I have to admit I have been neglecting my duty keeping up to speed. I will on the other hand enjoy a comfy run-up to Christmas with a whole season to keep me entertained.

Pic related is my feelings on it. I liked it overall but it couldn't beat season 2 and 4.
Perfect Pear and Daring Done were my favorite episodes, the latter because it was the first time since Pinkie Pride and The Cuty Map that she was portrayed correctly and on theme even if it seemed like a RD episode.

For improvements I think it did well with going with more lore its questionable whether the improvements to the current lore were good or bad though but failed to do the mane six justice with important character interactions.

I put it at third worst season, just ahead of season 3, which is just ahead of season 6. It wasn't really bad, just meh. Had a few standout episodes that made it worth while though, kinda like season 3.

glimmer episode face becau….png
The worst season of MLP to date.

It was bad, painfully so. It really felt like the writers were phoning it in.

These new writers have no love for the main six or the source material they're writing shitty fanfiction for, and their OCs(Discord, Sunburst, Glimmer, Trixie, Thorax) are hilariously bland and shallow. Their use of Starswirl should have been interesting, but it instead felt like cheap pandering gone wrong. The heart just isn't there any more.

It could have been improved by chucking out Miller, Vogel, and Haber and replacing them all with people willing to throw episodes in the bin and say "Now give me your second idea, and make it better than the first shitty thing that popped into your heads". Also, less Glimshilling. If you want to "Redeem" her, give her a redemption arc to put Zuko's to shame. She didn't get caught pissing in the fountain, she raped the timeline and created world after world of suffering and death just because her crush moved on with his life and she didn't. I don't care if they "Reveal" she "Actually" had a traumatic past involving parental neglect and cutie marks, her reaction was unjustified, her power level is unjustifiable, and her existence outside of prison is unjust.

Overall I was quite happy with it. Maybe this is just the perspective of someone who hasn't been on the ride that long, but I don't quite get all the negativity about this season and the movie; I thought both were a lot of fun. A couple of episodes were boring but there's been at least a couple in every season I've seen.

I'll agree that the writers sometimes give the impression that they're not really taking their job all that seriously. The show could probably use some fresh talent. Beyond that though I have absolutely no major problems with it and don't see any reason why the show couldn't go on for several more seasons.

Still, Mister Ed has better writing than a lot of later MLP episodes, and it was a show that didn't take itself seriously at all. Speaking of which, is there a Mister Ed OC?

There are many reasons fans hate the show at the moment, but I hypothesize it all comes from the same root issue. That root issue being that the series squandered the potential MLP had. Back in the beginning of the fandom there was a lot of possibility. Equestria was a massive, wide fantasy land with unlimited possibility. There were magical racies, unexplored lands, monsters, and mysteries to be solved. This possibility was multiplied by the stories woven by fan fiction writers, who further pushed the boundaries of what if. There was also a large, colorful cast of reoccurring characters that were all genuinely likable in their own special ways. Their actions, speeches, and motivations were so good, many became invested in these characters. People wanted to see more of them, and artists obliged them. The land of Equestria the cartoon showed had so much inspiration to draw from art, music, and fan fiction flooded the internet. There was always new media that was fresh, new, and pony to consume. Everything became pony, and for a time it didn’t seam like the creativity had an end.

What happened to it all? Hasjew. Hasjew brought down the hammer on fan made content. Their effort to sell toys with Princess Twilight split the fanbase. Content creators left for greener pastures. The MLP fandom that had so much life was being strangled. There was still the possibility of recovery, but Hasjew fucked it up. They failed to pivot the show correctly to make Princess Twilight work. They got rid of the elements, and kept straying away from the foundations of the show. They made the world more square, and started cutting off the ambiguity that fueled imagination. Then they royally fucked everything up by solving the characters, and making them flater. Twilight is now a pretty Princess, no more science and books. Rarity fulfilled her dreams of owning a shop in Canterlot. Flutershy is more assertive (kind of, depending on the script). Rainbow Dash is a wonderbolt. Applejack never had ambitions, so she just works the farm. She’s just the know nothing farmer now. Pinkie is also in the same boat with AJ in terms of having no other ambitions besides fun. She is now just the lol so random comedy relief. Hell, they gave the CMC their tramp stamps without even progressing them as characters. They’re still in that silly little red school house, learning about something irrelevant and not fun for the audiance. The show is now a mess.

Hasjew’s answer to their own fuck ups? They made GlimGlam the star. She could be a good character if done right, but of course they didn’t. The little commie is a failed attempt to revitalize the show, hence why she is called Poochie.

If you like the show as it is now good for you. I wish I could enjoy it. All I can see is a twisted mockery of a show eating the remains of what could have been.

I'm new to the fandom so I haven't seen the decay like you have still a its very clear its going through an identiy crisis. MLP's main theme at the start was Harmony, finding a balance between what makes good friends. The main six were there to represent the ideal characteristics of a grill and how she acts. Some are book nerds like Twi, some are graceful like Flutters, some athletic, family bound, crazy, preppy. They took away the elements in season 4 and all but ditched them by 5 in every way possible. The world began to shrink, it became less of a romantic setting and more of a modern setting, going from dark evil mysterious woods to lel lets take a camping trip into it.

And on top of all of it they've been diminishing the importance of events past. Season 4 starts we right off the bat get to see the fight between Luna and Celstia. No epic combat with massive armies, no one dies no huge war. Nothing but a small fight where Celstia just throws her sister to the moon for 1000 years. Why? Because fuck her and we had to do something right? Oh and while were at it lets make there a fucking tree as to where the elements came from. Now the tree was planted by the 6 oldfags, welp guess Luna and Celestias royal asses have again become weaker then every other fucking thing that comes into the show. Why the hell are they in charge if they can't even protect themselves and need their 1000+ old school teacher to do 75% of the work in protecting the realm?

Like you've said the lose corners have been filled in, they've played it so safe that they've pretty much only brought back old, familiar materiel and when they go out of Equestria like in the movie it feels like the new writers don't have any idea what the world should be. But like I've said I started the ride when the merge happened, so I haven't been around long enough to make a longterm judgement. Things looked great and now feel very different.

maybe this is still just a newfag/casual way of looking at it, but it might just be that your expectations were too high to begin with and you would have ended up disappointed either way. any creative property that starts off strong is better in the beginning when there's limitless potential than it is after seven seasons when the world has pretty much been fleshed out for better or for worse. I agree with you on some of your technical points and I'm not a huge fan of Glimmer or the sloppily-ended story arcs either, but I don't know; I guess I just see it as a cute children's cartoon made to sell toys that someone put enough work into to actually make it a decent show. The jokes are funny, the stories are usually entertaining enough, and there's some decent moral lessons slipped in there alongside the obvious toy commercials. I just sort of watch it and imagine that if I ever end up with kids of my own, this is the kind of thing I would be okay with them watching. I could actually sit down and watch MLP with them and enjoy it myself, rather than suffering through "Barbie's Adventures in Niggerland" or some shit like that and wondering what kind of subliminal messages the kikes are trying to feed my kids. I guess I didn't exactly come into this show expecting it to be the Lord of the Rings or anything.

>they got rid of the elements, everyone's story arcs are done, Glimmer is the star

This, this, this. It's clear that Lauren still had plans when she left that have since been contradicted, and things have gotten so different that it almost feels like a different show. I'd love to know what could have been. At the very least, things have been dragging on due to everyone's arcs being completed. In my opinion, the best thing they could have done from a creative standpoint was wait until the end of the series to make Twilight a princess, make Rainbow Dash a Wonderbolt, etc, and pull a Seinfeld by ending the series while everyone had fond memories of it instead of slowly degrading it into their own Spongebob/Fairly Oddparents. Then when they started gen 5, they could introduce brand new characters in a new world instead of reworking existing characters and taking the magic out of the unknown parts of Equestria. But that's just my two cents.

>it might just be that your expectations were too high to begin with
I started watching expecting nothing and I ended up watching a great show till something happened along the way and Lauren Faust dropped off.
I remember some bronies fearing the show would not be the same afther that and some claiming that Lauren had previously planned some episodes ahead so it should be ok.
And now we are here and the fandom is almost completely dead, and no one knows who to blame, and people claim the end is neigh..
Really that must be a huge flag about something changing drastically.
The show should have ended long ago, it's just sad to see what it's becoming of it, most bronies defend it by saying now the animation is great, but what's the point of great looks if it's a corpse anyways.

Also I remember Faust always delivering good shows man, just look at PPG or foster mansion.

You said it. You said it so well, I don't think there's anything I can add on top of that. It's kinda telling that the "You all just had your expectations too high!" people in this thread are saying that unironically but I don't want to bring that up.

I guess I could add some stuff about Glimmer.

While she was designed to be a total Poochie from the start, one-shotting Twilight one day and then fighting Twilight Sparkle to a standstill multiple times a day next time they see each other, I find her later treatment even more insulting.

The writers realized there was nothing they could do with this flat, boring, shitty character or her bullshit power level. So they gave her a friend to bounce off. They brought back Trixie "Because she needed redemption too!", and gave her a fellow asshole to reminisce about her asshole days with. That's what Trixie's been flanderized into. The potential she had is gone, because now she's just the main character's "Foil", the best friend who exists to make the hero look cooler and better and more heroic. They could have introduced an OC, but they brought back Trixie and forced her into this role, in an era where writers were phoning in lazy stock plots and forcing characters into the roles, even if they didn't fit in those roles without acting OOC.

Then, the Changelings. Fans liked the Changelings, right? So they "Redeem the changelings" by giving GMPC Thorax a deus ex machina heart-beam the entire race could have used at any time, shooting their original concept in the foot again and again just so the nu-Changelings could be used as a "Metaphor" for how you should "Just accept change" even if it's a stupid change "because there's no such thing amirite lads?". Thorax is now a stag beetle gradient-coloured eyesore, as are so many other Changelings.

What made the original Changeling OCs popular? Their looks. Their looks, and the fact that they come with personalities and backstories built-in. Stop me if you've heard this one before: Buggy the Changeling was a Changeling until he decided to turn good and go to Ponyville, hoping to be accepted for revealing what he is. Yes, that symbolism was a big part of it, too.

This? This retroactively invalidates every Changeling OC possible while replacing their "Cool evil" factor with a dumb "Another good race in a sugar bowl with no stakes and nothing to do" problem.

And who handles the new Changeling problems? Not Thorax, he's a plot device. Glimmer handles the Changeling problems, because she needs to have plots dropped in her lap.

And then, Maud is brought back. Because EEEEVERYONE FUCKING LOVES MAUD. A dumb OC that was only funny once, and only funny because ponies were trying and failing to relate to and befriend this stereotype? Lol, let's give her new episodes and more screentime because pandering to the newfags with low-effort trash (They don't expect or want any better, probably because either self-esteem problems or they weren't around when the show was unironically good) is so much easier than trying hard and writing good stories!

And then Maud is brought back, JUST to be made into Glimmer's friend. They try to shift some of Glimmer's blame onto Maud, then Pinkie suddenly not knowing her own sister or friendship is enough to ruin the friendship between Glimmer and Maud, causing Glimmer to flatly state what Pinkie's been turned into by the writers that just don't fucking have the guts to let Poochie be wrong, or challenge her, or even make her have to try. Poochie gets to laze around and be shilled while Twilight forces friendship lessons onto her like a sapient forcing human interaction sessions on his retarded whiny selfish bratty bitchy emo shut-in cousin.

The new writers want you to like Poochie more than they want to tell a good story involving Poochie. They want their OCs, like Poochie and Sunburst and nu-Discord, to keep you watching this show. They want you to love THEIR characters like you once loved FAUST'S characters.

The modern show is a pit filled with laziness, ego, and shit.

Agreed, it's totally different from what Faust had envisioned. Dawn Somewhere has done good videos on how FiM messed up its character development and why reforming every character so early (ESPECIALLY Discord; making a literal god of chaos and then normalizing him is like cutting off your arm) takes away any tension or adventure the show has. It doesn't matter how great a villain you create if you destroy his very character after a season.

Would FiM be less lazy and egotistical if they relied more on regular writers and less on guest writers? It would definitely be more consistent.

Personally I thought the show was getting better and better (my favorite seasons being 2 and 5), until season 6, when the show took a nose dive.

The thing that bothers me the most is that the writers don't seem to respect the viewers intelligence anymore. While you might have some exposition in the first seasons they still left a lot of the plot and lore to the imagination. This made for some great mysteries and surprises that kept me wanting more.

Season 6 onward was just so leaden with exposition and explanations that it sucks the fun out of the episodes. This led to most episodes being completely forgettable or downright frustrating.

The Season 7 premiere, where they spend the entire episode fretting over what to do with Poochie (a glimpse behind the scenes, perhaps?) was probably the most infuriating episode I've ever seen. Not only does Twilight come up with scenarios of where Poochie could go, but she also explains what she'd do, then also shows what would happen. Most of the episode is completely unnecessary and just feels like filler. Then Celestia tells, AND SHOWS, her story explaining why she sent Twilight away which not only breaks continuity but is, again, completely unnecessary. When the end of the episode rolled around I was hopeful that this headache of an episode would at least be a jumping off point for Starlight, and she might leave the Mane Six to start her own journey. I actually enjoyed some episodes that were just about her and thought that the occasional Starlight episode, away from the Mane Six, might be better than trying to shoehorn her into the plot of every episode. Then, in the end, NOTHING HAPPENEND!!! The entire episode was a complete waste of time and potential! Previous season premieres and finales weren't afraid to change up the status quo, and if they were ever going to fix the problems with Starlight Glimmer this would be the perfect episode. But nothing was changed! If it weren't for my obsessive compulsive need to finish the series I'd have quit watching MLP right there.

It was also painful to watch as they destroyed the Changelings by removing their mystique and making them the fruitiest creatures in Equestria. The idea that they just don't need to consume love is stupid as well, otherwise why would they do it at all? They should've tied it to their shape-shifting ability so that there'd be at least a consequence to them choosing not to feed on ponies anymore.

It's depressing to see what the show has turned into, now that all the good writers have left. I don't think there are more than a handful of episodes in the last two seasons worth rewatching.

Kinda late…

>>90791
This is my problem with it, honestly. Nothing changed. The elements are still around, somehow, and there's a bunch more background characters to be trapped by Chrysalis whenever she gets back. The dynamic will not change (at least not like previously). I hope I'm wrong…

Everything in season 7 seemed to drag on for far too long, with little to no progression associated. Character interactions are too self centered (how many times did the mane 6 talk to each other in the finale?), which makes the show feel alot shallower than it is. Every problem feels very avoidable and lackluster.

Then again, this might be because I've lost the sense of wonder I had of the show, when I first started watching it. Everything feels very familiar, and monotony breeds boredom.
I have still the movie to watch, AMD I've heard it's good, so there's that at least…

>Nothing changed.
I'd say this is the number one problem with keeping MLP a slice of life type of show. We know equestrian so well at this point and like the entire episode showed there are nearly no dark places left in the land. The world is all magical princess wonderland where everything is perfect besides a few character interactions gone wrong, but because the villains keep getting reformed all the potential bad that could exist becomes smaller and smaller. The MLP universe has lost its spark of magic because of this. It would have been better off if they kept the outside world more romatic ane less industrial so that we could have more to explore and learn about with new villains and adventures rather then rushed feeling adventures or the constant need to explain everything that has happened in the past and make it less impressive.
