The rear portions of the SSRS Kostroma have been cleared. The Boiler room draws near. Still that sound persists. Calling them.

Either it's stuck, or the door is designed to need an upward force to open so as to make the door stronger against water pressure.

>>195167>>195166>>195165Inside of the ship, in black and white, Posey sees a large room with a network of steel pipes along the ceiling. Though the room may in size be comparable to a chapel, its architecture could scarcely be compared, for this room is packed and busy with so many metal mechanisms, pipes, and equipment. The room is dominated by a structure in the center, a large, partly open island of steel, with cylinders and mechanisms holding up a steel container. Beyond this, the walls tilt in. Above this level is steel railings, and a walkway looking over them from above.
Pardon, I fell asleep.
>>195168Posey enters the room fully. She checks the corners, the ceiling, and anywhere else a monster could hide, to make sure the room is safe for the engineering team to enter.
She walks slowly and deliberately, but not stealthily. She makes exaggerated movements so as to bait any remaining lurking to attack her.

smacks own flankShe also looks for any obvious signs that might indicate what damaged the boiler, or any smoke or other signs of damage.
She takes a readied full round action to draw her sword and attack whatever strikes her.
>>195172Posey walks out into the middle of the room, the only pony to do so. Posey can tell that one pony, presumably Stained Sand, has turned on a flashlight and is moving it about the room. Its cone of vision is not great in scope. If they were, in fact, attacked, Posey would fight alone. No one else can see.
Posey hears... Nothing. Not strictly nothing. There is a dull whistling, whining sound. She hears the shuffling, then the clopping of a hoof, again, presumably from Stained Sand, or possibly Cavaliere's claws. And always, always, that distant ringing.
>>195182Posey waits a few seconds to confirm that nothing is attacking, before she smiles
"The coast is clear! Bring in the repair crew. Giddy up now, we are almost through with this." Posey calls back
"It is as I suspected. The Intruder was unwilling or unable to conjure monsters in this shielded and crammed corridor: summons need adequate space and line of effect to manifest. The repair crew should be safe if we leave them here, so long as they shut the door behind them. This means we can safely marshal our forces to hunt down Light Water and destroy the Intruder combat without worry."
She brandishes her net and bolas
"~Time to go hippogriff hunting." she says, a giddy smile creeping onto her face
>>195183>>195182How many repair ponies do we have anyway?
>>195183Stained Sand shines the light of his flashlight directly onto Posey, potentially blinding her
"Hunt? I can't see shit. It's darker than the inside of a zebra nun's asshole in here."
Mala, quiet as always, says nothing. His padded paws make no sound on steel or wooden floors. He moves his flashlight around towards walls and in near-every direction, as if frantically looking.
Blackheel opens his mouth and takes a breath, evidently to make another speech. Then he closes his mouth and says nothing. If he has a flashlight, he is not using it and does not have it out.
>>195185For sure, Zara Zama. Possibly Partial View (of the Stalliongradians) and Wistful Wonder (of the pirates). Starfire and Patient Pipette are science crew and are also present. None of these characters have entered the room.
>>195188>metaphor"Peculiar choice of words. Do you speak from experience?" Posey remarks, her eyes glowing like those of a wolf in the shadows
Does Mala not have dark vision? I though he was a gnoll.
Posey moves towards the door to call the rest of the herd to bring the repair ponies in
"Hurry now. It should be safer in here than anywhere else on the ship."
She then proceeds to continue inspecting the boiler room.
"Any signs of major damage? Can the boiler be restarted?" she asks out loud
>>195188Cavaliere slips through the entryway, looking for some kind of chock to prop up the door with.
Search:
[1d20+4 = (15+4) = 19]"Look carefully before saying the coast is clear. It might never be clear in our case," he retorts.
>>195190I mean, if a 27 bluff doesn't provoke immediate attack, idk what would.
>>195191The same tactics that might work against a gang of rapists may not against an extraterrestrial foe. Cavaliere does not voice this openly, however.
"Sand, try not to blind us. Let's cover every corner of this room. Silver, Ms. Kirafiki, come on through," he calls out.
>>195192A monster would just attack anything that moves, wouldn't it?
>>195189Stained Sand stands there, still holding the flashlight on Posey
Gnolls in D&D are of demonic lineage. There is a reason that in 5.5 they were reclassified as fiends. The Kaftar and Crocutta "gnolls" of Occupied are gnolls only by analogy. Unlike the hyenas of EAW they are not even anthropomorphic and bipedal. They are basically Friendship is Magic hyenas. They presumably have low light vision but not true dark vision. And even if they did, dark vision does not show, and it's much easier to know what you are looking at when you have more color.
Posey sees not obvious signs of critical damage, though there are holes that may be from bullets. There are also liquids on the floor.
>>195190Cavaliere finds wooden crates, wooden planks, a shovel, and a crowbar
>>195192>>195190Zara Zama crouches and walks through. The other non-combatants follow as well. Starfire in particular seems anxious, but most come in happily. Unlike before, Mala is not in the rearguard to protect them.
>>195194Cavalier jams the crowbar on one side of the entryway and a plank on the second. He shines his flashlight into the previous room and waves the rest through to account for every single one.
>>195194>non-demonic lineageOh, too bad. Posey was trying to sow radical Yeenoghu-ism among the gnoll communities after bringing that Kaftar priest back as a ghoul. Was going for a Lion King Scar gig. Maybe she can still make it work.
Posey examines the liquid on the floor, then the holes.
"Were there shots fired here? The creatures who fired them should still be here, but they have yet to show themselves..." She says, reading her sword
She readies her sword
>>195195Looking into cargo hold 4, he sees no creatures. All have entered
>>195196I mean, if you want to say that the hyenas are direct descendants of some kind of god or angel or demon, the same way that the Japanese Imperial family claims to be the direct descendants of the Sun god, then sure I guess. I am just saying that Occupied "gnolls" walk on four legs instead of two, and can at least theoretically live past the age of 30
There is blood. Oil, too
>>195197Did we retrieve the key from the lock? Presumably the door can be opened or shut on the boiler room side.
>>195197The story that Posey told was based on the d&d myth, where Yeenoghu broke into the material plane and slaughtered countless sapient beings, and the hyenas who fed on the carrion in his wake mutated and became gnolls, spreading the gospel of wasteful violence. Of course, this has no actual bearing on the setting, just a myth that Posey read in some dusty old tome, that she committed to memory only because it fit into her doomsday prophecy.
Something did respond to her prayer at that altar that night though... I think that should be Agire's job to study the details of.
"Blood... And oil." Posey states out loud, for all yo hear
"There was a fight here. Shots were fired, and the boiler may have been damaged in the process. With the door sealed, the combatants must still be in this room alive or dead. Search for the survivors, or their bodies."

It's part of why Posey likes them.
We just came from Cargo hold 4, so Posey moves towards the nook.
"One left the room, the other...."
>>195198They have not
>>195202Hiding in the corner, not easily visible from the main floor, is a dark blue unicorn pony in a white uniform sitting upright. He has visibile blood stains on his chest, but what is more obvious and notable is the significant wound to his head. A pistol is nearby

Posey snatches the pistol away, just in case he's still alive.
"I found one." Pose says out loud
She gently pokes the unicorn with her magic
"Are you still with us, sir? Feel free to get up if you wish?" she says, a bit too nonchalant for comfort, as if just to provoke sporadic reanimation.

Is he handsome?
>>195208The skull has definitely been penetrated
>>195209But is he

Posey pokes at the corpse, getting a good look at him, a subtle pulse of entropy flowing through her hoof into the skull, perhaps causing the remaining skin to wither slightly
"It appears as though this one has passed."
>>195206Amber replies,
"Oh, it's just a restaurant. Nothin' special. They're busy until late at night, but the coworkers are nice."She makes a listen check.

>>195214>>195213No. He's dead. He shot himself in the head. That's why there is a hole in his head. That's why the pistol is near him. That's why he's slumped down next to machinery. He was wounded, perhaps fatally, perhaps not. He got away. He hid in a little corner. Then he shot himself in the head. He's dead. He's very dead.
