>>114573If you mean you are not sure what your opinion on intellectual property in general is.
For:
A farmer (who owns himself, the land, the seed etc. and put the time in to grow the crops) owns his crops and any money he earns from selling those crops, if anyone tries to take them away from him that is theft regardless if it is taken but the state or his neighbor.
Therefore a musician(, architect, painter, scientist…) who owns himself, the paper etc. writes a song (while the farmer used his body to water the plants the musician used his brain to do his work), he owns the song and any money he earns from selling his work, if anyone tries to reduce the money he makes from it that is still theft.
Nobody would work for nothing, by giving intellectual property rights you ensure that a person gets all the money from it. I know the cure for cancer would be valuable but hard to discover, if I go into debt to find it and there is intellectual property rights I'm rich, if not I'm fucked.
Against:
All monopoly turns out shit, if the government has a monopoly on something it is almost always worse than free market alternatives and if government gives monopoly rights to a company then the company turns to shit.
Intellectual property rights do not say "you can make this" they say "everyone else cannot make this", so a monopoly, why would we think that this monopoly would turn out any better.
If you know how to play a set of musical notes in an order that people want to listen what right does the government have banning you from making those noises?
Imagine how good the music today would be if there was no youtube, limewire, radio etc. Each person takes massive inspiration from what is already created and builds upon it, intellectual property just stops that.
There have not been any strong studies done to prove that strong intellectual property laws means lots more creations.
IP laws do mean more time and money going to lawyers ensuring these laws are not breached.
Less money and interest goes into areas of research that can not be protected for example a mathematical equation can not be protected but a slight modification on an engine or the McDonalds logo can be.
Of course there are a few different types of intellectual property; trademark, copyright, patent, trade secrets… and each has good and bad points.
In regards to being concerned with this "My Local Bobby" company, they are just enforcing the law if you have a problem with their actions then it is the law that needs to be changed not the company that enforces it.
