I feel ready. I have read the majority of the combat section in the Player's Handbook. But even the book says that the best way to truly learn these rules is to play and go back to check when needed on the rules in the book.
This is simple game, with simple things happening to simple ponies and simple players (you). This is my first time dming, if there is an intrest that is, so I appriciate anyone correcting me on the rules as we go along. However, I might still not use them at times because I might disagree with the rules in those specific situations. I don't know yet it's about context.
So here's the simple gist of this small adventure (2-3 sessions).
Daring Doo the epic adventurer has return from another tressure hunt with a broken leg. Drats! She who just figured out the location of the extremly valuable artifact the Obsidian Mouse. Double drats! The criminal Meowster has also learnt of this location and is on his way there now. Who will Daring Doo turn to in this hour of need? Well a ragtag team of newbie adventures with big ambitions, you!
The special homebrew rule for this one-shot is that we're doing the 5e thing were we don't need to confirm our critical hits with another roll against AC.
As I said before, I'm just dipping my feet into this dming stuff. I hope we can have some fun together anyway.
Well, if you feel up for it please inform me by just posting it in this thread. I had a time in mind, which is about six hours from now but not a date (10.00 pm CDT). But that time might not suit everyone so let's just discuss it here which times and dates that fits people the best.
Otherwise, this a level one adventure so feel free to create a level 1 character. Feel free to ask any questions regarding anything.
Wow, another game on /mlpol/.
May I ask, what are your guidelines and recommendations for character creation? Any boundaries you'd like to establish?
Also the description of the story implies this is a game that takes place in a pony setting. What do you use for pony races?
>>150337>what are your guidelines and recommendations for character creation? Any boundaries you'd like to establish? You can use the starting equipment section in the dm's guide or the players guide or wherever it is. But Honestly, you're free bring in any ideas for a character build even like homebrew classes just so long that you show them to me beforehand. I want to be able to modify them so they aren't too powerful and I also like to know what they can do.
>What do you use for pony races?Anything is fine. You can play is a human Anonymous, to a breeze, or a pony. Though, there are certain exceptions but I think the best approach is to ask first. I might allow it with some modifications. Like, no I won't let anyone play as a beholder but maybe you can be something smaller and similar and also nerfed?
But this is set in the ponyverse so yes, ponies would be the most fitting for the setting, I think.
Everything will be done in thread. Combat as well. I'll post battle grids like pic and through using coordinate systems I'll explain your relationship between your characters and the enemies.
>>150339I was wondering if you had any particular stats you wanted to use for ponies in this game.
If not, maybe I could just use the races from Ponyfinder?
>>150340I have no particular stats I want to use for this adventure. If you certain stats for races that you think are cool and good, you can post them here. I'll go through them and maybe I like them too. We could definitely use those stats if they are appealing to me. Nobody in this thread should feel afraid of presenting a perspective.
>>150341As for characters, would you accept any alignment?
>>150342Sorry, but they have to be heroes in this adventure. So at least good. So Lawful Good, Neutral Good, or Chaotic Good.
I guess I can accept more neutral to good characters or straight up neutral if there is reasons for those neutral characters to behave like heroes. Like, maybe one character in the party is neutral or everyone but one but those pcs really love that pc in character so they put up with being heroes.
Yeah, so this is one of those points that I'm bit of a stick in the mud. >>150343Maybe after this adventure I'll allow all alignments in my adventure but right now I stay away from evil. However, if you have an intresting character concept, then bring it up. Maybe it can work with some modifications, you don't know if you don't try.
>>150343Alright, so that rules out my chaotic evil, misanthropic, omnicidal, sadistic, nihilistic Dread Necromancer of Atropus.
I'll see what I can cook up. I might refluff an old character like my Druid or Champion.
>>150346>Necrodancer Spoopy SkellingtonSadly so. Unless, you can make him good somehow. Perhaps have him reformed by Flutters or something.
>I'll see what I can cook up.I'm happy to hear that.
>>150348<Necrodancer Spoopy SkellingtonOne day I maybe I'll be good at bants.
I think I might want to do a Factotum dungeon delver.
It'll depend on the point buy number though, since factotum relies on a lot of stats.
>>150352Mm, yeah. We're going with the point buy system. If you want randomness, then roll and see if you can make the same scores in this point buy
http://www.propelled.de/extern/chargen You have 24 points. Arrange it in whatever way you want in this point buy. Yes, you can go with a barbarian with 18 in str and 15 con and 8 in the rest.
I totally forgot about this. kek, "which stats to we get?" "You don't.">Factotum dungeon delverWhat is that?
>>150357As in you roll for randomness and then see if the you can make the same scores in this point buy without passing 24 points total.
>>150358Hmmm, 24 isn't that high for a Factotum. I might prefer to do a single-stat spellcaster or Dragonfire Adept.
Pardon my inactivity. I've been busy with other things. If you could post any other guidelines or details you come up with, that would be appreciated.
>>150357>What is that?It's a jack-of-all-trades class from dungeonscape.
>>150401Oh, I see.
>>150391>guidelines or detailsThere's not much than what is already stated tbh but some trivia: I'll try to split the sessions into 50/50 roleplay/combat.
The pcs will level up like crazy. I want to practice combat on different levels so the pcs will basically go up a level after each encounter.
I thought about revealing that while playing as a surprise but I don't know maybe that would been fun maybe it was better if you knew ahead of time.So there will be about 9-10 encounters so expect to grow to level ten or just below.
>>150406Oh, cool. So this could be a long-term thing. I hope we get more players on board soon.
>>150407>So this could be a long-term thing.Well, if you mean in terms of my GMing, then yes, I'd like to gm more games after this one but the adventure itself isn't very long.
But I'm pretty sure are communication is solid, here.>I hope we get more players on board soon.I hope so too. But I don't blame them. I have a history of abandoning projects so they might not have trust in my capabilities.
Or there is some other reason. Btw, the adventure is a bit of placeholder adventure, as in it's not suppose to feel like a videogame with a killquest, "Go here, kill mobs, return." Things have their explaination for why they are in the world in the first place. Having said that, it's bare minimum. To me, this is test campaign. That's why we have silly names for things like,
>the extremly valuable artifact the Obsidian Mouse Don't know what that artifect is and what it does yet, tbh. Have only focused on the first three encounters the players will face. Will literally wing lore details. So I guess 50/50 roleplay/combat is probably wrong; 25/75 is probably more accurate. 50/50 is where I want my gming to be like in a future campaign.
When I say encounters, I'm soley talking about fights not puzzles so that might be helpful too.
>>150407I would actually be willing to just play with you until right before the second encounter. That might help people see that this is happening. After that I kinda want a party. To me, that's one of the major appeals in dnd. We can all have different opinions but I think interaction between pcs is one of the high points of the game.
>>150427>I would actually be willing to just play with you until right before the second encounter. As in, your pc is temporary the entire party and you fight the first fight in the adventure but not the second.
>>150427>We can all have different opinions but I think interaction between pcs is one of the high points of the game.>WeI'm not talking about (you) nor anyone specific.
I'd be interested in playing possibly.
When would you wanna play?
>>150435Makes me pretty happy.
I have different times in mind. I can be quite flexible so it depends more on your guys. Can you play this weekend? Sweden is 7 hours ahead of texas (CDT) so either it's sometime during the afternoon or during the evening for me. Early early in the morning, when most of you haven't gone to bed yet, works for me as well most of the time but it doesn't right now due to my current routine. The weekend is free for most people so some of those days might be candidates for dates.
An advice that I have realize is to make characters that you put more focus on the mechnics of the character's build rather than his/hers personality and backstory. You can do whatever you want of course, but this is intended as a simple and small adventure so creating a deep and intresting character for this adventure might be a bit like throwing pearls to swines, (or swine in this case).
>>150440Some ground rules for racial mechanics would really be appreciated, tbh. I guess I could just use Ponyfinder stats though.
Anyway, I'll work on my character(s). The game I'm in will be done in 2-3 weeks, so I'll have my weekends clear by then.
>>150428I don't follow.
>>150445>racial mechanics would really be appreciatedOkay, will return with something like that.
>The game I'm in will be done in 2-3 weeks, so I'll have my weekends clear by then.>Anyway, I'll work on my character(s).Hmm, tbh, I'm afraid you might overcraft your character. I intended this adventure to be a tad longer than a one-shot. This is partly practice for the next adventure which I will put more effort into the world than this one. I have an adventure called, "The Champions of Jagged Bay".
If you can't play until like three weeks then maybe you want to build for that campaign instead?
I just don't want you to put your precious time into crafting an intresting character for a simple adventure like this one.
I should have included this in the OP and been more clear so it's my fault if there is a misunderstanding but kinda just wanted the players to throw together some characters and play when we all had a common hole in our schedule.
>I don't follow.Since
>>150435 is here now it no longer applies but I thought just you and I could play the first encounter and perhaps that would make others wanna join.
>>150445Sorry, it seems I'm repeating myself. But yeah, your thoughts?
>>150440>>150450 >>150451I DM on Saturdays, so I can't do that.
I would be interested in playing your next game, if I can't do this one.
Btw, I'm actually the same guy with the black ID. Idk why it changed.
Well, I have character concepts, new and old, that I would be willing to play.
If we can settle on a date, I can write up my sheet.
>>150465Had started a reply to this post
>>150452 which I assume is yours?
But yeah, we can try to decide on a date and time when all of us
>>150435 have time.
I can throw out some times and dates to see which works for you guys. You said saturday doesn't work. Does that mean the whole weekend doesn't work otherwise I can do on friday.
>>150467I could try to do late nights on Saturday, but 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM EST is off limits for the next two weeks, since DMing consumes most of my day.
>>150467>>150468I can be flexible though, depending on what the rest of the party is doing.
>>150468>>150469Okay, let me think a little.
>>150474I should be able to come up with some time and date that fits us all.
So are we still doing this or what?
>>150730Yeah, I still want to do this. We need to figure out a good time for everyone. Otherwise, the first session's concept is done. I need to look in to the nuts and bolts of the encounters but due to their simple nature, I can't imagine that to be difficult or take that much time.
inb4 I realize how extremly difficult it actually is. >>150730I have read about some of the rules about flight combat and realized that some of the encounters will totally break with flight. So, if you could, please avoid playing something that can fly. In future games, I'll figure out how to deal with it but right now it's a bit too much.
>>150730How about tomorrow or the day after that, a few hours earlier than the current time?
>>150758Sorry, Anon. I was busy all day yesterday and I didn't see this post. Are we still doing this?
Can we do anytime this week.
Also, I have to build a sheet. I think I will just refluff my old Druid, since that's the easiest thing to do.
>>150954>>150952These guys are both me, btw.
So far one other Anon has said he's interested, I think.
>>150955Yeah, I think so too. Do you have time in about three hours? I can actually prepare the first session till then.
If you're okay with being solo since well, there's no telling if anyone else will join us.
I'll write out the first scene so you know what you have to work with.
Duke Cold Steel visited the small town of Marshlilies a week ago during a family reunion for an earth pony family named, Log Hunter. Being in the Marshlilies at the time, you checked out the festivities. You bet and lost money against an older-timer on the aligator rodeo. You came second in the "chubby bunny" contest but with somewhat poisionous fungi. You bought two strawberry jam colored bottles of healing for 2d8s. You saw a filly looking pleadingly at a window display with lollipops and you bought her one. In return, you got to caress that wonderfully soft mane.
It was a big deal that the Duke had acknowledge his heritage from his mother side to the town and so he was kinda the main attraction. He was suppose to hold a speech. A large crowd of happy earth ponies had gathered around the podium he stood at. He began his speech by talking about his mother and how her peculiar ways of mannerisms. The townspones both laughed and cheered since it was so clear that she had grown up in the town. As he began to talk about how his father and his mother meet and why it took him so long to reconnect with his mother's home town, you notice something odd.
You stood furthest out in the crowd because as an outsider, you didn't wanna take up spots from the natives. This also meant you could move more freely. You noticed: An earth pony. Of course, an earth pony in a town full of them wasn't odd but his cutiemark was. It wasn't one about cooking mushrooms or chopping wood, or even aligators in a headstall. No, he had a knife with a slithering blade and bloodied tip. He was walking around the crowd and seemed to sneak in the direction of the podium.
At first you, your hooves froze but then they began to move. Being pupperteered by you're own conciousness, you trail him. Was he really going to attack the Duke out in the open? No, he wasn't but he used his weight and strength to shove some of the audience like dominos so another could get a clear shot. You saw a bolt of arcane energy fly through the dusk air. One moment you were running toward the Duke, the next you had shoved him out of harms way as the magic missile shattered a couple of boards behind him.
The attackers had escaped but the Duke had been greatful to you for saving him. You'd be rewarded well if you came to his mansion in Canterlot. The townspones also celebrated your deed. You thought you'd travel with the Duke to Canterlot to catch in on that reward but before that you got a letter from the legendary adventurer, Daring Doo. She had heard about your heroic deed and wanted your help. You thought, if you really were suppose to be a hero then how could you to deny a call for aid?
Now you have been traveling for three days, following the directions given to you in the letter. You were suppose to find her in a house near yet still away from the harbour town, Roughwaters.
Now you think you have found it. In front of you is a field of nothing but grass and some bushes adjecent to a bay of ocean waters. Near these waters stands a single but three stories high house.
You are about to walk inside the field as you notice something, precisely where the forest you're in ends and the field begins, a line of mushrooms has grown.
Pardon me, I just got off of work.
Let me cook up a Mythweavers sheet.
>>150969To be honest, I haven't really been super focused on finishing the first encounter yet. It shouldn't be too hard. Hmmm. I'll try to finish it. Give me half an hour and I'll return with confirmation if I can do this. I think so but I'd just gotta make sure.
>>150969I gotta this. I'm kinda nervous but I have finished my preperations for the first two encounters now. Not the third and the second could use some polishing but I think I'll manage till we get there.
I'm just nervous.
So I'm ready whenever you are.
>>150970>>150973Take you time. I haven't even made my character yet.
>>150974Thanks. Then I can put more details into things.
>>150974Basically, I have enough for it to fly but there are still things that could be worked on, especially the more I think about it, more and more questions pop up.
>>150975>>150976I was just wondering if other players were wanting to participate.
>>151005The other guy hasn't written anything again so it doesn't seem like that, sadly.
Is this going to be a thing, or not?
>>152351Probably not. Only you cared
And some guy who only showed up once.. Not that I'm blaming anyone, I wouldn't have too much faith in myself either.
>>152386Tbh, it would have been better if you'd given Anons pony racial stats, instead of making them find them themselves.
I'm still down for it whenever you'd like to play, or if you'd ever want to play or run something else. I could even solo it if it's doable.
>>152390>I could even solo it if it's doable.Well, not right now I'm afraid. Too busy at the moment but thanks for your support in this.
Any chance we could try to ressurrect this some time in the future?
