Since I can post more regularly now I've decided to do a little spiel on how and why web forums become shit or die out. I think it is important to know about why web forums die because then we can find ways to prevent /mlpol/ from dying. I'm also doing this to celebrate 1 year of this sub-culture surviving.
First I will talk about the typical story of how a forum dies by providing an example, the old /mlpol/ discord server. I was one of the first few people who joined it back when 4mlpol was still a thing. The server was one of the best discord servers I had ever joined. Everyone was posting memes and p0ny p0rn, there was shitposting going on in voice chats, vidya sessions being played and of course raids being planned. It really felt like what I thought was the idealized version of 4chan, without the complete anonymity of course. (This probably had a major role in the death of the server, names and roles can create ego which is the number one thing that is killing the internet)
It all started to die down after the first week. This should have been expected of course, but it really started to die down when the "Drama" started. People often complain that it is drama that kills communities. This is true, but instead of looking at the source they often just bring down the banhammer. Banning anyone who hurts the feelings of others. What they don't realize is that the source behind drama are ego driven administrators, moralfaggers and shills. We'll look at all three and I'll provide an example of where they were rampant on the /mlpol/ discord server and how we can stop them from happening.
I guess before I go into the problems with the administration with the old /mlpol/ server I will have to make a disclaimer, I was one of the moderators on the old server. I am also one of the last few of the original mod team that was chosen during the first week of the server, the others either left, were found out to be shills or have just become inactive over the year. The original server was created by a Belorussian who was obsessed with the rule 63 version of Discord from the show. I hardly knew anything about him, all I knew was that he was a college student and basically just created the server and left it for us to use. He was probably both the worst and best admin I've ever met. His common absence caused the server the basically run by itself, with the mods stepping in to help with raiders and shills and shaping the server. However this is when the trouble begins, as arguments rose when important decisions needed to be made. The mod team then fractured into 4 factions. One that was more favored by the Head Moderator, which included some "controversial" mods. One that was popular with a majority of the users of the server. One that favored shills and infiltrators. And my small faction which included only me and I tried to keep out of shit. Any attempt made to stop the drama was pointless, as another conflict started a week later. Often drama that started in the admin chats leaked into general chatrooms and caused major shitstorms that made people leave.
So what can we learn from this? The first thing I would do is don't join a server where the admin spends most of his day hacking the DNC instead of actively participating in the community. Second thing I would do is only choose a few mods so that at least 1 person is active for all timezones. I would also make sure that they can be trustworthy. Remove their moderating power first sign of them allowing rules to be broken. Ego is the result of cult worship of moderators that can cause the worshiped mods to become egocentric and think that they are above everyone else on the server while their real purpose is to do it for free. The mod faction that was popular with the userbase left the old /mlpol/ server and created their own after it fell apart. I have befriended them only because they're what's left that isn't toxic, and I'm afraid that any conflict that occurs will just create a larger opportunity for factions to form within it. Which is why I support the idea of a vetting system that they now use in the new mlpol server, as it prevents another cult of personality forming and causing hostilities. My ideal /mlpol/ server and admin team really would be just like it currently is with the admin team here on mlpol.net. I think Tea with Atlas is a great idea, more transparency with the community is completely necessary and it's something the old /mlpol/ server didn't have. Even though nobody listens to Tea with Atlas, I'm glad it exists. Atlas was even quick to remove mods that were being cancerous. I congratulate him on success, this chan has been properly managed with little drama.
In the next part I will talk about how moralfagging ruined the old /mlpol/ server. I'll also answer any question you have and also adjust any statements or positions I have made here if they are properly critiqued.
Thank you for reading!
>>130562Why not just start a thread about this? This is going to get us very off topic here very quickly.
>>130562Damn. This is a very good post
>>130562>>130616Yeah, definitely start a new thread for this.
Nice work Nep. Unfortunately I'm going to have to put ANN on hiatus for a good while. We're getting the house renovated very soon and there's still a lot of work to be done before the workers arrive. You, however, can continue Nep Station if you want to.
>>130643Sure thing.
I guess it'll be my duty to fill the void.
I'll post again later today and answer questions or anything. Doesn't even need to be related to the post.
>>130757Here's an honest question, who are you? Besides posting Nep, and tripfagging, I have no idea what content you are supposed to be producing. If you produce nothing why tripfag?
>>130758Well, ANN asked me to write opinionated articles or something like it for ANN. I think he intended me to write once a week but I'm really fucking lazy plus I have other shit to deal with irl which causes me to maybe post something at least once a month. I like to tripfag because it gets autist's noggins joggin. I can post quite regulary now for a few weeks so I'm trying to write as much as I can.
>>130643Hope your renovating goes well ANN
>>130761A better excuse than what most tripfagging cunts use. Carry on.
>>130787Nigger, I've been here since the beginning. I only use the /mlpol/ board, and almost completely ignore the discord though. I've seen Nep Nep before, but just assumed they were a faggot trying to get attention.
>>130788See? We both make mistakes
