Lesson Zero is, in many ways, the perfect episode to show someone getting into this show. Action, panic, rising tension, stakes that feel real, panicking ponies, Twilight's slipping mind, Rainbow crashing into the ground to make a rainbow nuke to destroy Applejack's barn, and an ending that fixes the "All episodes with morals have to have Twilight shoehorned in somewhere" problem the show had in its early season.

This and
"Ponyville Confidential"
"It's About Time"
Eventually, fandom and show reached it's peak between s2 and half of s3, I still remember sick amount of "Babs seed" remixes. Including the best one:

I miss the days when the show had good writers that fixed obvious problems instead of shoving them in our faces and calling them fixed then telling us to get over it.

I can't believe I actually remember a time when some guy said "I love this fandom, but I'm scared. What'll we do when the show gets shit?", and I said to him, "Don't worry, we're about more than the show now. We're bronies, and that's never going to change. Even if they start making new seasons that suck, we'll keep watching them just to laugh at them together, like the DBZ fans laughing at GT."

Oh, how optimistic I was. The modern episodes are bad, and not in a way that makes for fun discussion topics. They're objectively, insultingly bad, and only hasdrones that "Turn their brain off" and open wide for the shit to be poured down their throats can stomach it. Worse, they see our refusal to do so as picky whiny pseudointellectual Rick and Morty-tier "We have eloquent tastes and high IQs unlike you!" douchery.

I miss what the fandom felt like back then, I miss how hopeful and optimistic it all felt. Then again, maybe the fact that we all miss those good old days is proof that they mattered and there's a chance we could go back to them, right?

The fact that we have fond memories and miss those times show that they do matter; If they didn't, we wouldn't miss them, and we all would of just moved on. But here we are, on this Cambodian moving picture appreciation board, talking about how much we love little talking multi-colored horses. Hell, the fact that we still go every Saturday and watch it to see if this is going to be a good episode, and then talk about ways to fix the show if it's bad, shows how much we still care for it. The ride never ends, and even if the show does, you know damn well that we're going to make sure it doesn't stop.

Using the metrics of writing, and loyalty to the core premise of the show, the latest seasons are objectively inferior. Not all of the latest episodes are bad, but enough of them are bad enough to warrant the average being called shit.

In general, I'll grant that. There are still enjoyable episodes however, and liking them and observing the (diminished) appreciable elements doesn't mean a person has turned their brain off and eats/drinks shit.

There you go again with that dogmatic "Anyone who dislikes things I like must have his character and right to dislike things attacked while I plead for 'fairness' and 'compromise'" shit again…

Sure, there might be some very rare decent episodes, but the overall trend is downhill. And I say decent, not good, because none of them measure up to the best classic MLP episodes.

For example, that episode where they retconned all of the three identical pony tribes into being a mixed mongrel race all along because they were once their own distinct horse breeds? Well, at least the designs for the old races usually looked cool.

And that episode where we finally found out about Applejack's parents. It felt like a rejected season 1/2/3 episode someone hid in his pockets to spring on the new writing team the second people couldn't think of another bad Glimmer/Maud/Discord/Spike episode stock plot but needed something to fill time.

And that Daring Do one. It had a pretty sexy giant monster sphinx thing.

But yes, if we ignore all the actual shit episodes to "Be fair" to the rare decent ones and we all pretend episodes like Flutter Brutter never happened, I guess the two seasons with like 3 decent episodes between them don't seem all that bad any more.
