The flags on 4chan are represented by a single sprite while here vectors are used instead. Why? Vectors may scale nicely but are rendered locally and not always supported. While that's not a big loss, it still raises the question as to why they are used when a sprite would be more optimal. Raster flags also subjectively look better.

4chan owns the patent for "National flags distributed as a single image atlas". To use that technology would require paying a licensing fee so other boards need to use unpatented alternatives.
