"English is 'eating away' at literature lessons": public figure supports idea of reducing foreign language lessons
Pavel Pozhigailo, a member of the Public Chamber, commented on reports of the Ministry of Education's plans to reduce the number of foreign language lessons in Russian schools. In his opinion, this could be beneficial and would allow more time to be devoted to subjects such as physics and mathematics.
Earlier, Alexei Lubkov, rector of Moscow Pedagogical State University, said that the ministry wants to reduce the number of English lessons in grades 5-7 from three to two hours per week. The total amount of study will now be 408 hours instead of the previous 510, which is expected to allow for a more rational distribution of teaching time.
