equestrian fish in a human world pond" for EQG.
The next movie was written to cash in on how popular superheroes were at the time, even though a spy movie would have been more fun, more original, and better-suited to having toys made out of it. It was literally just a "Kids go to summer camp, fight a secret monster there, and go home" movie. I liked this movie, but it wasn't anywhere near as good as Rainbow Rocks.
Then EQG is shot in the back and used for some shitty DVD specials. Only thing I know about those is there's one where Sunset goes back to Equestria, not so she can say sorry to Celestia or her parents, but so she can take Glimmer back to the human world, so she can wear a stupid "Cool girl who's too cool for girly trendy clothes" outfit that doesn't suit her at all, and the writers can be forced at gunpoint to make Glimmer and Sunset say "Wow, Glimmer! It's so nice that we're both redeemed former villains who are such good friends!" over and over, then there's some invisible villain or something.
