But the area was largely uninhabited when it was a part of the Ottoman Empire. When Jews and Arabs started moving there after the British seized the area, they were able to coexist with one another with only a few minor scuffles that have since become blips on the historical radar. Israel is a state that is at least 110 years in the making and the international community agreed to recognize a Jewish state in Palestine during a time when colonialist empires dominated much of the planet’s surface area.
