Depends on what part of California. The state as a whole has a lot of problems but if you're talking about a small town rural area you'd probably be fine there. However if you're talking about a major city I'd say stay clear. Urban California is about as close as it gets to hell on earth in the United States.

In general though, that area has more in common with Brazil and Latin American countries than the United States. I'd recommend Indiana. Taxes aren't bad, it's consistently been a red state with very conservative gun laws, and it's predominantly white with a lot of German heritage especially in the rural areas. The two downsides are unpredictable weather and really shitty drivers in urban areas.

On a related note, does anyone here know anything about Ohio, specifically the Columbus area? I've been trying to find an escape route out of the West Coast for a while now and I've been looking at that city. Rent seems reasonable, the state is mostly red, and think I might realistically be able to get work out that way.
