"Well, now that you've answered your own question, I'll spell it out for you.
It probably thinks you're a threat. It's probably taking risks to stop you. My best guess is that it was hoping the steel bulkhead and the locked door would stop the fire from spreading. Steel doesn't burn. That's why its puppets retreated. That's why they locked the door behind them. And It probably hoped to lock
that door behind you as well, or at least, it hoped the fire blocked your exit and the three of you cook alive. Perhaps it thought the fire would die when it exhausted all thre air in the cargo hold. There is no opening to the deck and on four sides the cargo hold is contained by steel. It may have thought the steel walls would contain the fire. I would never take that chance. There's plenty of wood and crates in here. While most of the thousands of tons of heating oil that used to be on this ship were offloaded at Everfrost, some barrels were reloaded and have fumes, some barrels are half empty. Maybe as much as a ton, maybe less, of heating oil is in this cargo hold. Some partly filled barrels might explode under the right heat, same with the butane torches. Fire may spread through the deck once it lights. But maybe the Entity thinks differently.
And suppose the ship did burn? All the Entity has to do is turn a few valves in its hiding hole in cargo hold 2 and sink the ship in shallow water. The water would protect it and the ship would be salvaged in less than a week. That destroyer is, what, an hour away? Nova Griffonia will be here in the morning. The only reason the fascists haven't arrived yet is because they are waiting for clear weather,
assuming they aren't already here. There's already a pirate torpedo boat next to the ship. It has other options for escape.
Do you know that it doesn't have some kind of magical means to stop the spread of a fire? I don't, and I'm not going to ignore an open flame next to the only door through which I can retreat on the assumption that this this god-like being doesn't have some kind of magical way to stop a fire, assuming nine and a half millimeters of steel isn't good enough.
Or maybe it doesn't wish to kill you at all, but just to tire you so it can take over your minds and make you its puppets. Or maybe it doesn't want to kill you but only to delay you from reaching the Hippogriff before the GRU force arrives. Then it can sit back while you fight its enemies for it, in a reverse of what you did on the island.
If that kerosene had lit, its puppets would have just fled through the bulkhead door and locked it. They did that anyways. Then they could have locked the door behind you and let the three of you roast. Then it would be free to attack your snake and the few of us - they almost got your snake and the fascist commander here - from behind, take your zebra hostage, and assuming the deck survived, make her relight the boiler for it, and after all of that it would have had most of its puppets survive for when that destroyer arrives. And if it were wrong and the whole ship burned, all it had to do was flood hold 2 and wait for the destroyer to arrive. You lose. It does not.
Or maybe - maybe - it really is just a dumb animal that doesn't know what it's doing and is acting at random. I don't really know. What I
do know is that you charged ahead to attack a single conscript and let your only mode of escape almost burn. You ignore basic awareness of dangers and your surroundings for the tiniest advantages. I would ask you who is the one lacking tactical sense. You're so very lucky it hasn't realized how easily you may be baited into a trap. A single puppet and you'd happily run next to a barrel rigged with explosives, or onto a false floor, or whatever it can come up with. You can be checkmated at the loss of a single pawn, and it knows that now.
I know that now.
So I'd be a bit less concerned with the tactical genius of a delusional hippogriff and a bit more aware of the wooden floors I stand on."
