Is the new CAPTCHA a permanent thing, or is this the new normal?
We've had CAPTCHAs before, usually for a brief period when we were dealing with raids. I thought this one would be lifted sooner or later, but it's been almost a week with it now.
It's pretty uncomfy. It even gets in the way of me trying to report spam posts to the mods. It seems to be tied to IP hash or poster password, but that's still inconvenient for me who uses multiple devices and browsers.

What gives? Why was this put in place now after all these years? Is it permanent?

Yes this is my exact argument
>Just because you are content to embrace the rot does not mean that the topic is not worth discussing.
You're stressing yourself out over a non issue, if you were forced to wait 120 seconds or something before posting on an active imageboard like what users go through on 4cuck then yeah i would understand if it kinda pissed you off a bit but if you're seriously whining because of a captcha you can complete in like 5 seconds on this ghost town of a site then you should really take a rest from the internet

That is a good question. It would been nice if this was communicated on before it was implemented.

Reasons to enable the captcha:
- Pornography of the child variety is being spammed everywhere
- Shartards are spamming a lot right now
- Actual robot marketing scamboats are spamming right now

Reasons to disable the captcha:
- Paranoid "ironic schizo" newfags think the captcha will give Google a backdoor in to their clop folder
- ESLs can't into deciphering
- Captcha makes posting from a normie iPhone less easy

Wow, what a shock that the Admin enabled it!

Okay, but we operated just fine for 8 years without it. Is the spam problem really so bad that we have to change things? We didn't even do this when /jp/ and 4/qa/ was raiding us every single hour of every single day for weeks on end.

The captcha is something we're implementing on a trial basis to see if it cuts down on CP and other spam. Right now you have to fill out one every 24 hours, not terrible but I can see how it might annoy some users. If people really hate it and really complain we can shut it off.

So far it seems to be working as intended, although we did have one CP post get through not long ago, suggesting that at least one spammer is a human making posts the old-fashioned way. As I said, it's being done on a trial basis; if it turns out to be too much of a pain for anons or it isn't as effective in preventing spam as we'd hoped, we'll disable it.

>Is the spam problem really so bad that we have to change things?
Yes. By any means, preventing or even just slowing the occasional inflow of underage 3DPD pictures is vital. A captcha is a miniscule hurdle that can actually save the entire site.

Wizchan was hosted on Dreamhost. It got the same CP spam that any other Tinyboard-like board was getting but all it took was the mods being offline for 2 hours for an illegal image to get the site immediately ripped offline and its databases shredded. Correspondence with Dreamhost revealed that the image was detected on Wizchan's fileserver during a routine scan of files sent to Dreamhost's network. The scan picked up the hash of the image, compared it to a massive database of known CP images, returned a match, and just nuked the entire website. No backups, no warnings, no requests to explain - just immediate execution. The Dreamhost account was put in to a restricted state where all that could be done was an outgoing domain transfer and a chat with some actual American tech support man who was not sympathetic and made it clear that he personally believed the site was distributing CP based on that single image found. I know this because I had full access to the host account at the time this went down and as a result I lost the $900 I put in to it to secure the site's future. I and every user was flat out robbed and all it took was one picture of what was probably just some ugly fat brown kid in a swimsuit.

Now consider that A.I is being used to scan images so altering the hash by plastering unique URLs on the the image won't work. Even if Milpool is hosted on its own privately rented dedicated server, concerned citizens (trolls) can report a malicious image and force a scan by a third-party authority. CP is a poison unto any website. The solution isn't to let it get ingested and then hope you can cure it before it kills you. You must vet everything that is trying to enter the body and stop the poison before it gets in, even if it means you need to wait a little longer to eat the food you need in order to survive. I'm not a moralfag and I'm not at all afraid of navigating to the posted links just to report them on their hosts (NEVER click the links directly), but I can confidently say that CP is nothing to take lightly.

If anything, the captcha should be harder. It likely is a human, or an entire synagogue of them, who is behind the spam. Simple letters and numbers are only good for actual bots and even that's iffy now with even basic local AI being able to solve them. The Cutie Mark identity one would work well. There are other solutions too, but they're all much easier said than done and will probably fall apart for anyone using a VPN. I fully support any of Pupper's attempts at mitigated spam and I will cherish the butthurt from those who believe they are entitled to post completely unhindered on a privately owned website.

I do understand that preventing the cheese pizza spambots is an important issue. I have raised the issue several times before, and I am glad that attention is being paid to find solutions.
I just reported a pizza post just now though, so it seems like the bots don't have any problems solving this CAPTCHA.
Btw, the thing that ticked me off enough to make the thread wasn't just having to do it for regular posting, but because it got in the way of me trying to report a cheese pizza post. While I am sympathetic to the attitude to tell mobileposters to get shafted, I tend to report spamposts on mobile quite a bit, and filling out the CAPTCHA to flag illegal content felt like an unnecessary hassle.
Have bots been spamming the report function so much that it needed a CAPTCHA too?

Personally I don't mind captchas because they don't prevent me from at least being able to browse without resorting to having JS on. The report captcha had a bug which was now fixed, which is good. Managing an image board isn't easy. What DOES bother me is this site using (((cloudflare))). Aryanne would never have allowed it.

Thank you for your answer.
I think I'm fine with it if it really helps you guys, but that's with the preface that I haven't really posted that much since this was implemented yet.

However, I do think your are correct that there seem to be someone who post cp on this board manually, or not a bot or whatever. I saw a image earlier today, I think.

Anyway, if you ever need someone to remove that during the night, well your night, my day, I could perhaps try to. If it would help.
Anyway, goodday!

Many such cases. I used to frequent another small, obscure imageboard. They got flooded with so much CP in 2019-22 that it would have blown them offline over and over regardless of the content of the images. Somebody had a real hard-on for them and spent THREE. FUCKING. YEARS. flooding the shit out of every thread on every board with CP images. The mods would all go to sleep at the same time and in twenty minutes the site got knocked offline again, until they finally pulled the plug in 2022. The board owner, a European, went to the local police, with logs showing originating IP addresses, and was told "Hackers, eh? Can't do nowt for ya, mate." He tried Interpol. He tried the FBI and the Australian Federal Police. Everybody blew him off, if they even answered his emails. He thinks it was glowniggers, but I don't know what he and his tiny little niche imageboard with fewer than two hundred regular posters did to bring the Eye of Sauron upon them.

Lots of small imageboards are getting the same treatment. Nobody deserves that. I'm sorry to hear your story, even if Wizardchan was a tard farm full of unmedicated schizos.

A lot of people are unwilling to believe that unpaid but obsessed scum could be behind the CP spam. I don't doubt that glowniggers would do it in extremis, but look at 4chan right now. Direct and embedded CP spam has been done by randoms through the proxy site for months simply to spite the mods, and allegedly leto personally spammed CP on kiwi farms for the same reason. I haven't seen any personally, but it's entirely possible that the CP spam here is done by someone who hates MLP or the right wing bent of this site and/or has a vested interest in this place going down to funnel traffic to other MLP themed imageboards. It's not as unlikely as it sounds, the donkey show and its splinters regularly accuse each other of spamming CP on their sites and back in the day, the alt chan federation posted CP and tried to incite drama on smug webring sites to herd 8chan users to them.

In any case, I don't believe screencaps like that. They never have specific details on the site targeted or attempted mitigation, and all they really accomplish is getting people to go to 4chan or social media platforms that surveil and censor them but at least "protect" them from CP.

The kind of disconnect we've come to expect from a Kiwifarms dramafag.

The CP spam here isn't targeting anything besides the accessibility of the imageboard format. It's why close to a dozen other boards with the same interface get the same spam at the same time. The spam links to the same URL-shortened PasteDOTit or Telegraph pages around the same time, featuring the same links to the same pay-to-download site that gives the uploader a cut per each download. It's entirely commercial and done from within the safety of some third world shithole that doesn't have the care to pursue charges against CP dealers. Telegraph doesn't have (or isn't using) a hash fileban so while the preview image pages get deleted (often after weeks), the same images come back time and time again. I guess banning child erotica violates freedumb of speech or something. The video previews hosted on lain.la get hard deleted after a while, but of course the same videos can just go right back up. The kshared and other download services are hosted in Buttfuckistan where gay little boy CP is legal so the links are the same every time. Case in point: CP is being spammed because it's incredibly easy to do so in this gay era of "Everyone from anywhere deserves the right to upload and post anything anytime"

At this point it's so easy to spread and download CP that you could assume the whole operation is an entrapment honeypot, but that relies on the outdated notions that any government still gives a shit about defeating pedophiles.

I don't lurk kiwifarms often and I've never had an account there. I'm speaking from experience with other imageboards. Most spam of CP pics and videos is done by butthurt autists and troons to harm the site and drive away users.
>commercial
Yes, I've seen the link spam on the webring and a few other places. That's not what I was talking about, but the solution to that is adding a spam filter for the URLs and rolling your own captcha, not just the latest take on grainy pics of letters with lines through them. Something like using machine learning to crop a bunch of fanart or official pics of MLP to pone faces and telling users to input the correct name.

This is true, and it was certainly the case in the early history of this site, but the stuff you see getting spammed here seems more like a slow, regular procedurally generated spam than anything targeted by spiteful actors.

I think it would be the opposite. A human would do it all at once in a wave with intent to be disruptive as possible.
A bot comes in cycles, occasionally updating its shitty numbers and refreshing its proxies before eventually striking again once, on its long list of slowchans it targets.

>All of the gay 3D shota spam is by a Polish roach with no real opsec using a free proxy service to get Russian IPs
>He will never be arrested because he's from a country that doesn't discriminate against the LGBTQ by arresting gay child molesters

Time is a flat circle made of a snake that is eating itself. This is identical to 2012 'Tor boom' spam

Story time:
Behold Gondola. He was born out of CP spam. In the early 2010s the Tinyboard project was taking off so everyone and their neko had their own imageboard. Some Russians thought to capitalize on the accessibility by spamming these poorly moderated boards with payed Megaupload CP links. The image they used was one of Pedobear because back then memes actually meant something and a Pedobear meant good times with small gals. These Russians used Tor to spam multiple threads on the same board constantly, as they could switch the IP of the entire browser while keeping the contents of imageboard post fields full. Post > back button > new IP button > post. The spam could fill 1/5th of the catalog but nobody really gave a shit because it was just Pedobear on an already spammy joke imageboard. The language used to describe the links was always broken and poorly obscured to the point that the Finns found it hilarious and begun making fake CP spam threads with busted spelling and poorly drawn Oekaki Pedobears. Then the pedobears took on personalities of their own and became their own independent characters: Spurdo Sparde and Gondola.

So if you've ever fapped to Gondola, you've fapped to Pedobear.
