I for one have seen tons of my friends sucked into it, and they specifically cite Tara’s twitter feed as “enlightning” them.
There’s got to be something we can do about this…

Unfortunately there's a certain breed of fanboy who is incapable of separating the things they enjoy from the people who create them, and equate talent in the entertainment/artistic sphere with actual intelligence. It's part of the reason that actors and musicians have been able to wield so much cultural and political influence despite the fact that the vast majority of them are dumber than your average Wal Mart shopper. disclaimer: I just realized that I am typing this while wearing a t-shirt that says "Frank Zappa for President" while eating a bowl of cereal that I bought at Wal Mart lmao Basically, there's a certain kind of person whose worldview can be reduced to "I enjoy My Little Pony and Twilight Sparkle is my favorite character. Twilight Sparkle is voiced by Tara Strong, therefore Tara Strong is the same person as Twilight Sparkle. If Tara Strong thinks Donald Trump is evil then Twilight Sparkle thinks Donald Trump is evil. Cult of celebrity is actually a pretty good example of why democracy never works in the long run. People are not meant to govern themselves; like we're literally not genetically wired for it. Human social organization is similar to the alpha/beta structure that monkeys and wolves and animals like that have. Some of us are naturally dominant and tend to assume leadership roles, most of us will just follow whoever appears strongest. The trouble with a system that treats everyone as equal is that it tends to enable people who frankly shouldn't be at all influential to wield a large amount of influence. The end result is a mass of bronies treating the social media ramblings of some empty-headed twat as wisdom for the ages just because she's the voice of a cartoon pony they have a boner for.

I think what you're talking about is called something like a "para-social bond". You see these people often on TV, and they're in roles that you empathize with, almost like they're with you in person interacting with you. This forms bonds kind of like you would form by becoming close friends with someone.
Ayadin Paladin on YouTube talks about this kind of thing a lot. Her videos are well-sourced and thorough. She's kind of like a TL;DR focusing on the humanities and social sciences. The more scientific, data-driven side of it. She's disgusted at how corrupt she's found it to be once she got there.
There are indeed people who seem born to be cult members with no independant thought.
Frankly, I stopped liking Tara after she called herself "queen of the bronies". She grabbed that title, it wasn't given to her. It was arrogant, and she started trying to use the fans rather than just giving the odd little interaction here and there.
I stopped liking Laura after she became open about being a feminist. I think it was around shirt gate, where she sided with the feminist horde. She was only getting worse from then on, and I haven't been catching up with it.
If you want to get pedantic about it, and why wouldn't you?, we're probably not meant to run in organizations bigger than the around 130 people of Dunbar's number. That's the max number of people you can have an ongoing personal relationship with. As a side note, this is also the maximum number of people you can have in anything like a communist… commune not sure if I'm using the words right, before things start to break down. If you have a population that tiny, then you can treat it like an extended close family with everything being shared, and everyone being accountable with rules other than basic law and order.

Just remind them that it is not fascistic to not give someone a trial if they aren't being charged with a crime, just not being let in since they didn't file papers. Analogies are useful, as people will usually begin to question themselves even if they claim that it is different. For example, a good enough analogy would be that if a doctor who is not in emergency medicine doesn't let you in without an appointment, the doctor has done nothing wrong, and you cannot claim that the doctor is harming you, since you are no worse off. Thus is the situation at the border. If we just tell them that they don't have their papers so we will just send them back to Mexico, it is the same thing: They are no worse off than they were before.
Another good thing to do is remind people that child sex trafficking is much more common in Mexico and south than North of it, and thus it is likely a good precaution to separate people from people who cannot be verified as their parents for at least a couple days while they figure it out, for the safety of the children.
