When I did retail I always just told people I can't give change unless they make a purchase, that usually drives off the degenerates and homeless people. Be polite but assertive; make sure the guy knows that you're not going to lose your cool and you're not going to give him what he wants.

That nog probably tried to pull the same con at 12 different stores before he came to yours and you were the first one he found that was willing to do it. Contrary to what you'd think "people" like that usually don't make trouble, they always look for the path of least resistance and they're used to being told to fuck off. Plus the last thing they ever want is to escalate the situation to the point where the cops get called, because the cops are usually familiar with the local hoods and their shenanigans. Just tell him to hit the road next time.

Also, don't ever feel guilty about racially profiling people. Your first impressions about someone are usually accurate.

I loved mlpol - posting in every sort of discussion, protecting it from raiders and counter-raiding 4chan. But my faith has been shaken. I feel a sense of disgust now. mlpol draws me as a light does a moth, but I think I may take a break now
