Roleplaying on /vx/: How does it work?

/vx/ is the board this site uses for games; shortly after it was estabished, it was expanded to include ttrpg discussion and even the roleplayng thereof, directly on the board itsef. Roleplaying is something unique to /mlpol/, since it's banned on /mlp/ and ponies are banned everwhere else on 4chan.
Over these past few years, we've had a few ambitious anons attempt to run games run on his board; mostly using some corruption of d&d. Of the pbp games that have been run on /vx/, only a couple of them have been long-lasting, and even fewer have been finished. Nevertheless, there's a demographic of dedicated (or tenacious) Anons who believe that this boad is an ideal place for roleplay.
So I ask, how exactly does roleplaying on /vx/ work? Is it fun? Is it as fun as it could be? What works or doesn't work? Is /vx/ a good medium for roleplaying games, or does i have much to be desired? What do you like or dislike about roleplaying here? If you've played a game, have there beenany elements tha have constrained your experience? If you don' like ttrpgs, would you appreciate roleplay of any other kind, with or without ponies?
We've got four years of experence to reflect on, so I'd like to hear from nyone who has rolepayed or would like to roleplay on this board, or even anyone who has zero interest and just wants to spout criticisms (keep drama to a minimum please).

P.S: If you played OiE:REG, you're a roleplayer too. Tell us about your gaming experience.

Pony ass for guaranteed replies.

There are pros and cons to using this format for roleplay. It is very easy to keep track of actions as the history is a simple search through the thread to find. Playing with this format also allows for multiple players as well as images that really help sell the mood despite the limited contact. A simple image can help set the tone for an encounter or location. Furthermore, you can use the integrated dice command built into this code to make all actions very clear.

Some downsides to this method of roleplay would be organization. You and the DM have to be ready at the same time to get effective progress done. This is easier when you announce your intentions to return at a certain time, but if you fail to do this, you could be waiting a long time for responses, which slows the game down when you had the energy to continue. Another is the increased chances of forgetting things as the game progresses if you don’t have everything organized personally as well. Eventually the game will continue down so many posts that you will lose track of stats, if the game focuses on those, or personality traits or objectives that you had at one point, but throughout the game you slowly move away from, which can confuse anyone reading the full thing to the present.

However, that last bit is also one of the better parts. Anyone can read the history of the game and enjoy how it has been going and might just ask to join if they are interested in the story. They can get a feeling for the word and the characters without even meeting them in the game, which any other format is lacking in. Overall, the major limiting factor is motivation to participate. Overcome that and there isn’t really anything stopping a great campaign. It just takes a bit more motivation than other methods.

>first paragraph
All certainly good points. I'm no certain how a chansite supports gaming in comparisons to most other online gaming media, but it's at least usuable. I have personally played in a few games here, and I can say it at least supports pbp style games, and fun ones too. The lack of voce chat is a it constraining though.
>second paragraph
>Some downsides to this method of roleplay would be organization. You and the DM have to be ready at the same time to get effective progress done.
That's really just an issue with online roleplay in general, not this board or this community.
>This is easier when you announce your intentions to return at a certain time, but if you fail to do this, you could be waiting a long time for responses, which slows the game down when you had the energy to continue.
The inability to DM/ping individual players is indeed an obstacle. I guess it's a price to be payed for anonymity.
>Another is the increased chances of forgetting things as the game progresses if you don’t have everything organized personally as well. Eventually the game will continue down so many posts that you will lose track of stats, if the game focuses on those, or personality traits or objectives that you had at one point
This can be fixed by some good planning or notetaking and adventure structure; also just a gneral roleplay issue, not excusive to this board.
>but throughout the game you slowly move away from, which can confuse anyone reading the full thing to the present.
I guess that's unique to us in the games here don't have consistent parties, which is just a thing to be expcted on chansites usin pbp structure.
>Anyone can read the history of the game and enjoy how it has been going and might just ask to join if they are interested in the story. They can get a feeling for the word and the characters without even meeting them in the game, which any other format is lacking in.
In my experience, most games usually do this by letting new players listen to session recordings or reading a new players document. I guess it's a boon for lurkers though, which makes roeplaying on a chansite special in its ow way. It's kind of like interactive greentext in that regard, which is exactly what I want to promote on /mlpol/.
>Overall, the major limiting factor is motivation to participate.
Eh, I woldn't say that. This board definiely has people who like roleplaying or are interested in roleplay. I don't think lack of moivation is really the main limitor. Some roleplayers might just have higher standards for roleplay mediums, or perhaps they simly haven't found the right games that they want to partake in.
>It just takes a bit more motivation than other methods.
See, I thought about this, but there has to be a bit more to it than that, doesn't it. Roleplaying actual ttrpgs (not just CYOAs or /qst/ threads) on a chansite is an uconventional method to begin with, so there must be some unique ways to make it work here. On this very board there are multiple threads for games that basically died in the womb, and of the ones that have managed to start not very many have actually finished their adventures, and not or any lack of trying on part of the roleplayers involved. Nevertheless, there's still a number of anons who enjoy roleplaying here at least weekly, and probably even more who would like to rolelay here. I'm trying to get to the bottom of what makes a chansite game good so that we can bring more great roleplay to this board.
Maybe I'm simply overanalyzing it and the trick is to just jump into it and start roleplaying, hope it will snowball from there.

pony ass, because I was about to bump before I saw the reply.

I haven't done any RP on the board, but I have done plenty of RP elsewhere. There were a couple of different people in different play-by-post games where we did a crap ton of world building before starting with some sort of goal in mind.
After starting, the main way progress was made was from the lengthy replies. Most replies were a paragraph or three, but some were 1k words or more. We got around the 'but I would have done an action in the middle of that paragraph' issue by editing posts, sometimes after long discussions about how certain world-building mechanics work or just general clarification.
I guess that's the two main reasons why I haven't done any RPing on the board here. No nice way to edit posts, and short replies never seem (to me) to get enough done.

Technically one of those two lengthy RPs I'm in is still going. I just stopped though because I hate discord so much.

Interesting. Play-by-post has its pros and cons. It's especially good for typing out vivid descriptions of scenes, and even for dialogue. I once had a game that began as play-by-post, but turned into voice chat because I thought it was going too slow. The result was that combat sped up and the story progressed, but my dialogue/scenes suffered, since my stuttering self struggled to describe imagery and roleplay NPCs if I didn't wite the lines ahead of time.
As for post sizes, /mlpol/ has the benefit of a 6000 character limit, which I hope is at least enough for roleplay. There is indeed no way to edit posts as a user, so if you make a mistake you'll just have to copy-paste/retype a new post after deleting it, or leave a reply correcting it. If you lose your password and it's really important to fix, you could probably just report the post and politely ask the jannies to delete it for you.
But yeah, those are some limitations, although not hard to work around. It certainly never stopped /qst/ from doing their thing, or various CYOAs on 4chan/8chan.

How many games have run on this board? I think about seven in total, although most are unfinished.

I think there's been about five so far, maybe 13 if you include the ones that never got off of the ground.

Every roleplay thread that's ever been made here still exists on the catalog. It's not hard to count them.

I've been fixing to open up some new pbp games on /mlpol/ for a while. I've been researching methods to keep game speed open.
I'll probably make threads or them soon. Just reply here if you're interested.

I'm considering running a game on this board, but idk if it's the best idea.
