I'm curious. What are /mlpol/'s thoughts about Ronald Reagan? On the one hand, he won the Cold War, ushered in the biggest economic boom in recent history, stood up for traditional values in a decadent era, and was probably the last American president who was iconic for the right reasons. On the other hand, he basically created the neoconservative foreign policy doctrine of "let's bomb and invade everyone to spread democracy," and his economic boom was mostly based on globalist free-trade bullshit that helped baby boomers get very rich in the short term but ultimately fucked the next generation over. Every Republican president since has tried to emulate his agenda and the results have mostly been uninspiring.

Was Reagan based or did he accelerate the decline of America?

Reagan in many ways is a reflected Trump (and Trump is many ways a reflected Reagan), so there is many ways to love him or hate him. In my case, I hate him more than Trump- not that I hate Trump. Reagan was relaxed on immigration policy, took out America out of a closed economy, help cause the Savings and Loans Crisis, and later took back out of his tax cuts. Don't forget the frivolous defense spending like the Star Wars program. At same time though, he did do tax cuts, put stimulus into the economy, and maintain America's infrastructure. Which Trump is about to do/has done. I don't necessary believe anything he did caused the Soviet Union to fall directly, but rather the actions done by Gorbachev. And, I don't think he started the neo-con tradition. That debatably started with some Trotskyists earlier and around the Vietnam War.
I don't think he was based, but he wasn't too terrible.

Read the Reykjavik File or the book The Dead Hand. It wasn't much of an issue as the Soviets knew how to counter the SDI, and the their military industrial complex wanted it. Cost wasn't an objective.
