I hate usernames so much. They are my least favorite part of any site that allows them.

Same. Anytime I have to use a normie board I cringe at the idea everyone can see all my old posts. It's like, I want this one post to stand on its own without the reputation of all the other posts I've made.

I like to use the most common username on a site and slap a two-digit number afterwards. If there are none left then three digits will do, and you know it's a good username.

Usernames don't bother me as a concept, what bothers me is the way modern sites won't let you just use bullshit info to create a username anymore. Nearly everything requires a verified email for signup, and you can't just create endless bullshit throwaway emails the way you used to be able to. Some sites want your phone number and multi-factor authentication and all sorts of other bullshit as well. The days when you could have 40 separate accounts per site with names like NiggerFaggot6969 and profiles full of obviously fake info are long gone. Everything is tied to your real identity now, it sucks.

There are plenty of sites that give you an email account that's only valid for ten minutes. You can use these to make a lot of accounts online. You don't have access to those accounts afterwards, so it's not a "full" substitute, but it's better than nothing.

Also, some accounts let you make shell accounts for signup reasons. I use them for newsletter stuff so I can easily unsubscribe even if they give my email to spammers afterwards.

actually after posting that I did find a browser addon called SimpleLogin that allows you to create a shell email that forwards to your real email, so that + a protonmail account has been pretty useful.
