Jesus said to keep and teach all the commandments in the law of Moses. Proof in picrel. He didn't describe it as the entrance into the kingdom (which is by faith alone), but that in the kingdom of heaven, it will be rewarded or result in loss of rewards depending on how we observe the commandments or choose to break them.
Notice at the end of picrel, He says that unless our righteousness surpasses the scripture nerds and the perfectionists, we will not enter the kingdom of heaven.
But the Bible says all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. And that the wages of sin is death. So how could anyone make it into the kingdom?
It is only possible by the righteousness that comes through faith, the kind of faith Abraham had. The Bible says "Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness." In a similar way, when we believe Jesus at His word, His righteousness is credited to us and we will pass judgement day, entering eternal life in His kingdom.
And separately, Jesus warns us that inside the kingdom, we will be called great if we keep and teach all the commandments in the law of Moses, but if we annul even the least commandment and teach others to do the same, we will be called least in the kingdom of heaven. So He says it greatly affects our rewards once we make it in.
It is only possible to enter the kingdom of heaven by the exact way Jesus said, to repent from sin and believe in Him, so we can have eternal life. All other ways lead to destruction.
Some of the commandments in the law of Moses include the food laws from Leviticus 11:
- only eat clean animals
- land animals: whatever both chews cut and has a divided hoof. for example cows, deer, sheep, goats. But not camels or pigs because they only have one of those two things. And not random animals like dogs or hamsters
- birds: there's a list of birds to avoid, the rest are fair game. The ones to avoid seem to generally be the scavengers and owls kind, and bats iirc.
- sea creatures: only eat fish that have both fins and scales. no other sea creature is allowed
- insects: all creepy crawlies are banned, except for crickets/grasshoppers/locusts/katydids. The ones with the cool jointed jumping legs. Actually delicious
Bonus food laws in Leviticus 3:16-17 (and Leviticus 7:22-27):
- do not eat blood
- do not eat fat (of animals). This one I didn't even notice for years. Doesn't this mean bullion cubes and ground beef shouldn't be eaten? Because both have heavy amounts of beef fat in them. And we shouldn't cook with animal lard/tallow either.
Also there are clothing laws:
- don't crossdress (i.e. men wearing women's garments or women wearing men's garments)
- wear tassels on the 4 corners of your garment, meaning encircling. (Numbers 15:37-41) Some people today make 4 of them and put them on their belt loops around their pants. Some people sew them into their shirt hems
- Don't wear a garment made of mixed fabrics, such as wool and linen mixed together (Deuteronomy 22:11, Leviticus 19:19). (My understanding from studying the word definitions is that this means the thread itself being mixed, like how some clothes today are partially cotton partially polyester blends for the thread. What do you think? I would appreciate other opinions on the original meaning. https://biblehub.com/hebrew/8162.htm)
Bonus commandment from Exodus 23:13:
- "Now concerning everything which I have said to you, be on your guard; and do not mention the name of other gods, nor let them be heard from your mouth."
- doesn't this imply we should not say the names of several of the days of the week and the months of the year which are named after false gods? Some denominations actually changed their calendars for this reason, naming things like "first day, second day" and numbers for the months. Actually the months of September through December are already number names like this.
And of course there is the Sabbath, which is the 4th of the ten commandments, supposed to be kept a day earlier than mainstream Christianity observes, and it's supposed to be an actual day of rest, that we stop working. So things like yardwork or reorganizing rooms should wait until another day. It's supposed to be a gift to us, a day of rest, a delight.
Look what Isaiah 58:13 says:
13 If because of the sabbath, you turn your foot from doing your own pleasure on My holy day, and call the sabbath a delight, the holy day of the LORD honorable, and honor it, desisting from your own ways, from seeking your own pleasure and speaking your own word,
14 Then you will take delight in the LORD, and I will make you ride on the heights of the earth; and I will feed you with the heritage of Jacob your father, for the mouth of the LORD has spoken.”
There's a lot of other commands to. Jesus said they all are important, that they are all in effect until heaven and earth pass away, and that some big rewards in the kingdom of heaven depend on how we treat the entire law of Moses, even the least commandment in it.
