> The Wicked Witch of the Web is dead
>4chan, an infamous hub for trolls, hackers, and neo nazis, is to be shut down sometime in 2019. Hiroyuki Nishimura, the owner of 4chan was interviewed this afternoon by CNN, and he shed light on a couple of things related to the site closing. According to him the site had become a problem to deal with and maintain, saying that “The site has become a weight that we just don’t feel like carrying anymore”. He went on to explain that the sites “toxicity” had become too much for him to deal with, the constant scandals and controversies were pointing a huge spotlight at the site, he said “It’s like being a thief caught in the spotlight, everything is exposed now”. The backlash and outcry for the shutdown has become too loud to ignore. Many people from both left and right want this haven for hate speech to finally be closed, once and for all.
>Hiroyuki stated that he doesn’t have an exact date the site is to be closed but the site will be completely gone before Spring. They have already started the process, as some boards are to be phased out and closed by February 7th. Hiroyuki stated that “Some of the more troublesome boards are to be hurriedly closed by the 7th”. Although he did not name names we can only assume that he means boards such as /b/ and /pol/, the two most controversial boards, known for their homophobic, alt-right, racist, and illegal culture.
