Do you see that little thing down there in the bottom right in the map? It's to show you roughly how far it is from point A to point B on there by giving some rough distance estimates.
Do you see how it has sets of lines and numbers, all differing in respective meaning in relation to the map? That's because the map has inaccuracies just like any other projection that has ever been put into use. The projection most commonly used as the flat version of Earth by people in your sphere happens to have the inaccuracy or "warp" as it is more formally referred of splaying out as it goes further south in order to maintain the polar-centric circular projection. Thus, the corrections need to be made for proper calculations of distance. Now, if this was the real state of the Earth, then why would those corrections need to be made at all? Why wouldn't there just be one line with one set of numbers for the entire map? >muh different units of measurement! No, that doesn't work. There are 14 separate lines, each with their own different meanings. There are only 2 units big enough and widely used enough to matter on a worldwide scale, the mile and the kilometer (imperial and metric.) Even assuming each of those lines is some different way of measuring distances within those two systems, that only adds up to 11 separate units (4 imperial, 7 metric,) requiring us to somehow pull 3 more units of length out of our asses to accommodate the other three lines shown. Anyone who knows these things better than me can feel free to correct any mistakes I've made, and anyone who thinks I'm wrong on any of these points is free to challenge me. I welcome the idea of learning new things, so I may be convinced if a more convincing argument than facebook-tier images are given.
