Celestia and Luna might not be all that helpful, but they certainly couldn't have defeated Chrysalis without Cadence and Shining Armor, or Cozy without the students, or Storm King without the other 6 guys that by no means are better than the royal army that for some reason wasn't there in the incredibly important celebration.
It seems like EQG isn't canon, because the proto-rainbow power that no one knew about and popped out of nowhere when Sunset blasted them was the exact same thing that popped up this time.

Also, if you read it again, EQG brought this issue first, Sunset did wrote the mane six into a corner, breaking the formula by stealing an element and using its power thus, the deux-ex machina had to be implemented.

This feature, mechanic, or however you want to call it, has been implememted when villains succeed using that weakness, Sunset by stealing one and using it against them, or Sombra, by doing whatever the fuck he did.
