The biggest attraction to the show for me, aside from the lotus-eater-machine level of cuteness, and the surprisingly well written characters, is how the show has a morality to it contrary to what we normally see in modern television (children's or otherwise). It emphasizes culture, tradition, and interpersonal relationships. Here's a federalist article that lists some of the valuable message the show contains.

To call Equestria a Nation Socialist utopia would be an exaggeration, but not by much. Whereas most modern shows base their morality around leftist french-existentialism (asserting individual identity against tradition and group values), neomarxism (opposing racism and class-based oppression), or a diluted for of American liberalism ("freedom!" but not well done), My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic has values that most closely ressemble Alasdair MyIntyre's Communitarian philosophy.

For example, in the Season 1 episode "Winter Wrap Up" the whole town comes together to clean up the winter weather and bring in Spring without the use of magic. When Twilight - who is clearly the central character in the first season - points out that weather changes are most easily brought about by magic, she is told that the Town does not use magic because of a tradition dating back to the founding of the town by Earth Ponies, who cannot use magic. Out of respect for tradition, she accepts, and spends the episode trying to determine what role she can play in the community when her greatest talent is barred from use - she ultimately finds her organizational skills best used in management.

If that episode were a Disney movie, Twilight would have spent the entire episode rebelling against the tradition because what works for the whole town doesn't work for her - a morality taken from french existentialism. But instead the show emphasizes both the importance of tradition in making an individual feel like part of a larger whole, and of taking roles within the community that give identity and meaning to the individual, that also serve the community as a whole.

The show also amazingly shows a society where individuals are clearly not equal to one another - even without magic twilight is a superior leader - but every individual is satisfied with the role they play and no one has contempt for anyone else.

I wanna watch this show to get in with the community we have here, but I share netflix and hulu with my parents…

I think you misunderstand. I like the show. I've started watching it the past week and I'm mostly through season 2 at the moment. I was just saying that it's a show that I approve of that I hope to show my daughter some day. Most of the stuff on TV these days is just garbage that I don't want poisoning a young impressionable mind.

Pinkie can be obnoxious, but I'm two seasons in and my opinion of her is that she's not always so heavy handedly annoying as in the first few episodes. Maybe I'm just getting acclimated to her though.

In the first few episodes they were trying hard to define her character, and from then on she's mostly just annoying in episodes that center around her, but she's more bearable in the majority of episodes where she plays a more minor role.
