While the wider conflict bears some importance to the pol-sphere, the political side of things ought much more attention than it was given.

While "whataboutism" avoids facing the argument directly and does not disprove it. The fact of the matter is that a weltanschauung cannot contradict itself. Tankies would constantly rearrange their stances to better face a given point of contention. Subsequently abusing this term whenever the inevitable inconsistencies were pointed out.
In an amazing example of an utter failure to "Make the enemy live up to its own book of rules." or rather, a complete refusal to try it. Wehraboos have been nearly wiped off the internet.

That FIM episode with the Tantabus wasn't exactly the best FIM episode ever.
It could have used more time in the oven.
And the sheer bluntless of the way Luna unnaturally says "I made the Tantabus to torture myself" makes this typical "This monster of the week is actually my guilt/fear/self-loathing/inner darkness/denial/other repressed feelings" trope seem more like something stupid and abusive Luna did to herself for no real reason.
Countless cartoons pulled this trope off better. Even Teen Titans from 2003, a show the voice actress of Twilight Sparkle worked on! In one episode, Raven doesn't want to watch a horror movie and denies they scare her. Then she loses control of her dark magic powers, and dark magic starts scaring her and hurting her friends. She has to confront her feelings to regain control of them.
But when Luna just says "I made this monster to hurt myself" it sounds like an alcoholic yelling "I drink a lot because my wife was killed by a drunk driver!". It sounds awkward. You can't just make characters tell you how they feel, that makes me feel angry! It sounds like something somebody working on the show would say to sum up the episode, not something Luna herself would say.
