>Beautiful Jim Key was a famous performing horse around the turn of the twentieth century.[1] His promoters claimed that the horse could read and write, make change with money, do arithmetic for "numbers below thirty," and cite Bible passages "where the horse is mentioned."[2]
>Beautiful Jim's trainer, "Dr." William Key, was a former slave, a self-trained veterinarian, and a patent medicine salesman.[3] Key emphasized that he used only patience and kindness in teaching the horse, and never a whip.[4]

So, potentially crazy thought: if you started a horse breeding and raising program similar to how Bill Key bred and raised Jim, could you eventually create an entirely new breed of horse with an intelligence similar to ours?

Aye.

The video says the Harvard scientists concluded Jim was equal to (or greater I assume) to a 6 year old. I've been wondering if you could make a horse civilization? Problems are: 1) can't speak, 2) no hands. But coupled with humans they could be a part of the economy, acquire wealth, purchase human labor and we could purchase theirs. It would be a fascinating experiment.

What would happen if two horses could write to each other and we could read it?
We have had an assumption for a long time that animals aren't self aware.

What a hellish existence. But, that existence is still better than being a mindless animal. Or at least, that is what I would argue.

Thought it was spelled ay. Thanks for the correction.

>What a hellish existence.
On the contrary, having to worry only about the most basic existence sounds like a blessing in disguise. Also, the most personal and bonding moments are nonverbal.

Having brain capacity and no opportunity to use it leads to massive boredom, lack of self-worth and depression.

Do horses in a corral seem depressed to you?

Perhaps most don't have the superior brain capacity? How would you know if they are depressed?

was this the horse that was reading the crowd as opposed to doing actual math? IE stopping stomping when the crowd anticipated that he should stop?

>He also got 2 million kids to gather to pledge never be mean to animals. Also, every animal he met he befriended them and tamed them.

Cool story though. He's a good horse.
