Could we come up with characters and setting for a G4 spinoff show?

Hasbro has a death-grip on the names and appearances of the original ponies, but as far as I know we could still legally make a G4 spinoff as long as we never showed or mentioned the same ponies or places. I think we could come up with a new little town somewhere far from the events FiM has taken place in, and populate it with new ponies that Hasbro has no control over.

Besides, creating collaborative settings is already fun in itself too. What do you think?

For starters, I've thought about a small town that started as a logging mill at the edge of a giant forest, and has since grown to about the size of Ponyville. The fantastic forest of giant trees would have provided the town with massive logs large enough to build parts or even entire houses straight out of them, and the oldest standing buildings would even be treehouses like Twilights old library.

While the forest is massive, the ponies use it sustainably. The ponies avoid exploiting the land, and the deepest parts of the forest are still ripe for unexplored adventures.

As the logging has slowed down, farming and other more sustainable industries have settled in too, leading the logging camp to evolving into the nice little hamlet it currently is.

The first character I thought of is a pegasus that loves nature. She treks in the woods helping the animals, and has a lot of first-hand knowledge about the plants and creatures that live there. Bold but not foolhardy, she basically does Fluttershy's job but is more outgoing about it.

Pic related is just an early idea I made with Pony Creator to have something to work with and bound to need changes and improvements. The original idea was to make her an earth pony so she'd have a reason to trek rather than fly over the treetops, but in a forest full of gigantic trees the ability to reach high places opens a lot more possibilities, so it's better to say she just likes feeling the ground under her hooves. No idea for the name or cutiemark yet, but they're bound to come up as the rest of the characters get planned out.

I am all for this. If Hasbro wants to kill Ponyville sadly it falls upon us to save it. Would hope Faust came out and stated that Hasbro is killing what is good with the show.
We could perhaps use the original characters if we did it as an underground project releasing via torrent and reuploads to different video sites, but it would be a hassle. But perhaps using the OC Hasbro stole is the best fuck you one can do to them.

>Settlers 2 with ponies

That's actually a great idea! The game is sprite-based, and the sprites have so few pixels that even I could probably make pony replacements for them. If anyone knows how to do the technical part of this, I'm all in!

>>96506
Are you talking about an entirely new game or just modding? A mod replacing the characters from Settlers 2 would be a realistically sized task to get started with, although afterwards the pony spirtes could be used for anything else as well.

>>96505
If you mean the muzzle, that's because I tried to use the closest slim pony look I could find from the pony creator. As she spends a lot of time hiking in the nature, I think a fit but not strong body would suit her the best.

It might be necessary to give the new cast similar bodies to help with recycling animations though.

At this point I must admit that pony creator doesn't really help with describing new ponies as they tend to look too bland to even give an idea of what you're trying to describe.

Anyway, the second pony I've thought of is a skilled but modest craftspony. She's the best carpenter of the town, and likes making personalized gifts to her friends. Unlike Rarity, she's happy with her small workshop and doesn't have a drive to expand her business, meaning it's often up to her friends to help her catch opportunities outside her area of expertise. Naturally this occasionally brings up some conflicts between her friends helping her expand her business, and her own love of freedom and simply doing what she likes.

Yet another lumber-related idea. I ended up with several because I started by planning the premise for the new town to base the show in, but we really need to start thinking of more non-forest related ideas next or the show starts to look obsessed with the topic.

Anyway, the pony I came up with does the plans for logging operations and replants trees once they're done. She's great at getting the big picture, and is often the one to point out to her less attentive friends and co-workers when they're about to do something that would bite them in the butt later on. I think her cutiemark could be a tree in a heart, to symbolize her understanding of natural balance.

That actually brings up another potentially interesting feature for the setting: Underground caverns. I don't immediately have any unique ideas for them, but they could definitely hold all kinds of interesting adventures for the ponies who dare to venture there.

Actually, while writing the last paragraph I did get one idea: We could have the caverns discovered through a jewel mine ran by a stubborn old donkey, who refuses to let the occasional monsters escaping the caverns force him to shut down his mine. This could serve as an interesting location for new adventures, as well as a source of weird monsters as long as it wouldn't get overused.

I'm delighted that there are people with talents and experience already interested, and the animation puppets are definitely good for the fandom even if this particular project didn't get to use them.

Now it's still time to come up with enough new ponies and locations to work with, as we can't use anything already owned by Hasbro. This shouldn't take long since anyone can come up with ideas, and after that we'll get to deciding which of them to implement in the show before we actually start making it.

>>96609
I haven't done animation myself since Deluxe Paint, but from the sounds of it the tools have indeed improved. It's still going to be by far the most time-consuming part of the project, so we'll need as many animators as we can when it's time to start drawing.

The characters and settings should really be decided in a writer room. You don't want your universe designed by a comittee. That's how you end up with FiM seasons 3-7. There has to be more collaboration and at least one guy readily shooting down everyone else's ideas.

I agree with this completely, but I like using the brainstorming technique for coming up with new ideas. Basically, first come up with as many ideas as possible, then toss those that obviously won't work, and then merge and refine the remaining ones. I'll come up with a cohesive and polished world in time, but for now any and all ideas help by giving us something to work with.

A recent example is that while the goal of this setting is to sincerely make a new Equestrian location in the spirit of the original show, the Elements of Inebriation parody served to remind me that without Hasbro's limitation we can indeed use alcohol in this project. While rowdy drunkenness and swearing would be utterly counterproductive for adhering to the cuteness and wonderment of the show, we can still make a party pony that's closer to Berry Punch than Pinkie Pie as long as we do it nicely.

It's now 3AM here, but I promise that by the time I wake up I'll have a working idea of this character fleshed out. Goodnight!

Making a show is expensive. In the leaks it shows that Hasbro budgeted $8 million for the next season of MLP. $8 million is not something that anyone can just magic up. Going by corporate averages at least a third of that money goes to pay salaries. Assuming that you can get rid of all expenses besides salaries, that still leaves a required budget of $2.5 million. To make anything work you need to have some of that money one hand. Why is it so expensive? The reason making a show is so expensive is the animation. To make 1 minute of animation can cost anywhere between $1k-$10K. So to make a single 22 minute episode can run you anywhere from $22k-$220K depending on quality. So for a full 13 Episode season it could cost anywhere between $286K-$2,860K to make depending on quality. Those costs are for the animation alone, and do not factor other costs to make the show and taxes. Then consider that most cartoons are money sinks that generate no profit. Seems pretty hard to make a show don't it?

Now let us consider volunteers. what >>96608 does not seem to realize is that these people advertising their skills would be volunteers. They would have to support themselves through other methods, and would not be able to devote their full time towards this project. Furthermore, a volunteer run project can not acquire quality talent, and has to use what they have. No offense to artists in the community, but many of you aren't full time professionals. Merely okay volunteers can hurt the quality of any project. There is also the fact that there would be nothing to bind the volunteers to a project, and if a key member leaves the whole project is dead in the water. Also, who the fuck wants to get paid nothing for their work? Imo simply getting some volunteers together is not a good strategy.

Anyone can come up with an idea as you say >>96626, do you have a business plan to back it up?

New partypony idea started, although I think we'll need to find ways to make many of the ponies more energetic before they'll be ready for the show. This one in particular I could use some help with, as Pinkie Pie wasn't exactly my favorite pony so trying to come up with a new energetic party pony is difficult for me.

As always, the pony creator stock assets serve more like an icon for the pony being worked on than a finished model.

For this pony, I thought she could be the energetic mailmare of the town, who happens to have a lot of time for party planning and such on behalf of getting her job done in a jiffy with plenty of energy to spare. Her main modus operandi is helping ponies keep a positive attitude by keeping them from stressing too much. This advice might not be that helpful in itself, but she often brings refreshments with her which really helps her case.

I've been planning a sheriff character too, but I'm hesitant to make her a main character as having an authority figure in the main cast could easily skew a lot of things. She couldn't exactly ask her personal friends to deal justice with her, and many adventures would become either too trivial or too tedious if legal powers and limitations were included.

Still, I think she'd make a nice side character: A well-loved sheriff that takes great pride in the "protect and serve" aspect of her job. She upholds the pony law, but sees it as more of a tool for her true job of keeping the town safe and in harmony.

This could work by emphasizing how the new Applejack is a "bad girl". Make sure the soccer moms know that Hasbro intends to deliberately make one of the characters a foul-mouthed delinquent from the ghetto.

It also doesn't help that we have no idea what the "hard work" she had to do to make up for her small size was, so it's only natural to conclude that it means crime.

No to doubt you, but literally every fanfic writer thinks this. We would need more than this too, dedication is important. The team lead is the hardest person to replace.
Multiple leads would probably be needed that all shared similar vision so that the loss of one wouldn't kill the project.

My latest idea for the cast is the main magic pony of the setting. While she has never gone to a dedicated magic school, she's an avid reader and regularly orders advanced magic books from an esteemed library to study on her own. She's not exceptionally powerful, but she has a lot of magical knowledge and often pushes herself to the brink of fainting trying to cast spells meant for much higher level unicorns.

It would be suitable to have her work at the local library herself, but I think that would be too similar with Twilight. One wild idea would be to have her be a baker, as studying and experimenting apply to both magic and baking alike. On the other hand, having her live in a classic wizard tower would be cute, interesting, and completely in the shows style, so it would be nice to come up with a profession that goes together with that.

This is indeed something I could use more feedback from Pinkie Pie fans on.

The way I've thought about this pony, she's not stupid or irrensponsible, but simply tries to lighten the mood and make everyone happier with whatever they're doing. She's the kind of pony who would break wind during a dramatic silence (if ponies farted, that is) and sees the bright side in every situation even if it goes into gallows humor territory. Maud Pie humor delivered with Pinkie Pie cheerfulness.

This doesn't immediately lend itself to the fourth wall breaks and wild parties that Pinkie Pie throws, but I don't know whether or not it needs to. Does the pony arranging parties need to be one from the main cast, and does the main cast need someone that zany in it?

I just noticed a character the show needs maybe the most: Audience surrogate. Just like the original show had Twilight moving into Ponville, I think this show needs a similar "main character" in the sense that she's as new to the setting as the audience is. This would give room for exposition, as well as explain why the main characters haven't befriended each other before. This is also the character that affects the opening episode the most, since it will have to be about her moving to the town and meeting the other main ponies, preferably with an adventure.

At first I thought she could have been sent there to check out the freshly opened underground caverns and ending up having to stop some kind of sealed evil that was trapped there, but I realized that making the first episode to introduce the caverns start off with them as a threat would make it seem like sealing them up would be an obvious choice, and making the audience frustrated by ponies not doing just that.

Another idea is to have the main character just move to the new town for some reason, such as getting away from her boring old hometown or getting peace from the bustle of a city life. She'd still need some reason to go on an adventure though, so suggestions are welcome.

In fact, there's no strict rule that she'd actually have to meet all her new friends in the very first episode, although that would help set all characters on the same starting line.

Just got it, she could be a writer moving in a peaceful little town to work in peace. Not only would this give her a reason to move there in the first place, but it would give her more time to roam around experiencing things than if she worked a "real" job there. When relevant, she could also end episodes by writing her new book, telling about what she learned or just using her recent experiences as inspiration.

>>96963
That looks amazing! Also, I'm glad you drew her because she's the pony whose design I'm already satisfied with.

I made a little edit to make her tail more uniformly puffy like her mane, as the amount of detail came as a limitation of the pony creator part selection. You really nailed the idea of a cute little pony in a big puffy mane trying to be a serious magician!

As for personality, I wouldn't make her arrogant. Rather than holding herself above everyone else, she believes she has the pontential for be much more and to reach much higher. While she genuinely does know more about magic than anypony else in the town, the manlet comparison hits her spot on in that it's not the lack of knowledge that's holding her back, but the natural limitations of her inherent magical power.

Once in a while she actually does succeed in exceeding everyponys expectations, either by sheer determination or by coming up with easier ways to cast complex spells. She's always triumphant about these, while most other ponies remind her that she might seriously mess herself up if she keeps pushing her limits like this.

As long as the project is simple, like the Dawn Somewhere's Nepotism Adventure Series, I could see this work out. But as >>96821 said, it's going to be expensive.

My advice is this, first of all, you need to get it in your mind, you aren't going to even come close to matching FiM in term of animation quality no matter what, if you can't drill that into your mind, don't do such an ambitious project. Second, don't accept all volunteers and have the teams be small. Company have entire branches to manage teams for a reason, if your team get to big, communications is going to fall apart. Only pick the best of the best. Third, expect to have no free time in-between you working a job and you working for the project. That project is your free time, if you do this project, accept that you choose a stressful free time. Of course that is where child-prodigy labor comes in, if a teen have good enough skill, and he's still in school, then he's going to contribute a lot to the project. Question is where to find such a child.

If you really want to make a project, I suggest you assemble a team for a game instead, as vidya don't have such a high entry-level to enter compared to cartoons.

I agree, as "done" is more important than "perfect". It's better to have simple animations from few angles than aim too high and fail. Simple style isn't nearly as bad as inconsistent one, and animators getting tired and quitting halfway through would naturally be the worst possible thing.

I just rewatched Dusk's Dawn to remind myself of how bad animation can be. The sheer technical quality of it is even better than what I'd set as a standard, but the way it is used, among everything else, is ruined by bad decisions. Doing a fraction of that work would get superior results solely by the virtue of not doing BAD work.

>game

In fact, what I've always wanted is an open source project for a sandbox "toy" where NPC ponies work autonomously and you can mess with them however you like. Something like that would provide endless pony entertainment as it served as a world to play whatever kind of games you want in rather than being a game in itself.

Pic related is how far I have gotten in it: Pathfinding, eating apples when hungry and harvesting apples when not hungry. I have all the systems planned out already, but I have clinical trouble finding things so roughly 99.9% of my time has gone on googling for libraries, googling how to use those libraries, and googling why they aren't working. I could provide pseudocode design documents for the whole thing, but for the actual coding we need someone who isn't as crippled at it as I am.

Unfortunately it seems finding programmers is even more difficult than finding animators, so without finding someone to help the game project isn't getting anywhere on my strength alone.

I spent the last night thinking about the main character and the story to tie it all together, so here's some quick thoughts on that:

Dingbat (maybe even a bat pony?) is a writer who lives by the rule "understand before you judge". She's hesitant about saying anything about topics she doesn't understand, and always tries to hear both sides of an argument. She tries to be polite but sometimes inadvertently comes out as inquisitive when she can't take "just because" as an answer. Her cutiemark is a book with a cherkmark on its cover, to symbolize her strive for objectivity.

The story begins as Dingbat arrives in the new town looking to write a book about his life there. He has bought an old house that has been abandoned for a while, since the locals believe it to be haunted. The pony who sold the house never mentioned that, but Dingbat is skeptical about such stories anyway.

Right away she gets to meet the mailpony, who's supposed to help her move her stuff to the house. She doesn't seem to be taking her job too seriously, but eventually Dingbat reluctantly agrees to leave her luggage and moving crates in her care as she heads out to check out her new house.

As she gets to her new house, all her stuff is already in the house, with the mailpony relaxing in a hammock, sipping a drink from a coconut. When she notices Dingbat, she lazily puts down her drink and asks her to sign the papers before zipping away. Dingbat inspects the house, sees what furniture it needs (at least a bed, bookcase, writing table and a chair), and notices some strange noises coming from the walls. She gives a thought to the ghost theory, but thinks that some kind of vermin is more likely and moves out to find a furniture shop.

Instead of getting to a shop she was looking for, she notices the rustic store of the carpenter pony, and decides to see what kind of furniture she has to offer. The carpenter asks Dingbat a lot of questions about stuff like favorite color, favorite book, what time she goes to sleep and gets up, until Dingbat starts to get weirded out by this. Eventually the carpenter says she knows wha to do, and as Dingbat casually mentions her suspicions about pests in her walls, the carpenter tells her that if she has any problems with animals, she should seek out the nature pony.

In short, she meets the main cast, each referencing her to a pony she should go see next. As she gets home in the evening, she finds that his house is now gorgerously personalized like pony houses tend to be, with the carpenter pony telling that she did her best with the information she had. The mailpony is there since she helped carry the stuff there, the nature pony arrives to check the alledged vermin infestation, the magic pony comes to check the possible magical influences, so generally all of the ponies are in the same room at the same time. That's when the ancient secret hidden inside the old house gets revealed, and the plot proper kicks off in the next episode.

Interesting idea. I like it, but can you try introducing some characters together? I felt like the show made for a slow introduction meeting each character separately. Not all the characters need to be introduced in pairs or anything, just some to show there is some level of interaction at the least between the residents. In my opinion it will make the world seem a bit more natural as most often you don’t just run into people by themselves when you meet them for the first time, especially when they are working. You may even try adding background characters to the introduction, even if they only wave then walk off, it will make the world a bit more believable.

In short, try some new, creative ways to introduce a few characters as not to both appear as a simple ripoff of the show and to grab attention of the audience. Not all introductions need to be unique, but a few may make your idea much more appealing.

Some recent thoughts on the show:
The nature pony should be an earth pony after all. An earth pony being down to earth makes sense already, it would have her running instead of flying around, and it would be a nice little detail to have her use her tail like Indiana Jones uses the whip. Not too often as that would make her appear as some kind of strange tentacle pony, but it would be nice in the same way ponies sometimes use their tails to wipe dust from things. Her cutiemark should be a pair of binoculars with band-aid on them, symbolizing her skill in finding and getting to those who need her help.

The appearance definitely needs to be redone from the ground up, as something more natural would definitely suit her better. My thoughts keep looping back to a mix between Applejack and Tempest Shadow, which isn't helped by the fact that last night I saw a dream about her looking exactly like that. Also, my display appears to be dying which makes my work with colors inherently skewed, so if anyone has plans or concepts for ponies that would be nice.

The logging planner pony could probably use some personalizing too, but even more so I'm starting to think she might be better off as a background pony. Meanwhile, we don't yet have any kind of civilized pony in the group, so maybe a theater actor or a dancer could work. Singer would bring a lot of trouble in the form of needing unique songs to perform in a show that's already bound to have songs in it, Rarity already did the fashionista angle, and the carpenter pony is the general craftspony of the group. A painter is definitely a possibility too, but that has a big risk of backfiring if she appeared to use her social skills for shilling her art instead of just being good. This concept still needs a lot of work, so ideas are once again welcome.

There's definitely going to be background ponies, as the town would look dead without any other characters. Not sure about introducing more than one main character at a time as that might make some seem more important than others while clumping others together, but we'll see once we get everything else planned out.

Now back to festivities. Merry Christmas everybody!

I see your concerns. My idea may not work as I have no experience making a show anyway. I just personally think the characters can be made important through a good introduction even when they are in groups. But go with your gut feeling and things will fall in place. Merry Christmas!

Remember, what these new characters really need… is a good dynamic between each one.

Loathe as I am to use tvtropes, I remember a good page on it here. I hope it hasn't had that part edited out…

I can't find it, but there was a big section on how every MLPFIM main cast member contrasted with others, had things in common with others, and clashed with others. Not only was each girl "A different way one could be a woman positively", both in intention and in reality, but each girl was also unique and loveable in their own right while still falling into the typical TV "Sporty one, smart one, cute one, fashion one" roles.

Posted too soon, but the "Sporty one, smart one, cute one, fashion one" roles are good because it allowed the show to (When it was made by people that cared) do the typical TV show episode others have done, giving it a point of familiarity… and allowing them to do these typical show episodes better.

Also, remember episode 3? Some might call it a step down from episodes 1 and 2, but I don't. It ended with the characters doing the smart obvious thing and getting more tickets, and it was a direct slap in the face to that old MLP episode from MLP Tales where they fought over tickets and decided nobody should go, so they instead sold the tickets for pizza money and watched the show on TV together.
