4chan went downhill with the advent of the iPhones and other smart phones becoming common place. Mobile posting dramatically picked up the pace of conversation while plummeting content and severely hampering discourse.
With smart phones in the hands of children a whole new subgroup of people were able to access the site. That being the underage and b& normalfags that never would have had the balls to visit on the family PC, purely coming to the site for memes. And to reply to them with inane one liners that add nothing to the conversation, just because typing out a well written post on a phone takes time.
I remember a time when shortening "picture related" to "pic related" was a major no no. And that was going on in /b/ of all places. People used to care about formulation a well thought out and coherent post. Because you'd get ignored otherwise.
But that is no more. Just look at [S4S] for example. Something you'll find all the newfags heil as the embodiment of chan culture. A entire board dedicated to people that don't give a shit about presentation, attempting to force memes while using broken English post unironically seeking immediate satisfaction and validation. Literately everything that was ever called cancer and will be cancer to any online group.
I have no idea how [s4s] came into being. I'm often away from the site for months. I'd like to think it was an misguided attempt at an containment board.
What the place needs is another Snacks. A chan addicted content whore with an b& hammer in tow going into any and all threads. Not like the current staff that only show up in threads they personally approve of.

I had enough of the constant flood of obvious underage users coming to the site and shitting the place up, so I decided to go for their staple diet. I'm bringing this up to point out how blatant thread favoritism is within the moderation staff. I would spam ylyl threads with desu for days on end without receiving a ban. I mean being up closing pool for 50 hours straight to the point no new YLYL threads are created any more.
But I couldn't go oldschool without hitting up an old enemy, I'd move onto g/fur/ threads but within 20 minuets of commencing my reign of tyranny BAM. Banned. Now you might just think it's bad luck. But no. YLYL threads would average 150 IP's many of which would be reporting my actions for periods of days. g/fur/ on the other hand would be only 20 or so IP's.
Of course I'd ban evade and go back ylyl threads unimpeded as an obvious ban evader. But ever time I'd got to g/fur/ I'd get banned within hours. I was banned approximately 10 times during my rampage. Only twice for hitting YLYL.
I was doing serious damage to the userbase of the site. There was a facebook group opened for users to escape me. "Never ending YLYL thread". It had gathered 3000 users in just three days.
There was one interesting little occurrence that happened during my rampage. I fucked up one of my ascii posts. To find that it got deleted. One user capped said post to in an attempt at getting on my nerves. Now I'm sure 4chan doesn't bug post deletion, so piqued my interest. I decided to reply to the users cap. "i don't think doing that was a good idea" without and desu content. Only to receive a reply to the effect of my concerns were comical. Now no one could tell the difference if it were myself or someone else deleting the post. I really don't think a random user could have picked up my vibe that the mods had shown themselves to find that comical. And I'm sure as hell they wouldn't have found angering the beast Suiseiseki to be something to laugh at. They were all down trodden and broken by my actions by this time. If I didn't know any better I'd swear I had a moderator cover my ass for me.

you may be onto something there. giving easier unsupervised access to argueably the main board of 4chan must have drastically decreased the qualuty of the site, no doubt. that said, I have to say /b/ was never an excellent board. but the entertaining content thread have become increasingly rare.
theres days people unrionically complain and spam if you post "undesired" content there, including gore, jailbait, thinly veiled suicide instructions or IRL trolling. Thread favouritism is a thing. I can testify that even for /mlp/. If you shitpost in MLPG thread you get banned very fast. this is unwarrented since MLPG is objectively one of the worst threads on the board.

I myself have done a little field research for forced memes in early 2017.
Some time after Valentines day i discovered a facebook meme with a purple dove. I save a couple images and started a campaign on 8chan /b/.
i posted doves only for 2 days in a row 8 hours a day. I did not exactly "raid" the board, but i made sure that there was a dove picture visible it every thread on the front page at all times. Every time one fell of the visibility, i reposted one swiftly.
It took one day before the dove was recognised by board staff. It was put in as an all time screen overlay gif.
2 days in, people started unironically complaining, begged for mercy, threatened me and asked to get the dove and myself permabanned. THe mods held a poll for this, after which was decided i should not be banned. I left after that, since i had gained all intel i needed.
I was both surprised and disappointed at thios reaction. You would think a side with the reputation of 8chan had thicker skin and a non-topic board like /b/ would be have a higher pain tolerance to something as mundane as a purple dove. Apparently, this was not the case.
I guess chan sites and their audience just arent what they used to be. Not even on the "deepweb". People value security and familiarity more than original content, even on topicless boards. Its like The patriots said, people break up in micro communities and only see what they want to see as reality. Nothing is true, but nothing is untrue.
