Sorry for the wall of text. TLDR: Yes, I think reading Fallout Equestria is worth it. I listed some personal recommendations below to help sift through the garbage on fimfiction and provide a starting point.

It depends on what you are looking for. The FOE fanfiction universe has a lot to offer. The groundwork and world building done in FOE strikes a good balance between incorporating Fallout lore and creating its own original ideas. A common explanation of how it differs from usual crossovers is that it is Ponies IF Fallout not ponies in Fallout. The setting describes Equestria's decent into a nuclear ruin rather than simply assuming it is or placing the characters into such a setting.

A common complaint is that its plot is similar to Fallout sometimes, but I really don't know what people were expecting in a crossover. The story is long, but it reads more like a Fallout play through or a RPG campaign than a single story. Some complain about this, but I feel it makes sense. Nobody plays a Fallout game just to run the main quest and be done. Little Pip (the mane character) meets all kinds of ponies and does all kinds of stuff. The fic isn't perfect. There are somethings inside of it that did not age well. However, I don't hold super high expectations for fanfiction, so little problems here and there don't unnerve me too much. Like some shitbag on the internet is writing highly specific pony crossover fanfiction on the internet for free, its never going to be a magnum opus like Hamlet or anything.

I didn't read the original first, and its kinda fun to have to figure out what's going on when a side fic mentions something from the original. I also didn't know any of my fallout lore until I read FOE so that also made it super fun for me. I've addressed some common criticisms in the above paragraph, but don't let that deter you. FOE is great stuff and I really enjoyed my first time reading FOE and its various sidefics. If you want to try some FOE, but don't want to go into the long ass original first, I'll link some good side fics down below.

Follows an oblivious filly who survived what happened to Canterlot in the war and is trying to find her mom. Funny and sad at the same time. I was surprised how much I liked this one when I read it, don't recommend for a first FOE read.
