In the far-off, northern island of Mended Horn, the party there has learned that they face an enemy they have dubbed "The Traveller." They have decided to go to an old, abandoned village there in hopes of rescuing some communist sailors.
In Baltimare, Dark Star tries to get things in order, while Virgin Flame looks for her old friend.

Brie is beginning to wonder if anyone is going to take the other potion, or if he should forget about it for now, since his flight gives him the best odds of getting it to whomever in a pinch.

Anyway, thanks for the nice and colorful description, I like it.

In EAW, bat ponies are a race of pony indigenous to the Equestrian Southeast, which have spread across especially the eastern portion of Equestria, New Mareland, and then a set have moved across the ocean to northern Zebrica. They have historically been separate from the Equestrian pony tribes, which are migrants to the area from further north. They have their own seperate culture, they are generally nocturnal, and they have their own indigenous religion, although of course in the past, many have followed Nightmare Moon, and many now follow Luna.
Evidently they are not well integrated into Equestria. They have migrated en mass into Baltimare and the other big cities as they are often favored as laborers, especially in the night shift.
Bat Ponies tend to favor the Blackhooves faction as New Mareland has a conception of national identity that is more inclusive of bat ponies than the Hearthswarming myth of Equestria, which centers around the three races. New Mareland, likewise, has never had to deal with Bat pony seperatism, and thus does not have a negative perception of bat ponies. The leftist groups of Baltimare do not like the bat ponies so much, as bat ponies are migrants, mostly from further south, who compete with union laborers, and worst of all will work as "scabs" during strikes.
Don't take the remarks about "dreaded bat ponies" too seriously. In a now-retconned version of the lore, bat ponies were the victims of racism by the other pony races. Why are the other ponies racist against bat ponies? Because reasons. So Princess Luna had to be the upper class white girl savior of the bat pony race, because in one thousand years not a single bat pony had the talent or the will to free themselves... The developers themselves realized that this didn't quite make sense and had some unfortunate implications, so it was changed to the bat ponies segregating themselves, which makes much more sense.

The little portions of the mane that stick out from under the hood are disturbed and disheveled. The little disruptions in the snow, as well as the way the bundled tail has been disturbed, suggest that she was moved to that location from somewhere else. A narrow but sharp shadow cast by the upper body suggests a source of artificial light that is above the body, but slightly lower and off center. The photograph is in black and white and so colors can only be guessed at, but cavaliere can guess that the fur coat is likely brown, the filly's mane is a light, bright color, and the coat is a darker, medium color. Cavaliere may be skeptical of the doctor's claim that the filly was killed by violence, as there is no blood, no sign of tears or trauma, though the possibility that it exists under the thick fur coat cannot be ruled out. It would be easy to say that the frost that covers especially the edges of the jacket suggests a lack of body heat, but it's thick enough that even this is inconclusive. For all that can be known, the filly may simply be sedated. The upper left of the photo is marked "ΓД37"
Cavaliere doesn't know much about the avian-esque tracks. They certainly aren't that of a griffin, nor any kind of bird that he knows that could live that far north. It is somewhat suggestive of a flightless bird, or at the least, something very large, at least as big as a pony.
The scratches on the tree are too ambiguous to say much for sure. The first guess would be an icepick, or perhaps the horn of some creature pressed against a tree trunk, slipping and ripping the bark off of it in a horizontal pattern.
Cavaliere has heard stories of giant ponies, either as something that existed once in the past, or as something still seen by hunters and trappers in the Nova Griffonian wilderness. These stories must always be met with a grain of salt. But this... this isn't quite that. If anything, it's more like an attempt to reproduce a giant.

Indeed, the pattern everywhere surrounding the bay is to slop upward further away from the watter, cresting in green-brown hills that are sharpest on the bay's furthest edges. The appearance is not symmetrical, as to the right, the west, and the way the party came from, the hills do not abruptly stop but continue with one or more small islands that are edged by grey, rocky cliffs, a tendency not parallelled on the left, northern, unexplored side that ends comparatively abruptly past a hill. The dip in the bay is close to the party, and at the dip, the bay is ringed by a sandy beach.
The dull winter grass dominates almost all of the view that isn't exposed cliff face or rock, but the signs of equine habitation are in no small number. Indeed, there are more structures in this view than from all that has been seen before. Close to the party, on the hill slope, is an unnatural hole in the ground. Beyond this are many of the small stone huts seen before, and by the edge of the bay in the middle, a line, and more than a line, of many rectangular stone buildings, most of which still have their slate rooves. Several are taller or bigger, and more exist outside of the narrow band, but a dozen or more form the line. Near this, to the left on the water, is a pier of wood and stone, and with it a couple small rafts. And far, far beyond this on the left side of the bay, on a small low island near the shore, is a large stone structure like a keep.
But that's not what you looked for, is it? No. In that harbor (as opposed to the harbor on the opposite side), is gray freight ship, perched at an odd angle near the left shore. Likely four hundred feet in length and sitting high in the water, painted grey. It has a super structure in the center, two masts before the super structure, and a smaller structure at the rear with another mast, and generally bristles with spreaders and spars. One light is on.
Though the fog has lifted for the moment, the horizon turns to grey beyond the bay, and the left hill hides most of the sun.
Would anypony have cared to look into the other, northerly bay? If they had, they would have seen a bay that is similar to the south. It is not an exact parallel, for such symmetry is rare in nature. This bay is angled to the west, it's narrower, smaller overall, and has a more parabola shape than the half circle in the south. The right/east side of the bay ends in an almost round hill, while the left side tapers off after a large hill, with a visible stone light house at the northwestern extremity. There are not many signs of habitation on this side, besides a small stone circle with something in it near the right, some stone huts, and a few scattered remnants of walls. There is no chain of islands on the left, although far off in the distance and through the fog, the outline of a larger, more distant island may just barely be made out.
The fog has not cleared out in the north to the same degree as it has in the south, and so the bay is more obscured. But they can see it. In the fog, near the center of the bay, with the narrow, front side of its profile visible is a ship. Exactly what it is, is hard to say, but it is narrower, reasonably tall, and over all smaller than the freighter. It is not alone, for it is pregnant with many boats to the side, with a few already moving away from it. With the fog obscuring most details, it appears like an egg sack with so many little spiders crawling out.

The newly christened Hazel squeaks
>>186022Kira gives Hazel a gentle pet.
Doesn't the party have a pair of binoculars or something of that effect, given to them for the mission?
>>186024No, but Garv or Brie or whomever has a telescope
>>186014Why wouldn't we?
>>186025Perhaps they can use their telescope to take a closer look at the ship. Or they can lend it to another character like Silver to take a look.
>>186022Quickly, the griffon takes his telescope to examine the smaller arrived ship.
>>186025Cavaliere has a telescope.
>>186026Anything in particular they are looking for?
>>186027A few details emerge:
A turret with two guns in the fore, a superstructure behind, a single mask, and smaller boats filled with ponies
>>186028Basically exactly what you just described: signs that this is a military ship, landing reinforcements for the commies onto the island.
>>186028Cavaliere folds his telescope, frowning. He goes back to the others.
"Bad weather is the least of our concerns. A landing ship has arrived to the northwest near the lighthouse. Looks like several dozen soldiers are about to arrive, at least." >>186030>>186023Silver nods at Cavaliere, before returning his attention to the purple pony. "Кажется, ваш сигнал бедствия все-таки был услышан. Можете ли вы передать им по радио, что вражеские солдаты на острове одержимы, а не предатели? Если они этого не знают, они их убьют. Если вместо этого мы убьем Путешественника и оставим одержимых солдат в живых, они освободятся от его влияния." -
"It seems your distress call was heard after all. Can you radio them that the enemy soldiers on the island are possessed and not traitors? If they don't know that, they'll kill them. If we kill the Traveler instead and leave the possessed soldiers alive, they'll be free of his influence." >>186031He looks up towards Silver, and his face lights up, smiling.
"Они здесь? Да-да, позвольте мне их назвать. Держу пари, комиссар уже говорил с ними. Но на всякий случай..." -
"They are here? Yes, yes, let me call them. I bet the Commissar has already spoken to them. But just to be sure..." He picks up the radio that is near him, adjust the channel, and presses the button to speak. He speaks with enthusiasm
"Это ничтожная пресса Костромы. Послушайте, на корабле есть опасное магическое существо, которое может контролировать разум пони. Эти пони, контролируемые разумом, враждебны из-за магического существа..." -
"This is Paltry Press of the Kostroma. Listen, there is a dangerous magical being on the ship that can mind control ponies. These mind-controlled ponies are hostile because of the magical being...." He speaks at greater length, trying to describe the situation
"So... Does anypony have a plan to get on the ship?"
>>186039Silver: "I have been asking if they have any information or what have you that will help us in dealing with Traveler. To put it simply, do not fall asleep. Being close to it is also enough to cause some effect. Tin foil hats help with blocking out mind control. I have also heard that urine-soaked clothing worn on your head can do same thing, but that is pretty gross. This pony, named Paltry Press, was struggling with whether or not to do this because his tin foil hat has been destroyed. Kostroma is also where concentrations of possessed soldiers and summoned monsters are highest."
>>186042Brie thinks for a moment about the wisdom of shooting the tin foil hat from earlier. Spilled milk, he decides. Very not thrilled at the notion that there will be no sleep/reprieve, Brie sighs.
"It sounds like we should just sink the whole freighter then."
"Our mission parameters are the 10 soldiers and the airship, but those orders are precipitated from,... 'less than adequate info'," airquotes "and any sane pony (and a few who aren't, self included) can appreciate that this is an Alicorn-level threat. We should still pursue the airship and the marines, but this Traveler strikes me as something that needs to be eliminated without delay. We have two explosives, we could sink the freighter entirely and still be able to blow up the airship if we plant the explosives right, and that assumes the airship is irreparable."
>>186042"How should we board the ship? I could attempt to levitate there with one of my more limited spells, but I am not sure how we could bring Silver or Dust onboard."
"a freighter will be easy enough to get onboard of, especially if the weather is worstening," he holds out a hoof and looks up. "Once we're on site we're probably not going to be able to do alot of planning and discussion, so I advise we should make a set of objectives now and agree to it. I know we all have our individual motivations, but we're MAYBE the ladt chance that Equestria has against whatever this is."
"Oh, and in that our adversaries may be mind controlled, we should be careful what we say to whom from here on out. We could be 'facing' the adversary at every turn, and it's best that they think as little of us as possible," Brie finished grimly.
>>186046Silver: "Surely they have rope, ladder, or stairs for getting aboard ship if you were to fall overboard. We can also commandeer boats that Kostroma crew used to get ashore."
>>186051"That idea sounds like it involves being shot."
She shrugs
"Sure then."
Sorry, I'm late you guys. Car trouble.
>>185705Vir walked up to the desk and leans in to inspect the creatures wings up close. Then she whispers into the batpony's ear, "Have you accepted Princess Luna as your personal Lady and Savior?"
Brie rummages in his pouches and pulls out a sheet of parchment paper, laying it out on a nearby flat surface.
"A docked vessel will have a number of infiltration points, depending on the size of the inbound group," He pulls out a kanji pen and sketches a rough schematic of the ship, with reference lines for the dock. "A sigular pony and SOMETIMES a small group," he pauses, as through recalling an incident, "Can gain entry from the anchor-chain. Theyre surprisingly easy to climb if you can be quiet," he draws a dotted line nearabouts where standard anchor lines tend to run.
"For Cavaliere, Miss Ring, and myself, an overhead arial entrance gains the maximum surprise, but ultimately the strategy will depend on a closer view of their operational layout. Let us hope that strange mind-control monsters aren't up to milspec and tactics. And speaking of tactics, it may be better if I stay on land and try to maintain cover, rather than flying overhead, at least until dusk. I will lose the vantage of overhead which was never given a bonus anyway Xp and it will avoid any instances of predetection."
Two radios turn on and broadcast the same message. This is the radio in Paltry Presses’ hoof, but also the radio in Silver Sword’s possession. They broadcast the same, simultaneous message in a firm, masculine voice:
“Внимание — всем коротковолновым каналам: этот остров теперь находится под командованием Агентства военной разведки.”
Всему личному составу Костромы приказано немедленно явиться в Северную бухту для допроса.”
“Attention - All Shortwave Channels: This island is now under the command of the Defense Intelligence Agency.
All Kostroma personnel are ordered to immediately report to the North Bay for questioning.“
>>186061Can Brie roll a sense motive check on the recording? Like, did it SOUND normal and legit. Or was it "off"?
>>186064In the most severe cases, mind controlled ponies have been mustering or incoherent, and even in the better cases, like these two surviving sailors, there is trembling in their voices, as if they are suffering from the early stages of exposure. The voice on the radio does not sound like that. It sounds like a normal pony speaking in a commanding tone, or even making a threat.
>>186061Posey groans at the message
"Oh, company in contested territory. Just what we needed... Let us be swift."
>>186061What is the Defense Intelligence Agency of Stalliongrad?
>>186061Silver: "Я не уверен, что он осознает угрозу." -
"I'm not sure he realizes the threat." >>186069Role Intelligence or any applicable knowledge.
>>186070To whom is this directed?
>>186071I will assume it's a Local Knowledge check.
[1d20+5 = (3+5) = 8] >>186071>>186072I have decent Int, so I'll roll too.
[1d20+3 = (12+3) = 15](Technically you could also roll History, Warcraft, Law, Nobility, etc, but let's just do one roll).
In this case, if Garv were to verbally reference that he was trying to recall or grasp something, he could describe it and Rosey could assist his skill check
>>186074This theme obscures text colors too much. Let's assume that Silver translates the messages.
"Defense Intelligence Agency? Something like that would be involved in this. What is it they do?"
>>186075>This theme obscures text colors too muchHad also noticed, no bully, its all wholesome
>>186061"It may be beneficial to wait and see if any of the sailors ready to the broadcast. We may be able to use any movements as cover to approach."
>>186072>>186073This seems like the kind of thing that Cavaliere should know and Posey shouldn’t, but Garv rolled low and Posey didn’t… I don’t know. Anyways.
The Military Intelligence Agency of Stalliongrad is separate from their internal security division and does not run internal security. What they
do operate is special forces units within the military.
>>186080Posey is a spy tasked with infiltration: she should ideally be equipped with this sort of information... but maybe her masters weren't very helpful of thoughtful in equipping her for her mission (she entered the game with almost no equipment, afterall), since she's just another expendable thrall.
>The Military Intelligence Agency of Stalliongrad is separate from their internal security division and does not run internal security. What they do operate is special forces units within the military."Those are special forces of Stalliongrad, likely coming in response to what they suspect is a mutiny involving a powerful magical object potentially falling into the hands of the enemy. You can expect the members to be formidable and well equipped, and they will not be easy to negotiate with if we meet them face to face."
She pauses
"On one hand, if we ignore everything, they might resolve the issue with the Traveller for us... But that will not contribute to my practice. On the other hand, if they are spooked enough, they may call for backup to considered the entire island, backup that may just as well fall under the dominion of the Traveller, not to mention make it difficult for us to escape."
[Read more] >>186081>>186082"If they become aware of our presence then we can expect them to attempt to blockade the island. If we avoid them, there's a greater danger of them either being successful and bringing their Fellow Traveler to the mainland, or being unsuccessful and giving him a company's strength of slaves."
>>186082This phrasing was intended to imply that killing "shock troops" and "commandos" is what Brie has a reputation for, and what he specifically expected this mission to involve
>>186083Yes, but they also dont have "The Traveler" yet. We need to get there and end that shit, imo
>>186085All we need to do is figure out what the Kostroma survivors and the griffons should do, and we should be good to proceed. Depending on how long it takes to clear the Kostroma, the commie glowies might reach the village before we can return. This makes me not want to leave the griffons here, but it also wouldn't be safe for them on the Kostroma.
>>186086>All we need to do is clear the survivorsI have several points of contention, in character and out, but Im VERY okay with making survivors the priority
>>186087Sorry. Follow up, Brie thinks killing the Traveler is the best method to ensure the greatest survivor count. Assassination-style, cut the head off and release the thralls.
Fuck! I typed out five paragraphs and accidentally refreshed the page
>>186071That would be directed towards Paltry.
>>186071Also, I know people have already rolled for this, but I'll have Silver roll as well.
[1d20 = 3]>>186081>>186082>>186083Kira pokes her upper half into the room, a brown field mouse riding on her shoulder. "Did I hear right that there are more ponies coming to the island?"
>>186092"Yes, and bad, tough ones. If we aren't quick they will reach the Kostroma before us."
>>186093Kira gulps, and her ears fold down. "Won't that also make our, uh...other task more difficult as well?"
>>186094Cavaliere nods. "Much more difficult. We cannot allow them to find what we're looking for, which is why we need to be fast."
>>186095In that Garv has seen the ship, the party could maybe venture closer to? That seemed to be the safest/most useful course of action
>>186059Kek.
The bat pony looks up at Vir with her icey blue eyes, pulls her wings together, stands up, and walks to the left side of her desk (her right) opposite of Vir, walks to the door, and pokes her head out to her right. She says
"Hey! Daisy! I said stop sending these religious cooks to me. This is the second time you've done this in less than two months. Yeah, I know, that griffin who was on and on about cults and stuff was invited by Sea Breaze, but still, there was that 'non-affiliated' harmonist you sent in just before Hearthswarming. Don't think I don't remember that. He was weird. This one is some kind of Nightmare Moon worshiper or something." She sighs exasperatedly. "No I'm not a 'Nightmare Moon Worshiper' and I'm not here for chit chat.
No, I don't need to socialize more at the group parties. I skipped the Hearthswarming party because that's not my kind of thing! Look, you try making friends in a new city at 7 AM when everyone else is working."
Anyways, enough of her yapping. Vir is here for wings. When she pokes her head out of the door she turns her back to Vir leaving her wings vulnerable. They are thin, soft, and covered in velvet. They may even be transluscent. I mean, Vir thinks she can see a few blood veins. She can certainly see every bony finger in the wings. Look, I'm not saying that she should rub the bat wings, I'm just saying that if this pony did
not want to have her wings rubbed, or even be surprise cuddled, she did a very poor job at protecting herself.
>>186089Awwww
[Read more] >>186097>I'm just saying that if this pony did not want to have her wings rubbed, or even be surprise cuddled, she did a very poor job at protecting herself.Agreed. She is practically bending over and presenting. Ask any lawyer and they would say that she's given consent.
Judge Judy would rule in my favor. "So you
did leave you wing unguarded as a cute bap?" "Yes, ma'am."
Vir sees that the bap is agitated and remembers how much Pew Seat loved having her wings preened. She tilts her head. It doesn't look all that different. She bends down and take a bite on the wing. Hoping, her touch can ease any suffering. ^^
>>186083"For any other military, I would believe that special forces would be capable enough to not be so easily dominated by such entities... but this day and age you really cannot be sure at all. Militaries have begun to value capital over individual competence."
She looks towards the ship
"That would mean that we have no choice but to solve the problem ourselves before they try to... For free..."
She puts her chin up
"Very well then. My masters always told me that the heat of battle and extreme danger are the keys to expanding one's powers. I wonder how much my own powers will grow after this."
She grits her teeth and gives a bit of a manic grin
>>186099Posey begins striding towards the ship.
Is everypony ready?
>>186100Meant to say that last part in character.
"Is everypony ready?"
>>186097If it isnt into combat, Brie is ready to advance ON the ship, closer, from which to strategize. If necessary to specify, maintaining a 5' equal distance from Kubana and the formost of the following members at another 5', so the lead members would be within a 5' step full attack from anyone who attacked another.
>>186022Can we see any creatures aboard the ship?
>>186099>For freeKira: "Maybe these new ponies will be so grateful for us dealing with the Traveler and saving their ponies that they offer a reward?"
>>186101Silver and Kira are ready.
>>186104"Communists do not have any money. It is worth considering thought." Posey says, as she trots closer to the ship
>>186105Kira has a thought: "Hey...so, I know this is probably a bad idea, but...I feel like I should split off from the group to find those missing ponies. I can track them and keep them from being found by the others, and I can even make sure that all of our mission objectives are completed while you guys fight the Traveler. I'm not a very good warrior...but I am pretty good at tracking."
>>186106"I do not agree with splitting up. If you insist on finding the marines first, the rest of us should join you."
>>186107Kira: "Well, I know how important dealing with the Traveler is, but...what if the commies find them while they're searching the island, or the crashed airship? Wouldn't we fail our primary mission objectives? Even if we do manage to deal with the Traveler, I don't think Clear Water and the ponies who sent us here would be very happy."
>>186108"That is a good point. We might be better off locating the Marines first."
She pauses
"That being said, we still do not know where they are..."
>>186109Kira suddenly smiles, and straightens up proudly with her pony half's chest puffed out. "Well, isn't that why you brought me along? I'm a great tracker, and I could find those missing marines as easy as one-two-three!"
>>186110"Yes, that is correct..."
>>186106I have 3 comments, the first 2 ooc:
1. I agree with Posey, splitting the party is generally a bad idea, for a variety of reasons I'll be happy to elaborate on
2. Why not? I would assume you have somrthing in mind with GM, and having Kira separate from the group would enable the accomplishment of mission objectives in a more timely manner. I can envision a number of scenarios WITHOUT knowing what GM has planned, so if he's okay with it, I am.
3.
"I'm inclined to agree with Miss Ring. It is one thing when you have a group supporting you, but in isolation you could get overwhelmed very quickly. Or worse, yiu could end up coming back to fight us under control of something worse. We've only just met, but if you want my advice, it's to stick together."
>>186082Mala speaks
"But they are the enemy, right? Do we care if this uh, the Traveller is good at fighting them? Wouldn't it be a good thing if they fought each other instead of us?"
>>186099"Why should we do anything at all for free?I thought we here because we told someone we'd retrieve a few ponies in particular from a blimp? Power doesn't mean much if you're both dead and broke.
