I get that they reuse the names and designs, but generally from what I understand they try to create unique characters for each generation that just have elements from the previous gen characters. In this case they're just taking the exact same six characters, with the same basic colors and designs, and trying to make new characters out of them. It's like a reboot but not a reboot, and it frankly doesn't make a whole lot of sense. These new designs look too similar to the originals to be believable as new characters, people are going to be coming into this series immediately comparing these characters to their G4 counterparts. If they want to create a new show then they should create a new batch of ponies from scratch, or maybe recycle some old names that haven't been seen in a while, or build a new main group with different ponies from this gen. If they want to do a reboot then they should try to make the mane 6 resemble the previous mane 6 in terms of personalities and abilities. Honestly these redesigns just look like the kind of competent but shitty fan art you expect to see on DeviantArt or Tumblr, where the comments section is full of people saying things like "you can draw well but I don't like the style you chose" or "these are good but why does Pinkie Pie have wings?"

I'm beginning to wonder if they're not actually trying to sabotage the show and create something they know we're going to hate so we'll stop watching. The adult fandom was mostly an unexpected phenomenon and they're probably tired of having their work overanalyzed at this point. I get the impression most of the current creative team are pretty low-energy and don't really take what they're doing all that seriously. Lauren intended the show to also be for adults from the start (although she didn't expect the adult fanbase to get so big) and valued their criticism to the point where she did an AMA on /mlp/ after she left, and said point blank that she thought the board offered some of the best criticism. Meghan McCarthy was somewhere inbetween, where she clearly aimed parts of the show to the more dedicated adult fanbase but took the younger aspects less seriously (e.g. "every little girl wants to be a princess"). Now Jim Miller actively tries to avoid fan feedback and answers most criticism/questioning with "it's a cartoon, don't think about it".

Row six is the best looking one of the new designs. My tier list goes like this: 6,2,3,4,5. Just look at pinkie and twi on row 5. I also like (irony) the fact that applejack has an obnoxious look on her face on each row except for row 1 and 6. Either grinning beacuse she is so tough and has a badass girl image to keep up or as in row 5 she looks sceptical, like somekind of critic. (yeah, this migt be a projection on my part but I base it on their plans for the new applejack.)
Row 6 Applejack is smiling and I kind of like their designs, with the exception for rainbow dash (there is just too mush going on, I think). Now even if they took the row 6 they wouldn't be
able to write it well anyway but I do like that design. It kind of is like a more detailed version of the orignal, sort of.
Also not all of these designs have their cutie mark. Will they remove that part of the world?

It was never going to be good, the leaks just confirmed what many of us feared they would do. G4 is crashing and burning before their very eyes and there's very little they can do to salvage it, G5 is just an attempt to get people back on the train to spend money and advertise the franchise more. It'll turn out pretty much like the Clone Wars cartoon mixed with Steven Universe mixed with Big Mouth in a horrid abomination of liberal propaganda, corporate money grubbing and poorly realised attempts to be 'hip'.

The best way to make something like that work - which I would totally want to see, by the way - is to start off by cross-posting between all the alternatives, including this hypothetical new site, and constantly linking to all your off-site mirrors of your work, in what I call the Styx Approach.
Then, when enough of a userbase is doing this, embrace the Microsoft E³ strategy.
Embrace: Create a site that has all the features one could want from a FIMfic competitor.
Extend: Implement extended features: permitting >greentext, taking a strict free-speech approach, extending the umbrella to more fandoms, and more.

What I kind of have in mind is a generalized fiction/fanfiction site that caters to right-leaning viewpoints. It would allow users to either register a handle or post anonymously depending on preference, and would work in conjunction with most chan sites including this one. One feature I had envisioned is a thread-sync feature for green stories, where you give it a thread number and it automatically syncs updates to the story regardless of whether they're posted on the board or the site. For instance if you're writing a story in a thread you could go to the story page on the fiction site and give it the chan name and thread number, and it would automatically scrape updates from the thread and archive them on the site in case it 404s, you could also write updates on the site and they would post automatically to the thread. If you're referencing a non-existent thread maybe have it start a new one with the option of automatically posting all previous entries to save you the trouble of doing it. The auto-formatted threads would also contain a link to the site page so that the site would basically advertise itself as people use it. Some of this might not work as I'm not sure how practical it is having other sites post to chan sites, I suspect getting past bot protection and the like might be an issue. If it could be made to work though I think a lot of people would like it as it would be a good alternative to existing fanfiction sites and would allow authors to easily post stories to multiple locations.

Anyway that's the general idea I have, it's sort of in the planning stage right now.

In theory, the thread-syncing concept is a good one, but only from a thread to the site, and not the other way around: in that mode, it could leverage, say, a tripcode, to determine what qualifies as an update.
It's the whole 'pushing updates to the imageboard' part that seems really impractical. You're correct in that the bot protection is difficult to bypass, meaning that it likely wouldn't work on 4 or 8chan. On /mlpol/, you could probably talk with some devs to set up a kind of private-keyed API to make it work automagically like that, but again, it just sounds like more trouble than it's worth.
Now, using an /mlpol/ thread as a story's comment section, in the same manner that Disqus stands in for comment sections, I think would be a far more effective integration with an imageboard: it saves you having to code that separately, and just hands it off to a proven working medium.
As for story scraping, you should probably also implement a Pastebin scraper, kind of like the old Mulpwiki did (I'd attach the latest copy for reference, but it's a fuckhuge 350 MB RAR file)
